Why are we doing a redraft less than a year in? Wait until we see some NHL time before we start declaring what these guys can be

Prospect lists change on a weekly basis prior to the draft. Lots can change (in a player's development) in 8 months and it's always interesting to evaluate/compare.

edit: others have commented on the topic, it's OT, so mod can remove the post

good thing he said prospect

It's still a little early to definitively call him a 1C prospect. Top 6 center prospect is more accurate (still up from the middle 6 center prospect he was called around the draft).

I'm sky-high on this guy. Think that he will be a cornerstone player going forward. He has surpassed all expectations.

Ugh... at this rate I will begin to fan-girl. Hard.

Still a little early to say that definitively

It's not early to call him a 1C prospect. I didn't say he would definitely become a 1C. The guy has a great two way game and is outproducing other established 1C's like Toews when they were college freshmen. And he's only getting better. That qualifies as a 1C prospect in my opinion.

I mean, look at how Gaudreau is producing as a rookie and he was only a PPG his freshman year. Larkin is around ~1.5 PPG right now.

I started the Larkin going pro talk months ago and I still find it hard to see him not going pro...kid is destroying college hockey...not saying he makes the Wings but I don't expect him in the NCAA next year...sorry but I don't..

It's not rare for a player to tear up college and return for another year.

I am not even basing it off of stats but his overall play and demeanor. the kid just looks like a pro on both sides of the puck.

I selfishly want him to stay at Michigan just to see the chaos he, Werenski, and Kyle Connor will cause next year...but I just have my doubts this kid sticks around and chance an injury if he and the Red Wings deem him ready to turn pro...we have seen it before with their top guys going to the AHL first, just saying my gut tells me he signs and leaves Michigan. I hope I am wrong as Michigan would be a top contender next year with that incoming class and Larkin, Werenski, and Compher/Motte

I agree. It pains me as Michigan fan but there is not much he has left to prove at the NCAA level. His stats are likely to be really high again next year too, the Wolverines will be really good...

He just doesn't need to iron out his offensive game, he is ready for the next level.

A little discussion lately that he might be a one a done. If that is the case you can expect him to sign in the next couple of weeks. I still have my doubts, but there are discussions going on in terms of what his next step should be.

If Larkin wants to play the next year at U of M it will die quickly, but if he is interested it seems the Wings are giving it deep thought in terms of making him a pro this spring still. Would be tough blow for the AHL contenders to watch him drop on to the hottest team in the league and only strengthen them even more.

Some stat talk for comparison's sake:

Larkin finished with 14+29=43 in 32 games. That's a 1.34 PPG, or roughly the same as Jonathan Toews' freshman sophomore season, as you can see from the tweet. Not a bad year by any means.

Note: if you can't see the tweet, refresh the page. It should come up then.

Edit: it was Toews' SOPHOMORE season, although they were the same age.

According the Mcguire the Leafs were REAALLLY Interested in drafting Larkin, and i kinda wish we had at this point. Going to be a terrific player to watch for years to come in Detroit

One of the more impressive things to me is Larkin's +/- considering how awful Michigan's goaltending is. Speaks to his defensive game and dominance with the puck when he's out on the ice. Rarely gets hemmed in his own zone, and when they do he finds a way to get the puck and move it out. His shot looks a little heavier to me than it was earlier in the year, passing looks more refined also. Making quick reads, firm, accurate passes.

I've said for awhile now I think he should turn pro after Michigan's season ends. Think he's ready and would be best for his development.

I don't necessarily know about "best for his development", it would definitely be a benefit in some ways to move up to another level, but staying at Michigan could be better for other things, like working on strength/conditioning with the lighter schedule load. Plus, he is getting his education, which is good for him after his hockey playing days are finished, and Berenson runs a good program for developing players. I get what you are saying, though, he doesn't really have a ton left to prove in college.

It it were any other team than Detroit, there would be more people saying he should be one and done in college hockey and start with the pros. Some other good players have spent time in the college hockey after a season like this too, like Nyquist for the Wings. I think he has played well enough that he doesn't necessarily need to stay, but he has earned the right to make whatever decision he wants. If he decides he is ready for the next level, the Wings will sign him and put him in Grand Rapids to finish this season and go from there. If he wants to be a part of this young group moving forward with the Wolverines, he will stay and probably take on a stronger leadership role next season and be more looked at as a top offensive player after a great freshman year (and without Hyman), which will also be good for his development.

I've said it before that he is ready for pro hockey, but I can see it from both sides. I won't be surprised either way, if he goes pro stays for another year. I might be surprised if he stays 3 or 4 years, but he can do whatever he wants. If trying to win a national championship and getting an education from a good university is a priority to him, I certainly wouldn't blame him.

Larkin will have better production with Connor next year than he did with Hyman this year

The thing about larkin is hes having a year similar to Nyquist did while Nyquist stayed, but you have to take their size into account. Larkin has pro size already and the wings were trying to allow Nyquist time to bulk up for the pro game. Size-wise Larkin is bigger than Nyquist ever will be.

I am starting to lean that he should go pro. I dont think strength and bulk is an issue for him like it would have been for Nyquist. But Larkin has never played a large sum of games in a season like in the pros. With the u18 development team he played 37 games on year and in the NCAA he wont play a whole lot more. More than bulking up, I think his body needs to get adjusted to the longer grind of a real season. Canadian junior players get this advantage but NCAA players dont

I'm still happy with Willie.

That being said I'd also be happy with Larkin.
