Ah, if he can do it against Skjei and Trouba, then he passes the test and deserves to be an NHL player. The Rangers are lucky to have such legendary barometers on the ice.
(Meanwhile, neither are actually very good at defending.)
They represent what Hughes will typically be facing in the NHL, while Reunanen and Geertsen do not. Obviously if they can pull that off against Norris candidates that's a cherry on top, but also an even bigger if at this point.

Hughes will be a superstar if the typical skill level of the defenders he faces are Skjei/Trouba.

Gotta be honest thou, he has surprised me a lot in the preseason so far, at least goals,points and skating wisely, good for him.
I'm still highly skeptical however, its not like he has lights out dominated in the preseason against mostly none regular NHL:ers

His passing and vision are ridiculous. Set up so many chances, looked way better than the prospect tourney by just simplifying his game.

4 points in 2 preseason games, where he could have had 5 or 6 more points if the guys on the end of his passes had got their shot off a bit better. He's been the best player on the ice in both games he has played, but somehow that still isn't good enough because the goalposts are constantly being shifted by the Finnish contingent here.
Has he had giveaways? Yup.
Has he been terrible at faceoffs? Yup.
Has he been knocked off the puck by stronger players? Yup.
Guess what though? None of that is surprising in any way, everyone knew that it would go that way. The insane amount of skill and skating ability he possesses has been on full display here, and all people can do is nitpick at the obvious flaws everyone knew he would have and that many young players coming into the league have had. Anyone remember how horrendous Crosby was at faceoffs and defensive hockey in his rookie year? Patrik Kane was even worse and was also knocked off the puck plenty. They were both criticized plenty for their weaknesses in these areas, which is deserving for Hughes as well, but I don't recall anyone flooding the internet to trash them for their overall potential or ability because of it, or saying that they would never translate to the NHL.

What a dumb way to try and diminish him. Everyone's playing against the same type of competition, how man have put up 3goals 4 points in 2 games as an 18 year old? How many goals does krappo have? I have been so impressed with Quintin and Jack so far. In his 5 game stint he had 3 points and 39 controlled exits, the next best was 12. People say it's only 5 games, but so what he still did it. Same with Jack, he's been the best 18 year old so far by a mile in the preseason. What has kakko done?

Hughes is really great but come the f*ck on! What has Kakko done? What about being a leader in every championship team, both at mens level and at the WJC.
Biased p*nk kid who can't se greatness in players if they aren´t american?

What we’ve learned from last game is that the Rangers apparently don’t have enough men to field a preseason lineup; so still no goals.
Hall said he was surprised how well Hughes can shoot. Hughes definitely has good velocity on his wrist shot already.
