Hypothetically it would be funny if McDavid and Eichel refused to sign with Edmonton, Arizona and Buffalo. Maybe we wouldn't see these tank battles so often anymore if the best prospects stopped signing with the bad teams.

It wouldn't be sustainable for every top 5 pick to have their rights on sale for two years. It's also doubtful that one or the other would have that much of an impact, as I don't recall it happening very often after the Lindros conflict.

They'd be shaving two years of their money-making off their careers if they had to follow through with their threats. I don't see why a player would look at "what these teams are doing" as a negative. They're looking at what the situation is for them. Does the team offer them a chance for long-term success? If so, that's what they care about.

It's also unfair to say Edmonton is "tanking" if you mean that in the most technical sense. They simply suck and have horrible management. Coyotes likewise are getting nightmare goaltending and had the bottom drop out on them. Buffalo is right where they expected to be more or less (not necessarily 30th, but a bottom team) due to the stage they're in of their rebuild. They're the only team you can really say is "tanking" in that sense, but it's still overselling what's really happening.

And I know you're speaking hypothetically, but it should be mentioned that McDavid has more than once gone out of his way to decry the idea of players refusing to play for a team, whether it be at the juniors or NHL level, so he's the last player who'd do that.

McDavid's whole family are Leaf fans and McDavid stated, just last week, that wearing the blue and white would be a dream come true. No reason for the kid to say it if he didn't mean it.

Are you saying this in direct relation to the comments above or is it a new subject?

McDavid has already publicly said he'll sign wherever he is drafted. I think Eichel has intimated similarly.

The only way Toronto or any other team is going to get McDavid or Eichel for ages 17-25 is to draft them.

Well I guess that settles it, then.

Congratulations, Leaf Nation!

When he was on Ottawa radio, he said the exact same thing. "Playing in Ottawa would be an absolute dream come true." http://www.tsn.ca/radio/ottawa-1200/mcdavid-playing-for-the-sens-would-be-a-dream-come-true-1.155406 [at the 8:10 mark]
He's been trained in handling the media obviously, he gets it.

I really feel Toronto will win the lottery. Normally, I am as pessimistic as it gets about the Leafs but. I think we might see a repeat of the 2007 draft. Chicago was lucky to draft Kane. If the Leafs can secure a top 5 pick, they might just walk away with Mcdavid.

I hope my dream comes true. Not a ****ing franchise needs McDavid more than the Leafs. Instant superstar and he becomes the most hated player in the league in a second.

Yeah, I have that feeling too. Hopefully it happens. We haven't drafted number one since Wendel Clark... It's been way too long and never have we drafted someone of McDavid's generational calibre.

You guys want to know what's even more scary about McDavid more than anything? His size. And you're going to be like, what? Take this in. He's 17. 6'1 (maybe 6 and a half but very close) about 180-185. That means this kid isn't even done growing. Let's say he caps off at 6'3 and anywhere between 200-210. That kind of size with Crosby like skill? That's ridiculous. It's like Crosby's skill set with Ovechkin's frame.

I don't think Toronto needs McDavid as bad as Arizona or even Carolina.

If you're implying this similarity to Crosby, he was hated initially because he would always dive and appeal to the refs as a young player. McDavid doesn't have that fieriness that got Crosby 100 PIMs in his rookie year.

So honestly the only reason I can see people hate McDavid are because of his media overexposure and superstardom that he is destined to reach, which comes with being the best (if not one of) in hockey.

The only reason Arizona would "need" McDavid is for revenue purposes but even then, he's not enough to sustain them. Arizona will always have a problem with attendance and Carolina? Really? They're drafted a bonafide number one centre way more recently than the Leafs and have Jeff Skinner, a recent Calder winner (depends on how you define recent). The Leafs have never drafted a generational type talent, let alone a guy born in Toronto, growing up loving the team and even playing with Cujo's kids when he was younger. If you really want to sell hockey in Arizona, they get Auston Mathews in next years draft as he's on Eichel/McDavid talent tier and is also Arizona born. Carolina I'm still not sold on them being that bad. Semin was a bad contract but they've been marred by injuries and the inconsistent health of Jeff Skinner. They definitely need to rebuild, but nowhere near as much as the Leafs.

When did this become the "leafs are gonna win the lottery" thread? Any discussion on the player himself?

Maybe I just want Arizona to have a star one year earlier, but yeah Matthews would be perfect for them.

He's done growing for the most part. He will not be 6'3 lol

Amigo; he's only 17. Most and I mean MOST men stop growing in any spurts by 21. 2 inches is perfectly in the realm of possibilities. Even 6'2 is fine.

Lol, it's possible he grows another inch or two, but there's no way he'll be as big as Ovechkin. He's got a somewhat slim frame while Ovi is built like a tank. McDavid just won't be heavy for his height, he doesn't have Crosby's generational thighs or Ovi's generational beer belly.

we won't be having these stupid tank battles if the NHL implemented the new draft rules this year. It was planned out last year, and it was suppose to be for the first 5 picks and in 2015, but for whatever reason it's delayed until 2016, with no legit reason why they don't implement it sooner. It be awesome to see these deadbeat franchices. not in their comfort zone such as Buffalo. The feeling of potentially dropping down 5 picks is awesome.

I don't know. I haven't seen Ovechkin out of equipment in person but McDavid is a pretty big kid.
