Crosby has other things combined with it that have made him an All Time great/Generational player, like his playmaking.

But the way Matthews comes down the ice on the rush and gets goals in the slot/near the crease reminds me of Crosby.

Again, not as good as Crosby obviously. But that part of their games strike me as similar.

I really don't see Matthews as a goal scorer despite his impressive numbers this year. I think he's going to be more of a playmaker in the NHL.

Head-to-head with Laine I thought Matthews looked like the better player today. Laine also got benched for the last 6 minutes or so as the Fins defended a one goal lead.

Matthews release and shot is top notch. He also has a knack for going to the net. No he is not a pure goal scorer (those are extremely rare), but he is a goal scorer. Just say Matthews scores 80 points per season, no doubt about 30-40 are goals. That's a goal scorer.

Was a really good game to watch. Matthews started off pretty strong but faded as the game went on in my opinion, largely in part to Barkov heating up. Laine looked pretty dangerous on the PP as usual, but other than that was pretty quiet. Overall not their best games, but the competition was much tougher today so it's hard to expect two 18 year olds to have a big impact.

EDIT: Wrong thread, sorry. Thought this was Matthews vs. Laine.

Really?
I see him as a player whos going to be really good at both.

This kids gonna be good... actually not even good, he's going to be great. He is such an intelligent hockey player. From watching his ability to read plays, stay in the right position on the defensive side of the puck and obviously produce offensively. Really is a stud for being 18 years old and being that good at so many aspects of the game. What sticks out for me as everyone is hosting a Laine party in every other hockey thread on the internet is the fact that team USA is young and honestly not the best of teams. The US has played Finland and Canada already who are clearly the two best teams from this division. The US has 9 goals for (Matthews has 4 points) and 11 goals against. This means they have their easiest games remaining therefore insinuating they should be able to win, and potentially dominate the rest of the competition. I am a Canadian but am extremely excited to see the youthful americans (without Eichel as well) being able to compete and do well against all the tougher teams. All I know is watching this tournament has reaffirmed my beliefs that Matthews is going to be a Maple Leaf and that makes me very very happy!

Have you seen the guys wrist shot? It's already one of the best in the entire NHL and will only get better. And he has a nose for the net, AND he's a north south player. He's got elite NHL goal scorer written all over him. That nose for the net and laser wrist shot can translate to 30-40+ goals in the NHL a year when he's in his prime.

Crawford said he's a shooting centre, will lead your team in shots on net. I think playing with Schroeder and Vatrano/Maroon hasn't allowed him to take more chances goal-scoring wise.

Looks as tall if not taller than Hanifin who is listed at 6'3". He's probably 6'3" right now but we'll see at the combine.

I'd guess something like 6'2 and a half and 205 ish. He does look noticeably big out there so maybe I'm shortchanging him.

He likes to have the puck and he likes to shoot and he has one hell of a shot. I think he'll do whatever is necessary with no preference either way.

If Marner pans out I could see Matthews being the primary goal scorer on that line.

One thing I really like that was displayed nicely today is that when he gains the zone on the rush, he immediately moves the puck to an open winger and makes a bee line for the front of the net, using his big body to battle and screen the goalie. He doesn't float around the blue line admiring his pass, he gets to work immediately. Really nice to see from a young player.

Agreed, he excels at alot of the little things. Overlooked but telling details. He looked like a vet out there.

Yeah, I do think they need to make their own ROR trade this summer.

See, i just don't think the leafs are at that point, to start giving up assets, too early. the organization needs to see what they've got coming through the pipeline. and i know this has been beaten to death, but its why a lot of leaf fans would love to see the team acquire stamkos. it would be an ROR-esque shot of young NHL proven talent added to the roster, without losing assets.

to stay on topic, im really enjoying what im seeing in this kid. i have trust in leafs management in who they'll pick, but i hope its matthews, his style of play is exactly what this team needs. An 18 year old Centre thrown out in tough match ups. against players that have played in upper echelon leagues including the NHL, and pefroming, not only offensively, but defensively aswell. Great defensively for his age. its impressive.

They have similar traits, in the fact they have no-weaknesses, they are both extremely strong on their skates, hard workers and are amazing in either a cycling game or breaking out. The two things that dramatically separate are Crosby's all-time great vision and passing, Matthews is a good playmaker, but no where near Crosby. I'd also say Crosby has all the similar strengths Matthews has but is more explosive and is more agile, which makes him elite.

I'm really intrigued by Matthews rookie year, as while he is on the same talent level as guys like Tavares, Stamkos and Eichel, I wouldn't be surprised if he is more NHL ready than all of them due to the unique approach he took to develop. Eichel, Tavares and Stamkos were coming out of either Jr. or the NCAA. While many high-end euro's do the same thing, many of them have to also adapt to small ice, which shouldn't be a problem for Matthews. Not saying he will do it, but I wouldn't be surprised if he slightly outproduced those guys rookie years, but at the end having a similar ceiling.

Stamkos would be our version of the ROR basically. Giving up cap space long-term instead of player and pick assets. I think it is a very good idea to do so. With all the talent coming in we need someone who can be the face of everything as the team grows and develops together. I don't think he should get the C right away but maybe part way into the year or something. He'd be a vet at age 26.

Yeah, Stamkos is the play in this regard. I can't think of an RFA versatile center in the mould of ROR that is worth giving up assets for.
