If this were true he wouldn't have been drafted 15th, he would have been drafted first overall.

Kinda like Getzlaf and Kopitar were picked 1st overall? Drafting is a crap-shoot. They are called "prospects" for a reason.

I just don't see how anyone can possibly compare him to Filppula, what-so-ever. You'd be better off comparing him to Draper than to Filppula. Two completely different players; one is soft and shows up on occasion, the other is all heart and plays like a well-oiled-machine every shift. Will the offense come? Who knows....

I was actually thinking, based on the descriptions I've read of him, he sounds like a Draper with more potential offensive upside. Though, wasn't Draper an incredible scorer in the juniors? Or was that Maltby?

Maltby was a 50 goal scorer in juniors.

Scoring 30 goals in 60 games for the US U18 is pretty impressive. Keep in mind that while they play a lot of USHL teams, a good chunk of their schedule is against NCAA teams where they are essentially a team of teenagers playing full grown adults. The U18s are usually outmatched in most games.

Good point. Nobody scored 30 goals last year, for example. Larkin actually would have been #2 in points (by only three points( while having played 7 fewer games. That's with no first unit PP time and just okay linemates.

Of course, this is a powerhouse NTDP team, but Larkin was a big part of it and his numbers weren't padded in any way.

edit: in fact, I'm not sure there's been an NTDP team as offensively dominant as this one. Stats sure seem to indicate that. Although it's a little confusing because it appears that number of games played has changed over time.

Eichel scored 38 goals.

Larkin gives some credit to one of those "okay" linemates, who had 38 assists, in this article.

I think "okay" probably sums him up pretty well. He went undrafted. Actually, his other linemate, Anders Bjork, was the one who managed to get drafted.

But the real thing to assess is not so much that Hitchcock and Bjork suck, but how much better Milano and Tuch were. and they were a lot better. My point was that Larkin was good enough to play in that #1 center slot, it's just that he had an exceptional talent to contend with. So what we end up with is a statistical picture that doesn't completely describe what Larkin can do in that top line role like all the other prospects in the first round.

Yes, I know that. That was this year.

But before that, we're going back to Rocco Grimaldi I think for a 30 goal scorer. and god knows the Rock was a great player at that level. Reid Boucher that same year, too. Helluva goalscorer. Nearly scored a goal a game in the OHL his last year.

Hmmmm, I guess when I think of last year, I think of the season that just ended. But yes, now I understand what you are getting at and you're right. Most of the top talent of the NDTP the last few years haven't even scored 20 goals. Guys like Kerdiles, Matteau, Biggs, Compher etc.

My contention the entire season was that his two linemates were masking his true offensive output. Eichel has his bursts of attack, but also has lulls. Larkin is more in your face non-stop. Larkin-Milano-Tuch may have even put more pressure on teams in an attacking sense.

Okay is more than acceptable to classify undrafted/low round drafted two way wingers who don't come near the class of Milano/Tuch.

Larkin with 3 points (2 goals, 1 assist) tied for the lead on USA's blue team. Doing pretty well for being the 3C behind Eichel (1 pt) and Malone (0 pts).

Here's his GWG

as of right now leads b1g ten in freshman points, and is number1 b1g ten in apples with 13. i see a lot of talk about warenski becasue of this year being his draft year and not to take away from him but i have seen alot of people talk about how dominate larkin has been and how most nights hes u of m's best player, michigan is starting to get it together and hes putting in work. gotta love it

i usally visit yost a couple times of year and cant wait to see him live, but am very impressed to see his stats this far. cant wait till wjc this year, i got a feeling hes going to have a strong outing.

If Sheahan is Getzlaf lite with a chance to develop, Larkin is Toews lite with a chance to develop too. The Wings cannot trade either since at worst, if they continue on a conservative growth curve, they'll both be at least 2C good. Personally, I think they'll be 1aC and 1bC centering Mantha, Nyquist, Tatar, Jurco, Franzen, Pulkkinen, Weiss within a few years.

Larkin is more like a Kesler imo

Disagree. I know the scouts are saying that to lower expectations especially since they called Sheahan our Getzlaf after he was drafted and regretted the pressure it put on him... but Larkin's game is nothing like Kesler's. He's not a gritty agitator who likes to hit. He's a point producer first with a solid all around game. Kesler has a great all around game, but his ceiling was always lower than Larkin/Toews (keep in mind, I'm not equating Larkin to Toews, people who haven't read the whole thread). The Wings expect him to be a Selke guy... but in the Yzerman, post-Bowman mold, not the Draper mold. Larkin is the Wings 1C hope, believe it... or they'll trade Mantha for exactly that since Sheahan is showing he'll be at least a 2C for his career if he doesn't drop off precipitously.
