C Auston Matthews (2016, 1st, TOR) VII

6'2 215 at 19...everything he has ranges from great to elite...his size, his skating and speed, his IQ and compete level, his vision and passing, stick work and hands, and his shot

should be a top 5-10 player in nhl some day, his max ceiling is number 2 player in hockey

I would agree that he does lack absolute top-end speed (if by top-end you mean McDavid/Eichel/Larkin level of speed) but his shot is absolutely top-end. His wrister has been compared to Sakic's.



Don't worry us Leafs fans are grinding our teeth waiting for the season to start. It's been so long since we've had a player of Matthews' caliber.

We've seen the few amazing plays that have been gif'd so far today, but how about:

The amazing kick pass at 10:45
The great stick work to keep the puck going up the ice at 11:45
The hand eye and co-ordination and skill to bat the puck down out of mid-air, and get immediate control of the puck at 13:25

That move he does at 2:24 just blows my mind.

He does it at top speed, and with about a half second to think about how to protect the puck ... he drags it behind him, through his legs off his own foot. Nasty, nasty move.

The way the crowd gives a big "Whoa!" lets you know what they think about it, (Montreal fans who will learn to hate Matthews I'm sure).

His hands and hand-eye coordination are just ridiculous

I think Lemieux may have been closer to 6'5, 6'4 1/2 I think. That's what I've heard, and it certainly appeared like he was 6'5. As far as forwards who are actually listed at 6'5 though Sundin was likely the best.

Yeah, I made that post in jest. Obviously, it's not the biggest deal whether you're 6'4 or 6'5, when you have the talent of Lemieux. I just think it's a nice piece of trivia that no other center of Sundin's caliber or better has ever been listed at 6'5 or taller.

Just thinking about Sundin makes me depressed. I miss him badly.

I'm obviously a huge Sundin fanatic, and I think of Matthews as a Sundin+ kind of player...I think you can safely say goodbye to the post Sundin depression era my friend :)

That's the hope! I also see similarities in size (though Matthews isn't monstrous), speed, ability to shield the puck and fight off checks... though Mats had a tremendous backhand and slapshot... I don't know enough of Matthews' shooting other than he has a wicked wrister...

In any case, Matthews looks to be a worthy successor to Mats. I can't believe we haven't had a true #1 center in 8 years.
 
One thing I've been impressed with his Matthews versatility. He hasn't looked out of place at all on the wing.

He's elite, no question about it.

Very well could be, but it's around this time of year that the 'shiney new toy' syndrome is at its peak. I remember last season around this time and into October people were claiming Eichel may be as good as McDavid. We need to see this kid in the NHL for an entire season to witness how his strong traits translate to the pros, and also observe areas he needs to improve on.

I also find Matthews skating looks improved so far from the last time I seen him (not that it was bad prior). He's been very impressive, Leaf fans should be very happy to have him. I know our Oilers coach thinks highly of him and is showing lots of trust in him, I believe he was playing one of the D points on the PP last game.

Does anyone know if he's been focusing on his skating this offseason? His acceleration looks better to me, anyone else notice this too?

On one pad, Matthews and his group worked with Leafs skating coach Barb Underhill. The group looked at times like synchronized swimmers performing carefully choreographed movements, only on skates.

Underhill quickly noticed a flaw in Matthews’ stride: his left shoulder wasn’t coming across enough.

“She definitely paid close attention to it so I’ll try and work on it throughout the week,†Matthews said.

As a leaf fan I'm not complaining, but it would've been pretty cool if he was a few days older and made the draft. Him leading the Arizona rebuild while simultaneously introducing the game to a bunch of people in Arizona would've been cool.

IMHO I'd attribute some of it to having a bit of extra jump in his step now, after some time off, most of us viewed him at the end of a long season.

I don't say this to be offensive, but it would've been a fascinating story had Matthews gone to Winnipeg. Winnipeg loses its team to Phoenix, then the Coyotes helped inspire Arizona-raised Matthews to play hockey, and then ends up playing for a reincarnate team in Winnipeg.

In other words, Matthews the hockey player would never have existed if Winnipeg didn't "sacrifice" their team in the first place. The fruits of that loss is then resurrected back to Winnipeg. It sounds religious, in a way.

Nevertheless, it's nothing more than a cool story. Laine is an outstanding player in his own right.
