I then you lose the lottery to a good team on a down year

Or be like Philly...finish dead last BY A MILE...then lose the lottery to Chicago. Philly gets JVR while Chicago gets P.Kane. Then a few years later Kane scores the Cup winning goal against Philly...while JVR is -2 in the game :(

Sportsnet Magazine: "Scouts say Connor McDavid better than Crosby..."

"The best prospect in a generation."

"It might just be we'll be talking about how dominant no. 87 was until no. 97 came along."

U18's - "Probably the best performance ever by a player at the u18's."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now that's some pretty high praise and expectations thrown at the kid. I know we have a McDavid thread, but figured this would open up some lively discussions.

It's hard to imagine a player in today's NHL that could possibly dominate more than Crosby does, but this has me intrigued. Then again, Ryan Leaf was supposed to be better than Peyton Manning...

They just haven't seen my fat ass yet :naughty:

In all seriousness: Way too much hype, way too early. Not saying McDavid is a bad or anything, but Crosby is just out of this world. I don't like him, but if healthy he makes all the other players in the NHL look like amateurs.

Here the image of the magazine:

Well to be fair, 66 points in 62 games as a 15 yr old OHL rookie is pretty ridiculous.

The same thing was said about Crosby when he was a kid, except he was compared to Lemieux or Lindros or whoever. I McDavid pans out, would be great for the game.

Best performance at U18 WC's as double underager maybe. Best U18 performance ever? Not a chance. He was quite invisible at the playoff round.

It's not too much hype to anyone who has seen this kid play.

He has all the elite tools to be a guy like Crosby, it's up to him whether or not he wants to work his ass off to develop those into a dominating skillset in the NHL. Whether he's better than Crosby or not is going to be an endless debate that has no right or wrong answer because it's impossible to compare kids 8 years apart but he has everything to be a Crosby level force in the NHL.

Looking forward to the day he steps on an NHL ice surface.

Combination of actually being the best prospect since crosby and trying to sell copies. If he wins chl player of the year then we can make a legitimate case. Until then its still a bit premature.

Connor McDavid is off the charts incredible. Points aside, he has a silky smooth puck control that is incredible to watch. Only time will tell if he can surpass Crosby but he has the potential to be a generation talent.

So is 45 goals / 77 points in 65 games. Is he as good as Crosby?

Well, Tavares was unreal in juniors and had a lot of hype surrounding him too. He's turned out to be a phenomenal player with a lot of years ahead.

Tavares also didn't have the skating ability McDavid possesses, nor the playmaking ability.

I love McDavid's game and think he's got franchise player potential at the NHL level, but this is just a blatant excuse to try and sell copies.

McDavid had a fantastic underage season, but to be on Crosby's level, he'll have to get close to this level of dominance at 16:
-CHL First All-Star Team
-CHL Player of the Year
-CHL Rookie of the Year (McDavid did not win, though he was a year younger)
-CHL Top Scorer Award (135)
-QMJHL All-Rookie Team (McDavid completed for OHL at 15)
-QMJHL First All-Star Team
-QMJHL Most Assists (81)
-QMJHL Most Points "Jean Beliveau Trophy" (135) (Crosby won scoring title by 18!!! points)
-QMJHL Most Valuable Player "Michel Brière Trophy"
-QMJHL Offensive Player of the Year
-QMJHL Rookie of the Year (McDavid won for OHL at 15)
-U20 WJC Silver Medal

McDavid is going to have to heat up from his already incredible scoring pace to really reach Crosby's level of dominance.

He's a Tavares/MacKinnon/Stamkos level prospect for sure, but this headline is pure hyperbole. He's not dominating his peers at 16 like Crosby did, even though he's really, really good.

I'm buying the hype on this one. From what I've watched of McDavid, he has the speed, power, dangles, and balance that Crosby has, but he also has a vision of the ice similar to Gretzky.

I'm hyped for McDavid and just hope he goes to a team the Flyers won't ever have to face in a meaningful game.

To me, he's in the middle right now. Not as good as Crosby, but a better prospect then Tavares/Stamkos/MacKinnon were.

Well, we shall see. Not saying Sutter will agree, but I think he has to be used in a Top 6 starring role in the up coming World Juniors, if he can pull off that bit of magic, something which at 16 Crosby did not do, then these sorts of proclamations will only grow stronger. Of course that 2005 team was theeeeee most talented and dominate team in the history of that tournament. (arguably)

And of course the 2014 team is nowhere close to the 2005 team.

He's also not in the Q in 2003, he's in the OHL in 2013. Massive difference in quality of players they're playing against. He's on pace for over 100 points this season and he started slow, he's only going to get better.
