It's just the way he plays. He has the complete skill set, the vision, the motivation (well, probably the motivation) to improve, the student + winner mentality combination. He has a presence on the ice that few players can match. He always seems to be at the right place, know what to do in any situation, pulls off plays that other players wouldn't, etc. It's not for nothing that he has been highly touted for several years already. He always seems a level (or 3) ahead of his competition. He's just a complete package that, IMO, none of the players since Crosby have had. I know that's not a great explanation, but sometimes you just look at someone play and you know : they have that untouchable aura about them. I don't feel that way about Stamkos or Tavares, no matter how good they are.
I'm not saying he will absolutely dominate the NHL and be as good or better than Crosby. But he has the best chance of anyone that has come between those 2. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he ended up with a better career than Crosby if he can stay healthy and continue his progression in the NHL like Crosby did (besides the injury troubles he has had). Time will tell.
I was pretty close lol
*EDIT : Before anyone says it, yes I am fully aboard the hype train for this guy.
McDavid also has an extra gear that no one else on the ice has. More importantly he knows how and when to use his speed to his advantage. Tavares said he skated with him over the summer and had never seen a player with his explosiveness. Add the skating to his tremendous skill, hockey sense and compete and you have an elite hockey player.
