With the signing of Kovy long term, is there room for Casey to develop and grow into an NHL role?
Seems Nemec despite his rocky play is also ahead of him on the depth chart.
With Hughes already in place to take the #1 offensive role from Hamilton, how does Casey get his chance in NJD?
the stats say he has done some good, has he been a liability otherwise though?
Casey is a little raw defensively like any young D but he's better than Nemec at practically everything I'd say. Even looks more physical which is sad for Nemec. With the signing of Kovy long term, is there room for Casey to develop and grow into an NHL role?

I think Hamilton is gone within 16 months, very possibly at this draft. Nemec or Casey is going to be traded this offseason to improve the forwards. Kovacevic signing basically ensures it. Casey will find his way to the NHL, hopefully on NJ, he's too talented. Luke Hughes will be given every opportunity to be on PP1 for NJ for sure though, if that's what you're wondering and this is a fantasy hockey question. With the signing of Kovy long term, is there room for Casey to develop and grow into an NHL role?

I think the plan is to move Nemec in the offseason, let Casey develop another year in Utica and then the following offseason if Casey is ready to trade Dougie and open up a slot for Casey. With the signing of Kovy long term, is there room for Casey to develop and grow into an NHL role?

I think what's happening now is some fact finding and testing on Nemec to see if he can grow under pressure. Otherwise, he's gone for help up front. Plus, I don't see how they can do anything significant with the forwards unless Dougie is gone.
That last part is why I just bite the bullet and move Dougie this summer. Accept the hit to offense on the backend if you can just significantly improve the actual forward group that has withered away. Especially when Dougie’s already a 3rd pair guy and Luke can easily replace him on PP1. It’s just not worth it to keep him around for the money he’s making when you have replacements in house.
Casey is not Dougie and won’t be as good next year. Casey in the lineup in the 22-23 Sevo role and 9 mil being used to improve the forwards instead though is soooooo much more valuable to this team than keeping Dougie around.
Like maybe if can dump Palat you can do a decent enough job at improving the forwards. Idk if you can dump Palat though. If you can’t then it’s yet another year of the forward group likely being dead in the water. Hell even if we do it I’m not sure the forward group will be great. Still feel it might end up lacking because you’ll be spending around THIRTY FIVE MIL on the defense. Move on from both Dougie/Palat and you could end up having like 20 mil this summer to put to use on building a Monster forward group that has an elite top 6 and elite depth. If the cost of making the forward group that good is replacing Dougie with Casey then so f***ing be it.
Moving Hamilton makes the most sense. If Nemec hasn't totally shit the bed Id think more people would be on board with this. I'd much rather have a 8 or 9 mil forward who can produce than 9 mil Hamilton who is very clearly on the decline and slow AF.I agree with this. No, Casey cannot replace what Dougie does offensively. Not many can.
However,
- Dougie makes $9 million/year whereas Casey makes ~1/10th of that. Would you rather have Dougie and a league minimum forward or Casey and another high-paid forward? I know my answer. Especially when you have guys on the roster like Luke who can QB a PP and will also soon be highly paid himself.
- Dougie is averaging the 5th most ATOI at 5 on 5 this year among DMen, barely above Dillon for 6th. Like you said, that is 3rd pairing minutes. Yes he plays a ton on the PP, but the point remains.
