He was much, much better than the stat line indicates. He was on for 2 goals against, but neither were really his fault. Fantastic individual zone entries. His hands never cease to amaze as he had several highlight reel dangles through multiple challengers including one on the first goal. People that say Matthews isn't as "flashy" as Eichel or Laine or whoever clearly have never watched him. He's been dropping jaws left and right while making it seem effortless.

Biggest disappointment was actually the lack of chemistry with his new linemates. Otherwise he seems to be getting better and more confident with each minute on the ice. Once again, he doesn't just look like he belongs, he's legitimately performing as one of the Top 4-5 Forwards.

His hands are incredible. Completely underrated in that department.

why is he even in this team
proved nothing at the nhl level while top nhl rookies are not in

and mcdavid captain vs 2 time stanley cup player

this is partly why this world cup is an extended version of the allstar game

nice for tv thats about it

Matthews is clearly able to play this caliber, heck he is even already one of the best forward.

You're upset because Galchenyuk isn't on the team.

He deserves to be on the team. They took Trocheck instead.

Matthews is a top 3 forward on team NA. He has nothing to do with Galchenyuk not being there.

:help:

What?

The guy is playing better than half his NHL teammates.

Matthews has been damn impressive, incredibly psyched to see him on the Leafs. Still hard to believe we actually got him. Been a true standout thus far; of course none of the games have mattered as of yet but he's been borderline fantastic in the dress rehearsals imo. Playing with confidence, like he belongs.

...but...but some random guy on HF told me he doesn't deserve to be there!

Reminds me a bit of a centre west coast centre with his all around non flashy good game.

Haters are hilarious because how stupid they usually sound.
Matthews was second or third best player on the ice yesterday. Did you even watch the game?

I want matthews on the first line because that line had no chemistry as others have mentioned yesterday. I'd say he had more chemistry on the 3rd line that's why I would bring back that line and make it the second line or try him with mcdavid vs the czechs. McDavid was invisible yesterday so he needs that extra spark which might be matthews.

He's on the team because he's one of the best players under the age of 23 in North America. Pretty simple stuff. Watch the last game and please tell everyone on here that he doesn't deserve to be on the team.

Also, McDavid is known to be a leader ever since his midget days and he's in line to be the captain of the Oilers this year or next year. Literally following any part of his career should remove doubt about this.

Can't believe how good this kid is. Elite talent, elite IQ, elite skating, elite vision, elite shot, elite passing... he's also extremely mature. Carries himself like a seasoned veteran.

This season is going to be fun to watch. Lots of good young stars coming up.

Anyone notice how Matthews hasn't had a decent shot on goal the past 2 games? He's had scoring chances, but no open shots on goal.

I wonder how long it will take him to figure it out.

Idk, I find that he's extremely flashy- with all the direction changing, dangles, quick hands and even that one between the legs thing he did. Can't really say who he reminds me of too much because the more I watch of him, the more I see a mixture of a few players.

That is one thing I noticed too about not only Matthews but Laine too. Before, on the euro ice, they had a little bit more room and a moment or two extra to shoot. They will have to get used to the NHL style of guys getting sticks and bodies in front of everything.

A lot of that is Matthews own doing as well though, he's had some great chances where he's passed instead of shooting.

He'll learn though, too smart not to.

I think some of it has to do with him being on the wing. When was the last time Matthews played on the wing?

I see him on the wing and pulling a deke to cut into the middle where his usual scoring chances are but he's drawing more attention.

Yeah, there's a combination of reasons he hasn't had an excellent scoring chance yet. Though he had a couple pretty good ones in the first game.

It's really hard to complain about as in reality he has only played 2 NHL level games and even though Europe is considered the weakest of the teams, they are still a lot stronger than the average NHL team.
