sucks that he's scratched. I made my special spicy chili especially for the game. damn. I figured he'd be scratched though. I never get tired of being right.

The way McDavid and Eichel are playing right now is special. It has reached Crosby/Ovechkin level. They both just keep raising their game to a higher level. Two extraordinary talents.

Man, drove up from Jersey just to watch the kid play. Dissapointed that he was scratched but hey that's life right! Strome helped to ease the pain. As well as Vince Dunn, Josh Ho-Sang, Perlini, Debrincat, Number 21 from Niagara Ice Dogs and especially Number 10 (diFuscio {sp}) on Niagara. Mantha was a happy surprise aswell.

Side Note: Sean Day was very sloppy and visibly frustrated the whole game last night.

Day just isn't a very good player unfortunately. The OHL started getting a little crazy with their exceptional status, I think Day might make them a bit more wary. Obviously as a fifteen year old he had tremendous tools (great size and phenomenal skating) that set him apart from his peers, but from my own perspective he's not a very smart player. Typical "all the tools, no toolbox" kinda guy.

I hope he has a big year next season though, I want him to succeed because when he's feeling it, it's a beautiful thing to watch. The guy reminds of a young Bouwmeester with how effortless his skating is. Truly in another league in that regard.

I'm with ya that there's nothing particularly exceptional about Day, but the OHL has no say in who is or isn't granted ES. The player makes the application and Hockey Canada makes the decision. But yes, HC did get a little giddy over this decision. no debate. In that decision perhaps HC assumed the role of the recruiting arm for the OHL... which they should not be doing.

True enough, and I should have worded it better. I merely said what I said because all the ES guys have been OHL picks, though if I recall correctly Benson was a consideration out west.

I won't say that there isn't anything exceptional about Day however. As mentioned, he was very big coming up and has put on a lot of weight to match his height, and his skating is extremely impressive, having drawn comparisons to Paul Coffey from Brian Kilrea. It's just unfortunate that Sean's brain can't keep up with his legs.

I think he applied but was refused, or something like that. He ended up not playing for Vancouver that year, thats all I know.

Memory is fuzzy, but I feel like there was heavy discussion that he was considering applying but eventually decided not to.

I hate to derail the thread even more, but does anyone remember the circumstances surrounding Tyler Benson's ES bid?

What's the alternative though? If HC turns down the application and Day ends up as a stellar player, we've just gifted a 15+ year contributor to the national program to the US. Day's citizenship made the matter doubly challenging as it gave him leverage other exceptional candidates simply aren't able to exert.

Day/Day's family doesn't have U.S. citizenship. The only thing Hockey Canada had to fear was Day opting to play NCAA. So, that's what I meant by Hockey Canada acting as the recruiting arm for the OHL. And even if at some point Day applies and receives U.S. citizenship, and then decides he wants to represent the U.S. internationally, then good for him. that's his choice. He was developed in the U.S.

Yeah I doubt Canada was worrying about Day jumping ship to the US. No US citizenship, no inkling that he or his family ever considered it either. Perhaps he was a weak candidate and shouldn't have been made exceptional, but let's remember the praise for this kid was through the roof before he got it. Kilrea I believe said he was the best skating 14 year old he's ever seen (and I'm sure Kilrea say a 14 year old Bobby Orr skate). He turned out to be not really ready to dominate the OHL as a 15 year old but he turned out to be a number one defensemen in his 16 year old season and right now should be considered one of the top prospects for next year even if he isn't a strong contender for first overall (even though he still is). Anyone who says he isn't a very good player is being a little ridiculous and exaggerating his struggles. He plays on a very, very bad team and he looks very, very good. Even though Ekblad was a much better prospect and was much farther along than Day is, Day is still very good. No he doesn't look like one of the best defensemen in the entire CHL at 16, but he doesn't have to. We don't have to badger him because he didn't live up to the hype. He's still a guy who wouldn't look out of place going top five.

If a player is willing to use playing for USA as leverage against Hockey Canada, then I hope they enjoy their time in stars and stripes. Day would have had to go through an extensive process in order to do this however given his lack of American citizenship.

Give him till next year, he's only 16 after all. I agree that he isn't really deserving of the exceptional player moniker that the OHL gave to Ekblad, Tavares, McDavid.
