Many posters had such strong hot takes about this selection and how awful it was that I don't expect them to do a 180 this quickly.

I mean this kid is a Toronto Maple Leafs draft pick
Many of those hot takes came from Maple Leaf posters. Just go take a look at the thread on the Leafs board when he was drafted. Very similar to the Minten thread.

What do people see as his NHL comparison? Is there a current NHL player that looks like him?

Not saying there isn’t. I’m trying to think of a high-end comparable and I’m not finding a great one.

Anyone have a better idea than I do?

I see a bit of Konecny in his game. Purely on play style to me that is the one that always pops when I am watching.

He seems like a gilmour comparison. Marner was also a gilmour comparison.

Maybe a Marner with a little bit of Darcy tucker? This is just from what I’ve seen and heard others say though. I don’t go to London knights games.

I feel like Point is a good comparison... not saying he will hit that level, but just how he plays.

Trevor Moore but with a faster development path so more time to figure out higher upside. Same general skill set but instead of spending 5 development years on the Marlies or Toronto’s 4th line, he’ll be getting reps in a middle 6 with NHL talent by age 20-21.

How is Cogliano a bad comp?
Middle 6 forward with speed to burn and a good motor?

But then again, Leafs fans NEVER overrate their own prospects.
Cogliano has been a career 3rd-4th liner. That is closer to his floor then his ceiling. Sport fans get excited about prospects in all sports and all fandoms. If you think this is somehow a Toronto Maple Leaf fan thing you need to expand your horizons a little bit.

No, it is a Toronto Maple Leafs thing. I know you can’t see that in your media bubble but everyone else in the hockey world can.

Cogliano has had an amazing career. 1200+ games and 450 points with a Stanley cup. Cowan would be esctatic to have a career that spans that long.

You are stuck in your own bubble if you think it is a Toronto Maple Leaf thing. Seriously.

Every small player in junior nowadays has someone think they’re Brayden Point.

Describe Point's playing style and then describe what you think Cowan's is and see if they match... they seem close to me but thank you for your insightful input.

No one is saying he will be point, just styles match.

IMO Knies doesn’t deserve A spot anywhere close to top 50. Another overrated Leaf prospect I guess.

I went Mateychuk.

This is a good example of your player assessment of the past.

A player who was producing worse than Cowan in their d+1 is a better prospect than Knies in 2022.

That player is not doing too much now either...

You seem to just dislike the Leafs and lose credibility by posting about them

So. Let me get this straight. Because I said Matthew Knies, who only has 7 points in 14 games this season isn’t a top-50 prospect in the NHL I lose credibility???

There is a difference between being realistic with what you expect from a player and hating them. You and Your leaf friends don’t seem to understand this concept. In what world is getting a good 3rd line player with the 28th overall pick A bad thing???

In the world that Cowan is on Logan Stankoven, Jordan Kyrou, Bobby Brink etc type development

Dude is dominating in his D+1 year and looks to be a heavy riser

Stankoven is now dominating the AHL, likely will be a 60+ pt producer

Kyrou is a 75 pt player for the blues

Brink will be a 50-60 pt forward after 3-4 years of development.

Cowan is having a monster D+1 year. If this was Fraser Minten after his D+1 year I would say the Cogliano projection/expectation would be very fair for Minten

Cowan is looking a lot more promising than Minten though, so a higher end projection makes sense. Not brayden point high maybe but still someone who is a good top 6 player with ability to PK and play a grit style game
