Yeah, I wanted to be more definitive, but I also didn't want to derail the thread. I know there's at least one poster on the Leafs board that would vehemently disagree with the assertion that Chychrun is the superior prospect.

Whatever the case, I think 2016 looks like a pretty good draft at the top with Matthews, Puljujarvi, Chychrun, and Sokolov, as well as guys like Grundstrom, Asplund, Brown, Jones, Tkachuk, etc.

It will be exciting to follow. The hockey world is on a pretty damn strong run of talent in recent drafts. I'd say Laine should be thrown into that mix as well so long as he continues to trend back into form.

The interesting dynamic here is that even if Chychrun stays on this trajectory he could still wind up not going 1st because he's a defenseman and because there are considerable forward talents such as Mathews.

Defenseman are just so rarely taken over comparable forwards that Id be surprised if he goes one overall

Matt Tkachuk
Logan Brown
Kieffer Bellows
Nick Pastujov
Ryan Lindgren

Impressive talent coming from the States next year.

I wonder how this list of players will look in 10 years time.

From what I saw at the WJC he reminds me a bit of Jamie Benn. Great hands, stop and start skater, good but not exceptional speed, good vision, strong and physical.

Gonna look great in Blue and White. Him and Stamkos will be a dynamite 1-2 centre punch.

Has anyone seen him in the U18 tourny? How's he looked? He's tied with Barzal for points right now which is pretty impressive.

I can see the Canucks having a fire sale of their core with Matthews in mind. A rebuild might be in their very near future.

No way Vancouver trades off enough of their core to be in Matthews contention barring a lucky lottery win. Vancouver isn't going to be bottom 5 without trading all of: Sedins, Hamhuis, and both goalies. I seriously doubt that they even trade the Sedins as I think they'll want to retire Canucks.

As for the Leafs, I hope the lottery balls fall in our favour in '16 as Matthews should go unchallenged as the #1OA given how fantastic he's been in his pre-draft year. Leafs could easily be one of the worst (or even the worst) team in the NHL depending how many players they trade away. The 3 lotteries could really help the Leafs (possible if they're not bottom 3) or hurt them (possible if they are bottom 3).
