How So? both are small wingers that aren’t the best skaters?
Cowan is more of a disruptor out there and faster in a straight line. Dumais cuts teams up by just being way smarter then everyone else on the ice. Both really good prospects but I just don't think they play the game in the same way. Pro potential I would say Dumais has a higher top end potential if he hits but also if the offense doesn't translate I doubt he is ever a checking line player and just ends up in Europe. Cowan I can see carving out a career in the bottom 6 if the offense doesn't translate based off the way he plays the game.

He seems to get a lot of points off the rush
From what I've seen, most of his points have been created from winning battles or forcing turnovers in the defensive end and then getting odd man rushes going the other way. Many being shorthanded. Will bode well for the Leafs in the future.

If he becomes a 50-60 pt player, who plays with an edge and plays in all situations, this will be an absolute home run pick and the Leafs could use 2 or 3 more forwards just like him.

Darcy Tucker Lite.

With 3 assists tonight that brings his totals to 21 points in 11 games.

It’d be one thing if he were a one-dimensional offensive player putting up those numbers, but he brings the intangibles as well. Like the energy and competitiveness he brings is unique and makes him such a dynamic player on the penalty kill.

His trajectory since being drafted has been insane. From his performance in the rookie tournament, to being the best player on the ice in NHL pre-season at times, to now lighting the OHL on fire… it’ll be fun to see where he ends up in the future if he keeps this up. Would love to see him at the World Juniors!

Think it would be tough to keep him off honestly. He's so versatile and can really play any forward position and anywhere in the line up and both special teams.

Hard to not say he's been the best OHL player so far this season.
Carson Rehkopf has been and it isn’t close.

Yeah I'm sure it's not even close just like how Cowan's ceiling is only a 3rd liner

Compared to teammates, Cowan is blowing his out of the water. Buncha people on Kitchener putting up crazy points.
Show me where I ever said his ceiling his only a 3rd liner and I’ll eat crow. I have never once said this so you putting words in my mouth because you can’ take someone being realistic of a prospect of your team says alot of you.I have said the likley result of Cowan is that he becomes a third liner. In what world is that bad for a player drafted 28th overall. You need to get your expectations in check.

So Cowan playing with teammates that can’t keep up like San Jose second round pick Kasper Haltunnen and Philidelphia third round pick Denver Barkey means Cowan is having an extra good year as a result? i hate to break it to you but Cowan plays with some really good players in London, too.

Saying that ”it’s hard to not say Cowan has been the best forward in the OHL” while emitting the fact there has been many standout performances reeks of overhyping a prospect. he has been very good, but so have a handful of others.

A more factual statement would be “Cowan has been among the best forwards in the OHL this year“

How can he be among the best if its not even close?

Kitchener GF per game = 4.8
London GF per game = 3.8

Cowan PPG = 1.91
Rehkopf = 1.88

Next two highest scorers on their team:
Kitchener: 1.65, 1.65
London: 1.37, 1

Cowan plays both special teams, and is a force on the PK. He literally has more points on the PK than PP right now lmao. Rehkopf also shooting at over 40% the time of this post, I'm sure that is sustainable.

But yes, please tell me how its not even close that he could be the best player currently in the OHL 😂

You know exactly what you were trying to do coming in here with that comment.

Sorry you took so much offense to my comment. It wasnt meant to be taken so serious but you for some reason have a bone to pick.

And of those 21, only 3 on the PP. 1.6 EV/SH points per game is absolutely stupid.

I doubt either stay that high, but he's got a big buffer for those numbers to stay impressive

Many posters had such strong hot takes about this selection and how awful it was that I don't expect them to do a 180 this quickly.

I mean this kid is a Toronto Maple Leafs draft pick and ripping up the OHL, after having a great NHL training camp and still this thread is only 7 pages in total.

You'd assume under normal circumstances this would be a 20-30 page thread.

When do World Junior camps open?

I have tickets for Barrie vs London for November 25th and really wanted to watch him play but am thinking he'll likely be gone at camp if it's open by then.

Good point. That is strange.

As much as we're rivals, I have to be honest about how good of a pick the Leafs made. But I am partial to this kind of player.

Says Dec 10-14, so should be in the clear.
