Rewatching the Billy Moores Cup, McDavid just has unbelievable skill. Really extreme.
I'm almost as excited to watch this kid in October as much as my own team.
I feel like Cartman on that episode of Southpark when he wanted to freeze himself for a couple of months until that video game came out.

This is how fans should enjoy generational talents.

Not whining and hating on the kid.

Sorry for asking this without reading all the posts in this thread because I'm sure it's been addressed but I am a bit strapped for time -- how good is this kid supposed to be defensively? After watching him in that Oilers development camp scrimmage, he was obviously great offensively but not very spectacular in his own end. And that was against Oilers prospects and undrafted invites so I wonder how he's going to be against real NHL players? I mean I'm sure he'll obviously improve in that area a lot as he gets going in his career but for all the hype about how he's going to sweep all the trophies during his first NHL season or whatever, I was expecting him to be a bit better defensively.

Then again, I realize it was just some scrimmage and he maybe wasn't trying that hard. I haven't seen much of his play otherwise, so that's why I'm asking.

He's rather Mediocre there IMO.

No reason to expect him not to improve it drastically though due to his hockey IQ

that scrimmage was like half speed and it was pretty evident that no forwards were going hard on the back check

in drills, his speed and stick checking ability had him winning the back check battle every time in 1 on 1s

As you will soon find out he's got that covered.

He can do it in junior, sure. Doing it consistently in the NHL is much tougher. Way less time and space.

I don't think he'll struggle with it, but its one of the only question marks surrounding his transition.

I don't mind the criticisms of Hall's hockey IQ. He constantly forces plays that aren't there. Where I have hope regarding this issue is his performance at the World Championships this year. I saw a much more responsible Hall when it came to puck handling (Eberle too), where he used his speed on give and goes/cycles and waited for the open ice instead of trying to manufacture it singlehandedly. McLellan clearly got through to him.

I really believe McLellan may put McDavid between Hall and Eberle. I'm sure people will question the grit and defensive abilities, but its pretty tough to give up a goal if the opposition can't get the puck away from you. If Hall and Eberle play the same refined game they did at the WC, coupled with McDavid's insane creativity and vision, they'll do just fine.

If you wanna know why Oilers fans are so high on Darnell Nurse, go to 14:10 of the video to see how he handles McDavid.
I like Nurse a lot too, I think he's going to be a very good NHL dman, but I wouldn't read too much into that clip. That's a drill that really favours big/strong players, and it's also a reasonably easy situation for a defender in general. For example, McDavid isn't particularly strong defensively, and is clearly physically outmatched against Nurse in a drill like this that forces strength battles, and he still shuts down Nurse pretty easily when the roles are switched (Nurse with the puck, McDavid checking him).

That was impressive on Nurses part. Watched some more of the video, is it just me or is McDavid going to have to build some strength. Looked like he was getting knocked off the puck pretty easily, considering they are young prospects. Bigger Dmen in tbe league shouldn't have a problem of they can contain him. Unbiased real question ? Does he have to build more strength on the puck, could it be a problem playing the bigger guys in the west ?

He's 18, a lot of those prospects are significantly older/stronger. There were a lot of strength battles there too, where he doesn't get to truly use some of his best assets (deadly open ice play, speed, elusiveness).

I actually think he's quite a bit stronger than most "18 year old, 6ish foot, elite skill forward prospects." He'll get knocked around a bit like all 18 year olds in the NHL, but I think he's going to be great in year 1, and will only get better with age.

For me his worst case scenario is Hawerchuk and his best case is a poor mans Gretzky.
holy **** a worse case scenario of dale hawerchuck is really high, i doubt mcdavid ends up being a lot better than him statistically, a poor mans gretzky wont happen, I think his best case scenario is a slightly better crosby

Just found a new McDavid video. Pay particular attention to the no-look, between the legs, backhanded pass from behind the net at 3:01. Absolutely filthy.

A lot of the same plays that's been shown many times, but still, a good video.

It's pretty bad when I can tell the exact scoring play after a fraction of a second in these videos. I must have watched him score the same goal vs Plymouth over 100 times. You'd think it would get old . . .
