Not pointing to anyone specifically, but I find it comical how some people like to downplay McDavid by comparing him to Tavares.

Tavares is arguably a top 5 forward in the entire league as a 23 year old. If McDavid becomes that, his pick will be a smashing success.

IIRC Tavares turned 15 the September of his first season whereas McDavid turned 15 the January previous to his first season, making him about 8 months older than Tavares.

What must also be noted IMO, is that at 14 years old, John Tavares wasn't much smaller than he is now (mature body)....I've seen 11 year olds with more muscle mass than McDavid.

Why are you checking out 11 year olds?

I don't really see anyone doing that. For myself, I was just answering the guy's question. It's not really relevant to compare the two because playing in the CHL at 15 is such a rare thing that comparing the few guys who've done it is silly.

How McDavid looks throughout the season amongst his actual peers is what matters. He's not off to a blazing start, but that's hardly a knock against him in my book.

Is this kid the next generational talent? I don't know much about this kid since I'm in the US but have seen him on some news outlets, similar to Crosby.

I heard this guy was learning to raise the puck, any truth to that? I also heard he may be a top 200 pick in 2015.

I think the discussion is more about being the best since Crosby as opposed to being the next Crosby.

I think we should give it 20-30 games before making any sort of judgement on McDavid. However I do think that for him to be considered a Tavares-level prospect, let alone Crosby, he absolutely needs to light it up this season. Crosby, as a 16 year old 6 months older than McDavid (last year), lead the entire CHL in scoring. Tavares got 134 points in his 16 year old season. McDavid goes into this season 6 months older than Crosby when he started that season.

Now I understand that points aren't everything, and that Erie is a bad team, and the OHL is lower scoring, and whatnot. But I definitely think McDavid needs to have at the very least a 100 point season this year to justify the hype.

The consensus for pretty much the entire last year has been that he is in between Tavares and Crosby as a prospect. I've seen more than a few people say he is closer to Crosby than Tavares. And I think this is the season he needs to prove that he's worth that praise.

I've only seen him play a handful of times but he looks like a slightly better Duchene to me...

And this is why he is overrated.

Crosby
OV
Stamkos
Malkin

Tavares/Toews/Datsyuk is the next grouping for me, so ya he is arguably a top five forward imo.

McDavid may end up somewhere between a Tavares - MacKinnon type of prospect, which is still very very good.

I love HFboards if only to see the evolution of prospects hype-trains'. It wasn't too long ago McDavid was seen as the "next Crosby"... Now people are trying to justify that being a slightly inferior prospect than Tavares is still "pretty good".

Considering the hype he had, that's pretty funny.

i'm definetly sure that if he is drafted by the leafs or the habs, McDonald might create a special McDavid burger in canada lol

So you don't remember Tavavers hype before CHL or his play in the CHL or his play in the NHL? Or I just couldn't see how bad Tavares is maybe?

A guy name the next Tavares ... such a disapointement!!
