Matthews does remind me of Crosby in the sense of where he sets up, and where he will thrive which is on the boards and next to the net.

Matthews at side of the net and half boards, Rielly and Marner on the point, Stammer on the left side for the one timer, JVR in front of the net. :amazed:

Just heard a little bit of Dreger's interview with Matthews that's going to be released later today. He has spoken to Mark Hunter and Lou and seems like he's really excited to potentially be a Leaf.

He looks really good. Under Babcock, its almost scary how good this kid could be.

Agreed. For me I'm excited what Babcock could get out of him. I don't think he's had a big, strong center of Matthews caliber before. I mean when I thought of Babcock and Nylander, I thought it was awesome that he'd be able to transfer some of those Datsyuk tendencies onto Willy. I bet you Babs is excited to see what he can get out of Matthews

It's pretty cool too, because he came to us at the perfect time. He's exactly the type of player the Leafs needed at this point. After year one of the rebuild, the Leafs get the perfect piece (a big, complete franchise centre prospect) to build a team around. It couldn't have happened at a better time.

Honestly, everything has been perfect since Shanny came along. Offloaded our bad contracts. Had an incredible draft. Nylander progressed as expected. Zaitsev signed. Babcock signed. Won the draft lottery. I remember hearing O'Neill talking about Shanny on Overdrive one night and saying that Shanny always seemed to be a guy where things just happened the right way for him, even as a player. With what's going on now, I think he's planned everything out so extensively. I think his plan included us winning the draft lottery this year. I honestly have zero doubt that if the Leafs want Vesey and Stamkos come the offseason, then we'll have both of them too

The luck factor is new, but definitely welcomed.

So much of the Leafs future depended on if they could get that stud center down the middle.

Even though picks 2-7 all are great prospects, they aren't #1 centers, and thus, the void would still be there.

When you consider just how lucky the Leafs were to have won the draft lottery, you can't help but feel like everything from this point on is just gravy lol. Started the night with an 80% chance of missing out on Matthews, that number jumped to a 91% of missing out on Matthews after the 1st three balls...

I know this is slightly premature, I think we can expect it by the end of june

It's gonna be amazing to watch a young core come together all at the same time. Matthews, Nylander,Marner are all nhl ready and are all elite prospects. Throw in Rielly,Gardiner,Kadri and others and it's a hell of a time to be a Leafs fan. I've never seen this in my 25 years as a leafs fan. All we ever had was a good but much older core (the last time this team was a true contender).

Pretty dominant game today from Auston. He was all over the ice, showing off his ability to shield the puck, showing off his sweet hands (couple of toe drags, flipping the puck, etc). Though he only notched 1 assist, the shift in which he did so was so dominant. Skated circles around the French defenders and then dished it to an open Murphy who sniped it home.

Yeah, this Matthews kid is a very good hockey player. Leafs are getting a good one.

You can tell by the interviews that he is incredibly focused and knows exactly what he has to do to get better and win. Very few players at that age are able to dissect exactly what is going wrong when things aren't going well and he just knows what needs to be better and goes after it.

I agree. His ability to hold on to the puck and play at high speeds is very impressive. Can't go wrong with him. :)

He's the clear #1. Viewing him more, it's a no brainer for the Leafs to take him. The kid is very special.

Jets will get a good one in Laine. Hopefully Pulju goes #4 to EDM :yo:.
