I don't think he dominated, either. I didn't say he did. At times he did dictate play, though. What I specifically mentioned was his assist. The person I quoted said his points weren't "nice". That assist was nice.
Well it's nice if you're comparing Matthews to a guy like me, but otherwise I don't think the pass was "special." Yeah it was a nice saucer pass, don't think it's too difficult for many NHL players to make that pass.

Matthews isn't a flashy player by any means. People might think they're going to see a guy with this hype skate circles around everyone else but that's just not going to be the case. That's not his game at all. I thought he was quietly effective all game. Probably a pretty big adjustment period to go from playing organized hockey against men to playing pure north/south junior hockey. He'll get better as the tournament goes on.

Kid oozes two-way talent. He easily looked like one of the larger guys out there too. Like a tank. Has a tonne of potential.

Definitely got better as the game went on. And I agree with the above, he doesn't seem to impose his will on games in the same manner as Eichel. But could very well be as effective by letting things happen more organically. He and Strome could be deadly in Arizona together, I'd sure love to see that happen.

You always have such complimentary things to say about the top US prospect every year

It honestly looks like this kid thinks the game at a much higher level than his peers, and would benefit playing with a winger who could really mentally keep up with his IQ with the puck.
This kid is an absolute beauty.

Leaf please? Just once? Please? Lol

draft eligible players pretty much never dominate this tournament. i thought matthews started slowly but was the best player on the ice after the canada 5 minute PP.

I think that's starting to change as more youngsters end up playing earlier in the NHL.

I was at the spot and I can tella you this kid can play some hockey. In the league of his own in the game. Slows the game down as if; that maturity and vision combined with excellent stickhandling - so elegant stylish player.

NHL comparison stylistically? Kopitar? I've never watched Matthews. Who would you say? Based off style not potential.

I didn't think he was that good. His two points weren't nice but still count, I thought Eichel looked better when he was 17 in Sweden than Matthews so far. Just a first impression though, he has a whole tournament to go.

I think it is very likely Mathews this year will have more points than Eichel did in his 2 years at the WJC combined. He does not have the explosive feel Eichel did, granted, but he seems so much more in control and thinking the game a step ahead that I can see him being a better pro than Eichel. Point wise will be roughly equivalent, maybe a few behind, but the rest of his game seems several steps ahead at this point.

He reminded me of Patrick Marleau in that game yesterday. Didn't stand out enormously but had 2 points at the end of things. Fantastic prospect...I can't believe how big the guy is already. He's a tank

similar appearance in their stride and handling of the puck when skating though. matthews has apparently made big strides in his skating the last year or 2.

Not surprising that is a work in progress, he broke his leg when he was 16 I believe...

So he lost some development time in terms of skating.

Thought Matthews looked great yesterday, kind of what you would expect out of somebody doing so well in a pro league, he just looks a little ahead of his peers.

Patrik Laine play more like Malkin. i would compare Matthews to Jaime Benn in terms of size and skill.
but neither of these players would want be compared to that, they all want to be different or their own player.
