Well Larkin is on an NHL squad which had WAY more depth than Toronto so it would have been tougher to make the team.

Nylander isn't playing for the leafs

advantage Larkin

More depth = can be sheltered easier.

Sorry, but tonight's game has changed that. At least for the time being.

People can yap about small sample sizes all they want, it's extremely rare for a teenager (two months removed from 18) to step in and not miss a step. He's playing on an NHL 1st line with Henrik Zetterberg and is not being sheltered at all.

Ekblad

Larkin

Everyone else

That's where we stand as of now for the 2014 draft, imo.

Someone forgot Pasta who looks great and does everything on the ice.

Beastly. Need to see more and against better teams but just plain beastly.

Perfect storm of a dynamite talent with great head on his shoulders being put in a position to succeed, gonna be fun to watch.

Agreed. It's just pointless comparing a guy at this point playing in the AHL with those in the NHL. I also take issue with your comment about throwing out Virtanen as I see him as being at least equal to Nylander.

I personally don't like him too much. Big fan of Mccann though. To each their own I guess.

Right, because Detroit shelters their first line.

its one game lol. Sample size is needed.

Leafs want to be 100% sure Nylander is ready. They don't want to be sending him up and down. Sure he looked good in camp but will he be looking the same in March? Think it's very likely Larkin will play good but theres also a shot he gets worn down come crunch time.

Also I think you could say Larkin playing with Zetterberg is him being sheltered. Nylander, if on the Leafs, would be the go-to guy on his line (due to how ****ing horrible toronto is). Larkin isn't the go-to on his line.

Inb4 Larkin > Zetterberg.

I never understand this X teenage prospect is greater than Y teenage prospects. All these kids are young and obviously have a lot of hockey to play. Regardless, it looks like Detroit got themselves quite a keeper.

Amazing NHL debut tonight. The kid is going to be a stud in the NHL for many years to come.

... and what's even more exciting is he's just going to get better each and every game. It's going to be a fun season to watch him evolve into an elite player!

EDIT: Oops, did I accidentally post this Larkin comment in the Nylander thread?

I think the thing I was most impressed with was his poise and ability to play through contact. Sturdy guy with a real high panic threshold. Any talk in wing land about plans for his transition to centre? Any chance this year or locked on wing for the foreseeable future?

I think the fact he can play on the wing is a big reason he's up with the Wings right now. With Datsyuk returning in a month or so it's hard to see Larkin getting any extended time in the middle this year.

He'll be playing center sooner rather than later. The Wings just have the most ridiculous logjam of forwards I have ever seen. I actually think he plays much better at center because he has the ability to control the pace of the game much more than when he's on the wing. Its really hard to give a timetable of when he will play center full time to be honest. It's anyone's guess.

He's always been a natural centre. They just wanted him up on the big team and those spots are already occupied. And he probably needs to work on faceoffs at the NHL level.

Larkin was good today. It was one game, but you could see the potential there.

For anyone watching the game on Sportsnet and those who didn't, Glenn Healy actually called him "Dylan McDavid"

For it's worth he also said Larkin was from Scarborough...

Larkin was amazing against the Leafs, he was all over the ice.

He's a very very very good skater. His acceleration is excellent.

Very impressive first NHL game. :handclap:

I wanted the Sharks to get Larkin last year. He was projected around our pick then and I was expecting him to be a top tier spark plug type forward. Like one of those guys that are mainstays on the 3rd line. It's pretty cool that the expectations for him are leaps and bounds past that now.

Watched the game. And regarding the discussion back a moment ago:

First of all, Larkin had a great game.

Secondly, my persecption about him only strengthened. He was the high motor guy who almost every time with the puck goes directly to the net rather than slows the game down and seeks for passing options (he didn't really do that at all). He's really strong on the boards and corners for a guy his age.

Sure the goaltending and defending from Toronto was absolutely brutal on all of those goals (and goals where Larkin potted points). If Abdelkader scores a hattrick you know there's something like that going on. :D

Did I see a player who is going to be puck possession wise similar to Kopitar/Toews and be a dominant playmaker? No. Did I see a player who will create a tons of scoring chances thanks to his really strong skating and work around corners/boards with the ability to hold the puck all the time? Yes.

Sure, he was playing as a winger and Z was the center, but he played pretty much the same kind of game as I have seen him done so far.

I think Larkin fits really well to the Detroit Red Wings of Jeff Blashill. They play a lot more faster hockey than they did under Babcock, and Larkin will benefit from it big time.

If he keeps up a good scoring pace and good play, we'll be making room for him no doubt. Babcock isn't coach any more.
