Not sure NCAA is best route. Sure its a better league than CHL with older players, but you run the risk of being trapped behind seniors and putting up less points

If you go to the CHL you get to play way more games as the go to guy against lesser opposition. Way better chance to showcase

Doesn't the USNTDP team play U.S. college teams? There's no reason to think Mathews won't come in and be one of the best players on his team if he went NCAA.

The U18s played 16 games against NCAA teams, including four teams playing in the NCAA tournament, beating Miami and tying Providence.

Hearing that Matthews is not accelerating his education, which pretty much means he's headed to the WHL.

He absolutely embarrassed the Gophers, regardless of how much of a mess they were then.

Where did you hear that? In that article quoted on the last page:

"Auston Matthews, a dynamic center projected by some to be the first overall pick in the 2016 NHL draft, is accelerating his academics at the U.S. National Team Developmental Program with an eye toward being eligible for college in 2015-16."

He is pretty much the clear cut number 1 for the 2016 draft. I think Dmitry Sokolov could give him some real competition though.

We shall see what happens :)

I don't think he's the clear cut number 1, while I do think he's the best prospect at the moment, Jakob Chychrun and Jesse Puljujarvi could give him a run for his money. Along with Sokolov.

It was the same thing if I said that Puljujarvi is "the clear cut number 1 for the 2016 draft". To me, Matthews is not above Puljujarvi and Puljujarvi is not above Matthews and there's still 15 months for these kids to develop, and it's only the next year that matters to the order where each player gets drafted, so that's what makes your comment complete nonsense.

well to be fair, I have heard Bobby Mac, Craig Button and others say Matthews is "clear cut" #1 right now...Bobby Mac called him a generational talent as well just a few days ago when I was watching the NHL Network...

a long way to go until the draft, and players always rise and fall, but as it stands Matthews is #1 in almost everyone's eyes.

Since I doubt the Leafs get him (Especially since we're getting McDavid :sarcasm: ), I'd love to see this guy end up in Arizona, it'd be great for them to see them get their hometown kid.

As a die hard Raptors fan I can kind of relate to how badly you'd want him, after seeing Toronto Born Andrew Wiggins come into the NBA, I wanted him on the Raptors more than anything.

This kid is insanely good.

Eichel 2013-14
U.S. National U18 Team 87 points in 53 games

Matthews 2014-15
U.S. National U18 Team 90 points in 49 games

That's really impressive, I'm hoping this is a sign that the US is beginning to produce high-end centers.

Add in last year's second-line U18 center Dylan Larkin. 56 points in 60 games and 47 this year as a Michigan freshman.

Next in the line is BU commit Clayton Keller. 59 points in 45 U17 games plus another 11 in five games with the U18s.

Who are some NHL comparables for Matthews in terms of playing style/ potential? From the little I've seen of him at the WJC his game made me think of a combination between Toews and Nash, his size and build being somewhere in the middle of the two as well. Obviously these comparables are in the high side in terms of upside but he looks like he could become that good.

Hope the Leafs can grab him next year. Realistically I see us taking Strome this year, we could have a lethal combo up the middle in the next few years.

Matthews-Strome-Kadri-Gauthier. All homegrown too

Matthews is American.

+ Matthews isn't playing with Tuch/Milano/Hanifin/Werenski

He might be number one right now, but next year I really think it's a battle of 4 players with Sokolov, Chychrun and Puljujarvi, and he certainly won't be pulling ahead of the pack ala McDavid or Eichel. It's going to be an insane top 5.

Eichel barely played any games with Hanifin or Werenski last year.

Matthews has played with Tkachuk, Bracco, Roslovic, etc.

Neither lacked for talented teammates during their U18 seasons. This is an irrelevant point in the comparison between the two.

Yeah so 2 top 17 picks versus 2 2nd round picks...
