Makes me think about Jason Allison now.

(Stylistically from reading and yt)

I was in Erie on Sunday and did a post-game write up on Vilardi and all the other big name prospects in the game -- drafted and undrafted.

C Gabe Vilardi (8/16/99, 6’3/201): Vilardi had a strong overall game, showing off soft hands and a deadly shot. He didn’t get off to the best start as his over-stickhanding led to a turnover and a 2-on-1 goal by Alex DeBrincat, but a mistake like that is nothing more than an anomaly. Yes, his skating still looks awkward and he couldn’t shine on a power play loaded with playmakers. He did, however, show aggressiveness and dedication to the forecheck and penalty kill. I really like this kid, whose superior IQ will serve him well at the highest level. He too was less than a month from 2018 draft eligibility.

He's ranked 12th on the Top-500 rankings we'll release tomorrow, trailing only Patrick (No. 1) and Tippett (No. 6) among Canadian-born players. The skating is an issue and the only thing keeping him from going higher.

I really like Vilardi, but he really can't stay healthy. Didn't play yesterday for precautionary reasons on a LBI. I hope it is nothing similar to the issue with the injury from Hlinka.

Yea Vilardi's play this year has turned me into a believer, was a bit skeptical of him heading into this year, he's been rock solid tho.

Have seen him play sporadically throughout the year but his last two games have really impressed me. He is a beast on the boards. I think he has started to center his own line and won some big faceoffs against Pu ( ohl leader). The thing that stuck was his hockey iq so smart with the puck. I think if injuries would not have hampered him this year he would be in the conversation with Nico and Nolan I have him at 3.

Gabe Vilardi has been named the CHL Player of the Week for the week of February 27 to March 5, 2017.

Spitfires’ Gabriel Vilardi named CHL Player of the Week

Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that 2017 NHL Draft prospect Gabriel Vilardi of the Windsor Spitfires is the CHL Player of the Week for the week ending March 5 recording nine points including four goals and five assists in three games along with a plus-minus rating of plus-4.

Vilardi produced a trio of multi-point performances last week helping lead the offensive charge for the Mastercard Memorial Cup host Spitfires who won all three games. The highlight of his week came Sunday recording a career-high five points including his second hat-trick of the season plus two assists as first star of a 7-1 win over the Sudbury Wolves. Vilardi and the Spitfires also shone in Sportsnet’s spotlight winning twice before a national audience against two CHL ranked clubs. On Thursday he scored a goal and an assist as first star of a 4-3 overtime triumph against the fifth ranked Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, then picked up two assists Saturday as second star in a 4-1 win over the fourth ranked London Knights. The Spitfires now carry a record of 39-15-5-3 and remain fifth in the OHL’s Western Conference standings.

A 17-year-old from Kingston, ON, Vilardi is playing in his second season with the Spitfires who chose him second overall in the 2015 OHL Priority Selection. With 28 goals and 31 assists for 59 points in 43 games, Vilardi is listed third overall among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting for the 2017 NHL Draft. He competed in January’s Sherwin-Williams CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Quebec City scoring a goal for Team Cherry in their 7-5 win.

Also considered for the award this week was Tyler Wong of the Lethbridge Hurricanes who scored three goals and seven assists for 10 points in four games, and Mathieu Sévigny of the Drummondville Voltigeurs who scored five goals and two assists for seven points in three games.
In his last 13 games, he has 11 goals, 23 points (1.77 points per game). This includes 4 goals, 9 points in his last 3 games.

His season totals currently stand at 28 goals, 59 points in 43 games.

I think you'll see a strong improvement in Vilardi's skating next year after working on it this summer. He's a hell of a player, extremely smart and as noted one of the youngest in the draft. He's been Windsor best player all year.

came away really impressed in this game (time stamps in description for highlight stuff)
great board work, puck protection and around the net
showed some good 200foot game making some good defensive (for the most part) and offensve plays
matched with Strome's line on most shifts

How does he compare to Dylan Strome? Based on the descriptions he sounds a lot like him but with worse offense. Centre with weak skating but incredibly smart player.

Yeah, I understand why a Strome comparison could be made at face value or on paper. Similar size, skating issues, intelligence, skill level at the center ice position. Squint and at times they even look alike on tape.

To me though there's one big difference: Vilardi just works much harder along the boards and down low to create his own space and not just take what's given. He's a lot better under physical pressure and even thrives off it. That clip above is pretty textbook Vilardi -- he does stuff like that all the time when I watch.

Slower than Horvat at the same age for sure. Needs to get some quickness. You can see on the transitions he slips behind the play.

Yeah Vilardi is really not much like Strome at all. Completely different players. Strome has the better numbers but I wouldn't be surprised at all if Vilardi turns out to be the better player. I know which guy I'd like in a playoff game anyway.

Vilardi is one of the youngest players eligible for the 2017 NHL Draft. He doesn't turn 18 until August 16, 2017.

At his age there's still plenty of room for improvement, especially on his skating, which I heard isn't elite but not bad either. Can see the Devils picking him if there one of the bottom 3.

Seems to be among the top choices for #3

Hopefully if the Avs do fall, they only fall to #3 because I've watched quite a few videos of Gabriel Vilardi and I really really like him. He'd be a great addition to the Avalanche forward group and would certainly help in forming a comfortable Top 6. I can already imagine him on a line with Tyson Jost :D. Jost isn't small but Vilardi is even taller :D.

Landy - Mack - Rants
- Jost - Vilardi ;)
