No current NHLer provides a great comparison for Eichel IMO, which just shows how special of a talent he is.

To me the best comparison is Fedorov. Both have a great frame, long, elegant and powerful strides, elite finishing ability, and high end vision.

This is actually a really terrific comparison, the best I've seen yet. Similar skaters, similar stick handling moves that really make the best of their reach, both with very well rounded games/no real weaknesses, and just that same feeling of an unstoppable force coming down the ice when they have the puck.

For current players, I like a sort of Malkin/Getzlaf hybrid, but historically I like the Fedorov comparison even more.

Eichel was suffocated like all the Americans were by a hard Austrian forecheck. He made a beauty cross-ice saucer to Krug for a partial break that was stopped. He won the opening draw of the 2nd to Krug which led to the go-ahead goal. In fact, he should have gotten an assist on either the faceoff win to Krug or the tip on Krug's pass that was converted. IIHF has been jipping players with assists (did it to Barzal, Bracco and Fischer at the U18 and to Buchnevich at WJC).

Played on top PP unit. Had no real chance to take advantage of open ice because Austrians were treating the exhibition like Game 7 in front of the home crowd (understandably so) with man to man pressure in all three zones.
I only saw the first 2 periods, but the Americans weren't going too hard. They seemed to be treating it like an exhibition (which it was), just kind of coasting and getting used to the bigger ice. Still, Eichel had some really nice plays. Hopefully we'll see some more urgent play as the tournament gets going.

Agreed...I've seen dozens of comps throughout the season and nothing felt right, but the second I saw Fedorov's name I was like YUP! Very good call to whoever posted it, and I think Buffalo fans would be quite happy if he turns into the same offensive force that Fedorov did. I'm a Bruins fan and the Wings became my second favorite squad mostly because of him, such an incredible, powerful skater with great vision, a good shot and a surprisingly well-rounded game for such a dynamic offensive player.

I also really like the Federov comparison. The video shows it quite well.

He's looked pretty good in the WHC, much better in his second game, was by far USA's best forward. He dominated the 2nd period vs Norway.

He compares very favorably to the best NHL forwards on the squad (Bonino, Nelson, Lee, Lewis, Arcobello). He's very obviously the best among them by a fair margin.

Hasn't been very visible so far vs Russia

He's been pretty good. Winning faceoffs. Got an assist. Got a nice opportunity. I'd like to see him bear down a little bit. He's almost too casual. He's just scratching the surface.

But it's just the WHC. Who cares, right? It's not the Memorial Cup or anything.

I was very impressed with his ability on face-offs, I don't know what he finished but at one point he won 6 of 7... seemed to have a well rounded game overall

He was bad at it the first half of the season and through WJC. What do you know...an elite player worked on something and became good at it quickly.

I've noticed a level of casualness to his game most times I've watched him, but I think its even more pronounced for a guy like him with his skating ability.

IMO he still hasn't "put it all together". Which is scary considering the success he's had. Reminds me of Lemieux early on in his career. Some guys don't get that mental maturity until their early 20's, compared to guys like Crosby and McDavid who are very mature in their approach and game management.

Eh, from what I've heard Eichel would show up to the rink an hour before anyone else and shoot a few hundred pucks almost every day.

Dude is a physical specimen. He loves to train and work hard. Making these lifts look easy at 16.

Is that so? I wasn't aware of that? (serious question on my part)

It's not so. It was so early on in the season. He was at something terrible like 35% early on but he completely turned it around by the end of the season, turning that weakness into a strength.

Eichel is a beast. Eichel vs Mcdavid will be the new Crosby vs ovechkin

Buffalo will be a force very soon

From what I've seen at the World Championship he's ready for the next level. Can't wait to see him tear it up in the NHL.

This is simply not true. I followed him closely that game and he had one good shift in the second period, his best shift of the game where he got 2 good shots away. Every other shift he was invisible.

He went 15 for 21 on draws vs Russia. And got his fair share of Malkin. More than held his own

Eichel's 18 and schooling the Russian national Team, but he's not skating circles around Kids in the CHL, so he's invisible. :help:

He was? I didn't see that.
Given the context his performance was exceptional. Maybe schooling wasn't the right word but he was most definitely one of the best players on the ice.

His defensive play was extremely impressive.
