But...you didn't get that player 9th overall. You got Bo Horvat, OHL player. Let's sloooow down a bit.

I'm okay with this. I'm very happy that the Flames got Toews v2.0, a PPG selke-level centre with so many intangibles that they actually became tangible, at 6th overall in that draft.

Lol. Apparently whenever the Canucks get a top10 pick they draft a future captain.

The scouting report on Horvat predraft was that he has natural leadership qualities and is possible future Captain material.

It's not so much of Canucks fans being delusional about draft picks, its more like that's the type of player Gillis likes to target...

He his playing well and looks like a good pick thus far. Let's settle down a bit though, no guarantee he even makes (or stays with) the team next year.

Hopefully he keeps progressing, and working on what he needs to improve upon (ie skating).

The taped on C was stripped from Hodgson, and will now be divided among Gaunce, Kassian, Horvat and Shinkaruk!

I don't question whether or not Bo shows qualities that would make him a good captain. It is entirely delusional to assume he is going to be captain in 5 years. He just got drafted 6 months ago. He hasn't has a single pro game yet. There are other players on the Canucks that very well could be captain at that time: Hamhuis, Garrison, Kesler. Bo could get injured. He could get traded. He could completely bust.

In this case I would agree that he will wear a 'C' before his NHL career is done. Bo is a leader and one of my fave players both on and off the ice. Apple doesn't fall far from the tree, his father is a great guy, always takes the time to say hello and is refreshingly honest about his sons game. As an example, he agreed that Bo took a few games to get his game going when he returned from NHL camp.

Younger Horvat is an OHL Draft prospect this year. Decent player.

Bo is a very good leader and a nice person. You couldn't go wrong with him as a captain. Doesn't mean you couldn't do better though.

Remember the hype machine around Cody Hodgson? It will be like that for Bo too. No doubt about it.

Bo deserves it. Kid will have a similar impact for the Nucks as O'Reilly does for the Avalanche. Really not sure about Bergeron comparisons, but he's going to be an awesome player at the NHL level.

Shinkaruk, however, doesn't deserve nearly as much hype as he is getting. Would be surprised if he ends up a top 6 winger.

I am going to assume you came up with that conclusion over his points total.... I sure wish he knew how to put up the points playing with a hip injury. Should take notes from Kesler.

Lets not make excuses, he has regressed so far. Hip injury or not, if you watch him play he has not improved this year as much as we would have liked.

Nevertheless I hope that he can pull things around in the second half of the season. Hopefully he makes the Junior team and gets his confidence level back.

Why is that? Much greater chance that Kesler becomes our captain than Horvat. I heard that Guance was supposed to be our next captain when we drafted him.

I'd rather have Bieksa be our Captain to be honest, Kesler's a mean bumholio

How is an injury making excuses? If you seriously think he is going to put up the points while he is playing with a hip injury then you have some sky expectations. He played 2 or 3 games with the hip injury (not sure how many he played before he went out with the hip injury), and before that he was at 1+ ppg. He did have a solid start to the season, then dropped after the injury came. The kid can't catch a break, he even said himself that he was in pain while he was playing.

this makes no sense.. being injured is definitely a valid excuse. how the **** are you supposed to improve when you're injured?

Getzlaf is arguably the most dominant player in the game when he is on, right up there with Malkin, Ovi, Datsyuk and Crosby. I've got sky high expectations for Bo! but he'll never produce assists and points over PPG like Getz because Getz is one of the best passers in the game.

I said it before and I'll say it again, Horvat's high ceiling point is a guy like Toews, and I honestly think he has a solid chance at hitting that and producing at a similar rate and in a comparable fashion to Toews if he can maintain progression. He's got a higher offensive ceiling than a guy like Bergeron, but Bergeron and O'Reilly are offensive comparables a notch down from Toews he could end up like too if he doesn't hit his ceiling.

Regardless, that caliber of offense (60-82 points), to go with elite defensive presence and outstanding face off ability, leadership qualities as well, clutch scoring ability... And to get that player at 9th overall... Amazing.

So, you expect a physically dominant point per game player that should win Selke trophies. In short, you feel they’ve drafted a perennial Hart trophy candidate. At 9th overall.

I think you might want to temper your expectations a little. He hasn’t shown that he can be top 10 in scoring in the OHL yet, and you’re projecting him to be what would roughly be a top 10 NHL scorer. Do you realize the odds of that happening? 1 in 1000 maybe?

I suggested that is his top end upside, not the likely outcome. He's much more likely to produce offence at a clip comparable to O'Reilly or Bergeron.

Expectations are for a well rounded, reliable center who has strong intangibles (leadership, ability to rise to the occasion in big games) and can produce offence in the 55-65pt range, who's game translates well into playoff success. Surround him with offensive talent and there is higher upside in terms of his scoring output in my opinion though.

Well factoring in games missed due to NHL camp, Horvat would have been around 6-8 in OHL scoring prior to leaving for WJC camp so your first point is sorta bunk.

Pretty sure the previous poster gave a range of 60-82 points, so why you translated that as "top 10 NHL scorer" is a bit puzzling. 60-82 pts is basically the range for a top 30 C in the NHL, not a top 10. But hey why not focus on the "82" just to be a **** rather than the total range of 60-82 right?

48 points was good for 13th in NHL scoring last season. The year before, 82 points was good for 6th in scoring. It's pretty rare. The three players that year that did it, Giroux, Spezza, and Stamkos, all broke 100 points in the CHL prior to even being drafted. From last year, the only two that didn't were Eric Staal, who topped out at 98 points, and Getzlaf.... I'm just saying, let's not start putting unrealistic expectations on the kid. 82 is most likely out of the realm of possibility.

... You do know it was a lock out season right??
