I see Vilardi a lot like I did Draisaitl in his draftyear. Stylistically they're not that similar but both have an incredibly high skill level and if Vilardi can just improve his skating to the level Draisaitl did, he's going to be a beauty in the NHL.

I really don't think he's a top 5-top 10 talent but I said the same thing about Logan Brown last year (I argued vehemently that he had a high chance of being a bust) and I like Vilardi a lot more than him.

His hat trick today consisted of a move to the backhand through the crease, an excellent cut to the middle of the ice for a terrific shot, and an aggressive jam play where he overpowered the defenceman with his strength.

I am standing by my Alexander Frolov comparison.

Gabe is a player that teams would love to have; he just needs to work on his skating ability. If he can become more mobile, he will be an effective NHL player. He is too intelligent and skilled not to be a wonderful player, and his hand-eye is top-notch.

A few point highlights from the last two weeks:

I agree with the knocks against his skating. I've watched him on tv a bunch of times this year and it wasn't until I saw him live that I seen what everyone was talking about. On tv, his skating looked fine, maybe a little average, but fine. However when I seen him live I was shocked to see how bad it really was. Despite his skating he still puts up really good numbers and I will go out on a limb a say he has been the most consistent Spitfire this year. If he can get his skating up to NHL standards, he's going to be a really good all-round versatile forward.

He knew Patrick would light the lamp and contribute so he knew he had to as well. I think if Vilardi can keep playing like he did tonight he could get himself into the convo.

no one is in the tier of Patrick but I think it'll be a good battle between Vilardi, Hischier and Tippett for who comes out of tier 2 on top

Hischier is closing that gap pretty effectively IMO. Vilardi is a step behind. I don't even think Tippet is top 5 right now, top 10 for sure though. My top 10 right now.

1. Nolan Patrick - RC/RW - 6'3 - 198#
2. Nico Hischier - LC - 6'0 - 174#
3. Gabe Vilardi - RW/RC - 6'2 - 192#
4. Tim Liljegren - RD - 6'0 - 198#
5. Casey Mittelstadt - LC/LW - 6'1 - 201#
6. Kailer Yamamoto - LW/RW - 5'8 - 160#
7. Martin Necas - RC/RW - 6'0 - 168#
8. Elias Pettersson - LW/LC - 6'2 - 161#
9. Nick Suzuki - RC - 5'11 - 183#
10. Owen Tippet - RW - 6'2 - 203#

17 goals, 17 assists, 34 points in 24 games so far this season.

Was very good vs Ottawa tonight. Had 2a but hit a post and set up a teammate for a tap in that he some how put wide so the stat line could've been even better. His skating might not be elite but it's not a concern. His vision and hands are amazing. Should be a top 5 lock but who knows come draft day

Gabe has scored only two points in his last six games, and has been pointless in five of those matches. Since that hat trick game, he has been cold.

Before this cold streak, he had 17 goals, 34 points in 24 games. He now has 36 points in 30 games.

He was terrific at the Top Prospects game, although he had only one goal to show for it. Has this also been the case with Windsor over these past few weeks?

I was at that game and honestly, I don't think he was terrific. Of course he's been involved, took some good shots on the net, but to me he didn't lived up to the expectations for a projected 3rd/4th pick overall. Not that he was bad, but he didn't looked like a Top 5 player in next years draft. And I was really high on him before this game. Still love his game of course, only one game won't change my mind on him but he wasn't that great.

Many things I've read about make me think Dylan Strome, how comparable are these guys?

Don't think they're much comparable at all, except both being big men with slow feet.

Are they not both big slow centers with good hands and good offensive IQ with wide ranges in shot selections? Or am I missing something in addition to on this? Dirve/determination diferences? Vilardi seems more apt to forechecking.

Vilardi plays with more intensity and seems a bit more adaptable in my viewings.

I also think Vilardi is a fair bit stronger, Strome is lanky and not filled in. Granted, Strome's draft year numbers blow Vilardi's out of the water and his numbers weren't that inflated by McDavid if you look at what he did when apart (I think he was around 1.4 to 1.5 ppg) and it is not like Windsor lacks talent when healthy.

Is this translating to a safer pick (higher floor) and less risk? Or is it possible that Vilardi is more suitable for a wing position?

I think knowing what you knew at the 2015 draft Strome would be viewed as the better prospect by a sizable margin (Strome would be challenging for 1OA in this draft). Vilardi might be safer because he plays a bit more of a direct game and has had success on the wing. He strikes me as someone who is more likely to make something happen, whereas Strome waits for the game to come to him a bit much for my liking. Vilardi plays more like Tavares, whereas Strome plays more like Spezza. Although both are long-shots to have that type of success.

I'd give you an upvote if I could :)

Anyone have any feedback on this guys potential upside? I'm curious, since I don't know too much about Vilardi myself frankly.
If he can make the same improvement Tavares and Draisaitl made in their skating he can be a 1st line nhl player. That is a big ask though, he may not have the mechanic's and foundation to make that type of jump.

So with that in mind, hes more likely to be a Brayden Schenn type? a 2nd/3rd line offensive forward?
