It is kind of a shame that Scherbak is a 95 born, he should be eligible for AHL next year, Matthews and Scherbak would be a great combination to see in the WHL, but at least Bajkov will still be in Everett, and Matthews/Bajkov may produce in their draft eligible years similar to MacKinnon/Drouin.

I see your point but that's a bit of a stretch.

At this age was Toews a better prospect than Matthews is? I would argue he is a better prospect than Toews was by a hair. Just wanted some other peoples opinions.

Toews wasnt a great prospect, he achieved his ideal development. Matthews is a better prospect, but may end up the lesser player.

Toews was a pretty big deal. Although I don't think he was in play for #1.

He's was, along with Kessel for the first half of the season.

But those who think he was close to Eichel are crazy, he reached his peak. In fact, I remember the announcers salivating over him when he was at the World championships before he played an NHL game. They were saying '' he's going to be an NHL captain some day''

Huh? He was far and away the top prospect for the 88 birth year in Western Canada who set and still has records in top tournaments like the "John Reid".

I guess I should qualify that with great being relative to being a top 10 pick. In his draft year, Toews was obviously acclaimed, but he could have easily went 5th overall. There were serious questions about his upside. He was viewed as the high floor, low ceiling pick of the top 5.

After a 6 point weekend Matthews has 90 points on the season. With 2 USHL games left to play and likely 8 additional games with the U18 WJC I'd say there's a good chance he's going to break Kane's 102 point NTDP single season record.

90? What?

It looks like NTDP stats also don't show his three points from the WJC. So he should have 93.

Impressive season.

What a beast. I checked EP and I thought it said fewer. Today it matches the NTDP website.

Yep. He has 1 less point in 2 less games played than Jack Eichel in the USHL too. Will probably beat him in that category too. Still very curious to see where he ends up next season. Has there been any reports which schools he could potentially go to? I think I remember hearing something about it a while back that he had visited or had interest from a couple, but can't remember which ones at the top off my head. Obviously if he goes to the CHL it will be Everett but I'm curious about NCAA options.

In October, USCHO noted five teams -- BC, BU, DU, Michigan, and UND:
“I’m just taking my time with everything,†Matthews said. “Both routes are not bad routes at all. I think if I’m going to commit to play somewhere — I’m a man of my word, I’m going to go play there.

“So, right now, I’m just going to sit back and weigh my options and make sure I find what the best fit is for me.â€

Matthews said he has narrowed down his college options to five schools: Boston University, Boston College, North Dakota, Michigan and Denver. He hasn’t taken any visits, but will do so as the season goes along.
Then, earlier this month, there was this report, which added Wisconsin to the mix.

Not sure NCAA is best route. Sure its a better league than CHL with older players, but you run the risk of being trapped behind seniors and putting up less points

If you go to the CHL you get to play way more games as the go to guy against lesser opposition. Way better chance to showcase

Elite players don't get trapped behind seniors. When has that happened with top 3 prospects going the NCAA route?

Matthews won't get "trapped" behind any seniors. I'd much rather he pick his spot in college than end up in Everett. People seem to forget that not all CHL programs have the same track record for success with developing talent.

That's probably the case for lower-end guys but not for a guy like Matthews. I'm thinking NCAA would be the better option for him. He's going to be more challenged there than he will be in WHL. In the end it doesn't matter much though, both options are perfectly viable, I just personally prefer college for most prospects.

If you go to a good program, the seniors there could be legit NHL prospects and 50 point guys in NCAA. Even a guy like Matthews, a rookie, could be caught behind them or a bit. Eichel went to a weak Boston team who didn't really have the talent to outplay him

Also the NCAA is tougher, so say you have a rough first 10 games due to adjustment, you have way less of a chance to rebound and your draft stock could take a hit

CHL, you basically step in and can dominate.

But just because you can step in and dominate the CHL, doesn't mean it's going to be better for your overall development.

NCAA may be the tougher course, but that doesn't make it the wrong one.

Not a big fan of Everett's development system, the NCAA seems to be the better option for surging hockey stars in many situation. Chances are we are going to be seeing a lot more high end first rounders from the college system in the years to come.

Maybe a coaching change at Wisconsin would send him there

Granato or Osieki would make Wiscy the front runner and Tony G would be a lock IMO
