It's just the way he plays. He has the complete skill set, the vision, the motivation (well, probably the motivation) to improve, the student + winner mentality combination. He has a presence on the ice that few players can match. He always seems to be at the right place, know what to do in any situation, pulls off plays that other players wouldn't, etc. It's not for nothing that he has been highly touted for several years already. He always seems a level (or 3) ahead of his competition. He's just a complete package that, IMO, none of the players since Crosby have had. I know that's not a great explanation, but sometimes you just look at someone play and you know : they have that untouchable aura about them. I don't feel that way about Stamkos or Tavares, no matter how good they are.

I'm not saying he will absolutely dominate the NHL and be as good or better than Crosby. But he has the best chance of anyone that has come between those 2. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he ended up with a better career than Crosby if he can stay healthy and continue his progression in the NHL like Crosby did (besides the injury troubles he has had). Time will tell.

I was pretty close lol

*EDIT : Before anyone says it, yes I am fully aboard the hype train for this guy.

McDavid also has an extra gear that no one else on the ice has. More importantly he knows how and when to use his speed to his advantage. Tavares said he skated with him over the summer and had never seen a player with his explosiveness. Add the skating to his tremendous skill, hockey sense and compete and you have an elite hockey player.

Can someone explain to me why McConnor is expected to be Crosby-level when he joins the NHL, which I guess means 100+ pts rookie season as a 18yo and then a well over 1.2 PPG pace? What makes him different from other highly touted prospects? Or is that just hype and he realistically going to be on the Stamkos-type level and be a steady PPG pace from the start.

Crosby wouldn't have done that if he came into the NHL right now as an 18 year old. 05-07 were the highest scoring years in the last 10 because of the post-lockout penalty rules. Those same rules are what made the Sabres a top team those years.

Why? Because the Leafs are the centre of the Universe?

Sure it would...

No, because Toronto is McDavid's hometown team. Doesn't mean it's going to happen, obviously, but rather that I think most people can agree that it would be a cool thing to see. It would be no different than seeing Patrick Kane in Buffalo. Not going to happen, but still would be neat nonetheless.

Got it. Thought it was the whole self-important Toronto thing but I shouldn't have made assumptions.

It would hold extra weight and significance if the Flames got him, I say. He could play with his old linemates Sam Bennett and Morgan Klimchuk. Plus, I think McDavid would look great in a Flames retro jersey.

It would hold extra weight and significance if the Sabres got him, I say. He's a hockey player and they play hockey there. It's also a city, and it just so happens people live in cities.

If the Flames got him... That'd be amazing. Just imagine Gaudreau and McDavid together. That, or have Bennett on the wing of McDavid.

Bennett - McDavid - RW
Gaudreau - Monahan - RW

Just need those RW's.

But if he is as good as Crosby like some posters are suggesting then he should be in the top 10 in scoring his rookie year with 80~ points. Then lead the league his second year.

80+ points is certainly within his reach as an 18 year old, wouldn't be surprised to see him in the top 10 depending on his linemates. P Kane put up 72 in 07-08 and McDavid is a step or 2 above him as a prospect.

McDavid is currently on a 180 point pace. If he maintains that (doubtful, probably ends between 145 and 160), it would be the best draft eligible season since Mario.

I still don't think he translates as well as Crosby at the NHL level, but thinking McDavid could become better than him is far from a ridiculous opinion to hold given the ability he's shown.

Pretty crazy, if he played the full 68 Games, he'd be on pace for 197.5 points. Oh my.:amazed:

Thats not true, Kane put up 145 his draft year (also his rookie year), Crosby put up 168 (second year).

Crosby also did it in a lower scoring league that year, assuming the OHL keeps up this scoring pace.

So no, not the best since Mario.

*EDIT: My mistake, i thought you meant 140-160 would be the best season since Mario, now I realize you meant the 180, which would be true. I highly doubt he gets close to 180 though. If he does, I would change my tune about him.

Debatable since Crosby was 6 months younger with one less CHL season under is belt when he put up 168 (assuming same amount of games played). I think Crosby's draft eligible is comparable to Mario's all things considered.
