Strome is dealing with an underlying factor that the public will find out about following the conclusion of the playoffs.

For those just tuning in now, Strome is not 100%, and judging him off a sample size as small as a playoff series is, to put it loosely, far-fetched.

Do you know this for certain? I would be surprised if it was a bigger injury

Grigorenko also didn't have one of the best prospects to ever exist playing as his 1C whilst he played against 2nd tier competition.

Strome even strength points per game with McDavid: 1.16
Strome even strength points per game w/o McDavid: 1.14

For anyone that says this (not singling you out) has he been faster prior to these playoffs? I get the impression reading the posts here that everyone has just started watching him play recently.

No, he's a pretty poor skater. For people railing and hating on Draisaitl's skating, he's a MUCH better skater than Strome. Drai's top speed is actually incredibly fast (he won fastest skater in Oiler skills competition, but if you watch him a lot you can see it; he can turn on the jets when he wants to); he just has a bit of a slow first step or two, which he's really improved on. Strome is just all around slow. But he can work on it, though it will take some time, which maybe makes him a bit of a project in that way.

Strome is still a very good prospect, but I'd put him below Marner, Provorov and Hanifin.

And Strome still scored at a very high pace when that prospect was out for 6 weeks with a Broken hand/WJC commitments this season, so thats a bit of an unfair criticism IMO.

Playoffs might be a fair critique, but apparently is playing hurt so you have to factor that in.

Has this affected him all year, or what's his excuse for the rest of the season?

It's not far fetched. It's exactly what it is. If they aren't going to devuldge his injury then people will comment on his play -- which has been poor by any standard -- let alone a top 5 pick.

A young man who won the OHL scoring title needs no excuse.

It has not affected him all season.

He wasn't any more impressive during the regular season really. Same flaws, but managed to rack up lots of points against weaker competition. Good player, but maybe not the franchise player he's been hyped as.

Strome has a chronic injury problem? So you're saying he's injury prone? GeeZe, no thanks.

I've only seen Draisaitl play a few games at the WC last year and his skating looked terrible.

Was just gonna say this. The few games a saw during the regular season before McDavid got injured and during, he wasn't anything spectacular. I feel like the guys just racks up points on the PP. He has no intensity whatsoever and has been an absolute floater in the playoffs.

His skating has improved leaps and bounds, and that's a very small sample size, as has been said. He's still a bit slow on his first step, but once he gets to top speed, look out! He's can really turn the jets on when he sees an opening.

Strome isn't there yet, but it's possible he can improve quickly like Drai did. That was kind of my point. Though I think he has more work to do, because he's always looked slower to me than Drai ever did.

Speed was not the reason Schemp didn't make the nhl.

Speed along with a combination of other factors are the reason he didn't make it. But speed was a big part of why he couldn't make it to the NHL as even a PP specialist.

Strome's Top end: Jason Allison

Strome's likely trajectory: Josh Bailey

Strome's low end: Joe Colborne

Why would you waste your 3rd pick on a guy like this when you could have Crouse, Barzal, or Marner?

Because the word of some random on HFboards probably isn't completely accurate?

If he's not injured, Strome's got a whole series and maybe Mem Cup to prove he can be a game changer. If he is, he's a wildcard pick. The Coyotes, like the Leafs, are going to be really tempted by what Strome represents.
