Does Petterson have a problem with gaining weight or does he just need to go through puberty?

But seriously, he looks like he's 14.

He has gain a lot of weight this last 2 season, 14/15 season, he was listed around 50 kilos.

So hes for sure not going to consider competing for a pre-season look even?
I'm 99% sure theres a NHL clause in the deal or Pettersson and his agent would be stupid.

Not that he's NHL ready, because he's likely 2-3 years away. Everything depends on how fast he can gain mass. The skill and IQ is very evident.

Edit: Also can't teams invite players to a try out contract for the pre-season?

Well, Hjalmarsson signed with Luleå at the end of the 06/07 season but still played for the Blackhawks organisation after that summer (so he never played for Luleå). But Pettersson still needs a few years.

Wasn't it the same with Dennis Everberg and Luleå or am i mistaken?

Also before someone asks, best place for Pettersson to gain mass and develop is in a more skill, less physical league in the SHL over the AHL IMO.

Well it wouldn't be the first time a super lanky but super skilled guy made an NHL roster lacking size. Just wondering more if we'd get to see him in some pre-season games at all or if hes basically locked into the SHL next year.

He would need to sign an NHL deal before August 15th and obviously want to come play. I would imagine a team picking him in the top-5 or top-10 would want him at camp.

I decided to re-examine Elias Pettersson's performance at the 2017 World Juniors. I came away unimpressed. I will very likely do a scouting package to capture the state of his game as well as highlight some of his deficiencies. I would not consider him a candidate to be selected in the Top 5.

As expected for a player of his weight class, he doesn't engage physically and is knocked off of the puck easily. His first step requires work, as he isn't particularly explosive. In these games, he played wing. Throughout the matches, he tended to wait for an outlet pass and hung up pretty high in his own zone while his team was defending; during board battles, he relied solely on his ability to fish for the puck and kept at least an arm length's distance from the opposing players along the boards. He never pressed up against the opposition or tried to engage with his body.

When he did receive the puck, he demonstrated poise and was able to make skilled passes or make a move with the puck; however, he struggled to maneuver around his opponents as once they pushed against him, he lost his balance. Defensively, he has a tendency to cheat a little bit, and he doesn't use his body to impede the opposition. At this point in time, he is an entirely finesse player. He doesn't possess much balance on his skates.

For example, here he gets thrashed by 6'1'', 172 lbs defenceman Jake Bean.

Here, he takes a tumble against 6'2'', 186 lbs defenceman Noah Juulsen.

Against Team Denmark:

*on the following play, he does not step on any sticks, but instead buckles as he tries to guard the puck.

Here's one example of him fishing and then cheating on the same shift:

There was, however, one display of high-end skill in the game against Team Denmark:

He doesn't have the skating ability to compensate for his lack of strength and balance. He needs to become stronger to play in the NHL.

A few have pegged him as a Top 5 pick. He has excellent skill, but for the reasons that I have given, he will likely find himself being drafted with a late single-digit or early-teen selection. There is some inherent risk to this selection. That said, quite a few of the players in this draft class are risky in different ways.

He didnt have the best world jr but i think whoever gets him will have one hell of a player. He looked better as the year went on when i seen him as well, some of the highest skill in the draft.

I agree that he was a big disapointment in wjc, and it should off course lower the expectations little bit, but those 2 gifs looks more like accidents to me (hard to see what really happen when it comes to the Bean tackle) and his season overall has been very good.

The importance of the World Junior performance in evaluating him is that it was played on the North American-sized ice surface this year.

His success in Allsvensken has taken place on the large international surface on which there is far more room to skate and avoid contact with other bodies. The opposition is effectively trying to defend on open ice, so he can maneuver around them with a deke or pick up enough momentum to skate past them. When other bodies are there to impede him, he appears to have quite a bit of trouble; he doesn't have enough strength to squeeze by along the boards or push past the opposition, so when they position themselves smartly on the small surface, he doesn't have anywhere to go.

If he is already being pushed off of the puck by lean, 175 to 185 lbs defencemen and struggling to stay upright, he is going to face monumental difficulty against heavy defenders.

It is true that one may be enamored by his talent, but one must also take into account how well it will translate to the NHL level. One hopes by selecting him that he will overcome this obstacle, but it is quite a mighty obstacle at this moment in time.

Its very hard to tell if ice surface will hamper his game or he simply needs time to adjust like many who make the transition oversea's. I wouldnt dock him given a small sample size on north american ice but that is just me, others might see it as a valid issue. As for the weight I personally dont put alot of stock in weight for players at this age, i remember the controversy over nylander who was smaller but stronger and some were still concerned over his size and every year people are always concerned with highly skilled players filling out or size (keller a recent one), I believe he will fill out like most players do as they grow and adjust. Yes he might struggle now against 185 dmen but he also has time to add weight himself.

I think you are really over-exaggerating things based on a few GIFS.

It's easy to criticize every player in this draft. Pettersson has really high end skill, the best hockey sense in this draft, decent size, a nice all around game, and high end production in his draft season in a men's league.
