I never believed in Lindros when that hype wheel got going. You can only go so far when your act is based on the physical side of the game. McDavid is a different cat. Real skill. Extraordinary skill.

I remember journalists taking great offense when he got 'downgraded to Messier-like' expectations. Lindros was a great player, but not Gretzky or Lemieux. Furthermore, a big part of his advantage -- size -- was cancelled out in just a few years, as everybody started looking for bigger bodies. I wondered if he didn't incite an arms race that way.

You don't think lindros has extraordinary skill?

Not sure I agree on this one. It's like comparing Lemieux to Gretzky in Mario's early years. Rimouski provided far better support. Gretzky had 5 future Hall of Famers skating around him.

I don't see the comparison at all, and again it's next to impossible to properly quantify that support. Crosby was CHL Player of the Year, so that means he was the best player in the country at 16. He won the scoring race by such a margin that if anything he made his teammates look better (and given how most of them turned out professionally, it's a very fair statement). McDavid, as great a prospect as he is, isn't even leading his own team in scoring. Brown and Burakovsky are pretty damn good support pieces at the junior level and despite Erie's defence, it's not like he's running a one man show.

The only support argument I'd really buy is that McDavid plays in the toughest division in Canada, and by far the best conference in Canada. But the difference between most junior teams in any given year isn't all that much to begin with. He just happens to play in a division and conference with a higher than average distribution of well run teams.

Still, if I'm going to buy into him being a Crosby level prospect, he needs to be leading his team in scoring and standing head and shoulders above the league at 16. Part of what made Crosby such an incredible prospect was his physical maturity, so if McDavid has a lot of catching up to do, that's fair, but it's junior and that doesn't matter as much. It's just another point in Crosby's favour.

I think these scouts might be forgetting just how amazing Crosby was at the same age. McDavid is an absolutely outstanding prospect, I have him as the best prospect SINCE Crosby, but I don't have him as a BETTER prospect than Crosby.

I agree with this, scouts are forgetting how good Crosby was in junior....some will say he had better line mates but Dany Roussin who was Sid's line mate was before Sid, Roussin was NHL drafted as a 7th rounder BUT only scored 38 points in a season but when Crosby came he had over 100 points and was re drafted as a 2nd rounder, then without Crosby he was nothing again...

I have seen both play Midget and Junior hockey live many times each (Crosby a lot more than McDavid since i saw every midget game Crosby ever played but probably saw both of them in junior almost equal about 6 to 7 times each) but Crosby imo is better than McDavid is at that age....but I think McDavid is better than Tavares at that age but not as good as Crosby....McDavid thinks the game on a different level than almost everyone but Crosby was ever better with the way he sees a game. I think in the future, McDavid will be on the same level as Ovechkin but not Crosby.

What really sucks is that it looks like this kid is going to go to one of Philly, New Jersey or Buffalo. If it has to be one of those three I'm hoping New Jersey.

It'd be amazing if they did the expansions they've talked about & sold a franchise in Markham or Quebec to the highest bidder with the sweetener of 1st overall pick to use on McDavid.

Isn't McDavid two drafts away? I think it is pretty premature to make guesses on who will be taking him. A lot can change.

Likely still going to be in the East, so no I don't like those options. I hope Calgary falls apart and gets him next year.

so what's the over/under on the amount of starts every teams back up goalie with be getting next year? I am calling over 30 :sarcasm: :naughty:

Well..Buffalo will have to trade Miller to have a shot at McDavid and I think they will get him for sure.

I hope he goes West but I know that the East teams just suck too much to let that happen.

Someone unepxected will get him ... someone like New Jersey :help:

As you can see I am a Rangers fans... so we already deal with Crosby 6 times a year... now McDavid? I dont know if i will e able to handle it

Even then, Tavares had a pretty insane 16 y/o season. I'd like to see McDavid outperform Tavares first before comparing him to Crosby... Because Tavares actually had a better 15 y/o season than McDavid.

NJD are awful this year, and won't get their lottery pick to help out next year's squad. Barring some great signing in the offseason, it probably isn't too unexpected that NJD would be in the running for McDavid in two years.

I love McDavid's game and think he's got franchise player potential at the NHL level, but this is just a blatant excuse to try and sell copies.

McDavid had a fantastic underage season, but to be on Crosby's level, he'll have to get close to this level of dominance at 16:
-CHL First All-Star Team
-CHL Player of the Year
-CHL Rookie of the Year (McDavid did not win, though he was a year younger)
-CHL Top Scorer Award (135)
-QMJHL All-Rookie Team (McDavid completed for OHL at 15)
-QMJHL First All-Star Team
-QMJHL Most Assists (81)
-QMJHL Most Points "Jean Beliveau Trophy" (135) (Crosby won scoring title by 18!!! points)
-QMJHL Most Valuable Player "Michel Brière Trophy"
-QMJHL Offensive Player of the Year
-QMJHL Rookie of the Year (McDavid won for OHL at 15)
-U20 WJC Silver Medal

McDavid is going to have to heat up from his already incredible scoring pace to really reach Crosby's level of dominance.

He's a Tavares/MacKinnon/Stamkos level prospect for sure, but this headline is pure hyperbole. He's not dominating his peers at 16 like Crosby did, even though he's really, really good.

Coincidence this comes from a pens fan?
Maybe.

McDavid is as good as Crosby was, and in a much tougher league.

I bet you just watched tons of Q games back then didn't you?

Man, people seriously need to stop using this as an excuse. Crosby was 37 points clear of everyone else in the league not on his line, and that was a 19 year old Max Talbot. Regardless of league strength, he was head and shoulders better than some top tier prospects who were much older.

McDavid is definitely in Crosby's tier, but better? Lets wait and see how the rest of the season goes.

You don't think lindros has extraordinary skill?
Depends how you define it. Extraordinary is still somewhat a relative term. If Lindros is extraordinary, Lemieux and Gretzky are super extraordinary. Either way, he didn't quite hit the level he was hyped at.

As for this McDavid kid, haven't seen him play but i hope he is as good as Crosby. It would be great if he was even better actually. Watching players at that level is special.

Crosby was the CHL player of the year... As a 16 and 17 years old... With most player out of the 2003 draft aka one of the best draft ever playing their 18-19 y/o seasons.

Amazing thing is that Barzal is also available

it's more like Crosby Malkin instead of Crosby Ryan

Exactly, but if there are any teams that deserve a talent like him, it's one of Calgary, Nashville, Phoenix, Buffalo or Winnipeg.
