If he goes to the NHL next year he'd be the first to make the jump straight from the USNTDP program right?

Odds for Hughes playing at whc?

I try not to speak in absolutes but close to 100% if he wants to go. The Hughes family has talked openly about how important the WC was to Quinn last year and I imagine they expect it would be the same for Jack. It's a great way to baseline himself against adult professionals and then have the entire summer to prepare for NHL training camp with that experience in mind. He's also almost certain to not bother with the WJC Summer Showcase, so it's not like he'll overload his summer with hockey. Lastly, it's likely that both Quinn and Jack will get invites to the WC and I can't imagine they'll pass on the opportunity to play together.

I'm seeing a lot of posters who are saying that Hughes is going to be borderline generational talent. Would he be picked before the likes of Matthews & Dahlin? I've also seen a lot of Kane comparisons...do people consider Kane generational or are they expecting Hughes to become even better? Maybe the greatest American hockey player some day? That would be amazing news for the home of the brave.

Now you can think Matthews or Eichel will supplant him but to answer your question on Kane. He at this point is getting harder and harder to question as the greatest hockey player the USA has ever produced. Depending on how heavily you weight that along with his Hart, Smythe, Lindsay, Ross and Calder and three first team all-stars and three cups where he was massive in each run and he is an extremely impressive player. I have a hard time seeing where he doesn't fall in the top 50 in the history of the game and that is basically stopping right now. I am not sure when he will slow but if Kane keeps this up for three or four more seasons in terms of his form he moves solidly into the top 25 more than likely. For those that take generational rigidly he probably falls just outside but for those doing that there are probably only 5 or max 10 doing it that way total and several of the all-time greats that you would kill for anybody you draft to be would be on the outside of that.

I actually do believe one of the big three, with the two that just entered the league and Hughes on his way can supplant Kane, but that depends on when Kane starts to show his age and it looks like his game and the style of game the league is trending towards is going to help him a lot in terms of warding that off. Hughes belongs in the conversation with those other USA greats is more the point, that is who he is tracking to currently and where he looks like he belongs. We will have to see what happens but when your best comparison is a sure fire HHOF that isn't a bad thing and Kane really is his best comparison NHL wise in terms of how he drives play and backs people off with his pace, hands and the way he processes the game.

I’ve seen a lot say that Hughes is having a bad season. He has a higher PPG average than last season and his PPG average this season is the highest in program history. What’s bad about the season he’s having?

I see that same stuff. I don’t get it. I will admit his USHL stats from last year was slightly better(27 games- 54 points. Compared to this year(19 games-36 points I believe, without looking)

With that being said,
While it would be a big jump from USNTDP to the show, Girgensons went from the USHL to the AHL and he only put up a little under a point per game in the USHL.

Also, I really don’t think the USHL and CHL is that big of a difference.

Sorry what?

The word generational should be blocked on this site. I think another Gaudreau / Marner type player is a reasonable expectation, and another Kane would be exceptional, although it's pretty unlikely. Kane's had a remarkable career and that sometimes gets overlooked because of how incredible Crosby and Ovechkin have been for the past decade and more.

Not a bad season, just a worse season than the last one.

I agree with you 100%. I do not like the generational, franchise, elite etc labels.

Huh?

He has one more point than last season with seven games to go.

While I definitely agree with your "Huh?" the EliteProspects stats you're referencing are incorrect.

Last year, Hughes had 116 points in 60 games.

This year he has 79 points in 41 games. If you're just looking at his NTDP stats it's 74 in 36, but you need to factor in his WJC stats too.

He's scoring at the same exact clip (1.93 ppg) as he did last year and he's doing so playing much older competition, while also battling injuries at various times (leading into the WJC, at the WJC, and after the WJC) causing him to miss games. At best, assuming he misses no games, he's likely to play 14-15 more games this year (6 USHL games, 1-2 IIHF U18 exhibition games, and 7 IIHF U18 games if they make it to the medal round). If he keeps scoring at the same clip, he'd end this year with 108 points in 56 games.
