Are people starting to point out possibly non-existent weaknesses now that he is, almost assuredly, an Edmonton Oiler?

I'm a Leafs fan, and I'd love it if the Oilers could turn it all around. I know how Oilers fans feel...except they've been given even more hope than Leafs fans, and they're still abysmal.

Connor's gonna help turn them.

People have been pointing to the same weaknesses all along. His outside shot is a weakness. There's really no argument about it. Everything else, other than his strength level, is elite. McDavid's shot from outside needs to improve, which in part will come from adding some more overall strength. I will say that his shot is great in tight because of his ridiculous hands and quality accuracy. That's part of why he's so good at scoring in close, along with his quick feet and stick-handling. What you don't see from him as often is successfully sniping it from the circles. It'll come in time but it may never be elite like the rest of his tools, which would mean it's always a weakness relatively speaking. Nothing wrong with that.

That's fair, and come to think of it you're totally right.

Still think he figures it out though!

I mean you watch the guy in junior and he has everything. Size, speed, hands, shot, vision, passing. He's the total package. Hell, he even wins nearly every board battle by out-thinking his opponent. I doubt he will dominate along the boards in the NHL like he does now, but aside from that it looks like he will be top tier right from the start.

He's faster than most people in the NHL. He has better hands than most people in the NHL. He thinks the game at a higher level than ANYBODY in the NHL. The plays he makes in the OHL will translate over perfectly. Watch the way he protects the puck and seems to know where his teammates are at all times. Watch his highlights from the WJC where he makes ludicrous passes to Petan. Those are passes you'd only see a handful of NHLers able to make.

Crosby dominates because of his strength going into corners, his speed, his shot. In the CHL, Crosby was already a man strength-wise it seemed. He was so powerful in the way he skates and the way he could do his infamous 10-2 shielding of the puck. Only someone like Jeff Skinner is able to do that too.

McDavid is still weak in comparison and I feel that could be the only drawback going into next season. If he had the raw strength to muscle his way past people or wire shots at the velocity Crosby could at the same age, we would be calling him a significantly better prospect.

If McDavid can get that strong as learns how to shoot as hard as Crosby, he will easily be a better player.

I'd like to stress that strength in the CHL is everything. It's why you see older guys who will go nowhere usually high up on the scoring lists (most of the time). One year they are a 18 year old 4th line who has relatively no skill, and the next they are an overager who has 40 lbs of muscle over most opponents. They manhandle them and grind out goals relatively easy, and then fade into obscurity.

This is good stuff. For the most part, right on point, although I disagree with McDavid having a higher hockey IQ than Crosby. Strength is the real dividing factor between the two players. Crosby has it, and has always had it, McDavid doesn't have it, and who knows if he will ever have it. Part of strength is just the way you are built. No one knows how McDavid will develop in this regard, but it's dumb to just assume he will acquire Crosby-like strength through effort.

Crosby was hands down the better junior player. It isn't even close. People have short memories for this type of thing because they are always on to the shiny new toy. Crosby came in as a (barely) 16 year old and was far and away the best player in the Q. No one could hold a candle to him. McDavid, as a 16/17 year old, was third on his own team in scoring. Crosby's draft year was better than McDavid's too, and he was much younger. And if anyone thinks McDavid will score anywhere near 100 points in the NHL next year, they are crazy. Crosby did it on the second to last place team.

The problem with Crosby is he peaked as a 19 year old. Just hasn't gotten better since then, although if you are going to plateau, it's nice to plateau as the best player in the world. McDavid does have a chance to become a better player over time if his development curve lasts longer. I'll give him that.

Looking forward to the SSM - Otters series. I suspect there are only 6 games remaining in his junior career and then it's ShowTime... so let's enjoy them...the BEST and most NHL ready prospect since the early 90s. And he will be the best in the game by a country mile in his 3rd year.

Best in the game by his 3rd year?

Talk about super high expectations

Crosby was the best in the world in his second year.

Gretzky was the best in the world in his first year.

Lemieux was the best non-Gretzky player in his second year.

Orr was the best player in the world in his fourth year.

Ovi was the best player in the world in his third year.

McDavid being the best player in the world in his third year would certainly be within his hype.

The hype for Lemieux and Lindros were higher than Crosby, but Crosby was the better prospect.

Crosby in his draft-1 was the best player in the CHL. Lemieux, despite being 10 months older in his draft-1 year, was not. He was still a top 5 player, but not the best player in the league. Crosby is the only player in CHL history to win back-to-back player of the year before being drafted.

Tavares did it at 16, but not 17. Lemieux did it at 17, but not 16. Gretzky was only in the league at 16, but didn't do it.

Crosby's junior dominance in both his pre-draft years has never been replicated.

There was a guy in the CHL who scored more than 282 points in 1984?

Wow, unreal talent. Hat trick and carried his team. Bringing it when the games matter. Although SSM is a powehouse

I think we'll get to see him at the World Championship. A nice consolation.

Game 5 is on the 30th. Tourney starts on May 1st. May miss a game if it goes to 5, but could definitely make it in time. Could play with Hall or Eberle :amazed:

That's an accurate description of how I'm feeling. If he does go over it'll be a fun little preview of next season  Hopefully they'll be put together.

If he gets swept do you guys think he will be going over? It seems a little tight and another poster brought up a good point in another thread about how they would have to sit an NHL player who agreed to go just to have Mcdavid play. Personally I would love to see him go

McDavid couldn't carry. Obvious bust :sarcasm:

Realistically, SOO is stacked as **** and Nurse is gonna be glued on his ass the entire series so I don't think Erie is moving on :p

I don't see it I think his high school grad is coming up and he doesn't want to miss it. Yeah we forget these are just kids, lol.
