Czech coach was by far the worst
1. Left Hudler/Vrbata at home because of personal reasons
2. Picked Nedved
3. Didn't even start Pavalec or Salak vs Sweden, instead started third string.
4. Didn't use Krejci and Voracek
5. Picked his son in law

I am amazed at how many people are just co k ing to the revelation that Bylsma sucks. He is the most overrated coach in hockey by far. My stomach turns when I have to hear Pierre talks about him like he is a genius during games.

I had no hopes of the US winning a gold when I saw him named as coach. He was fortunate to get the win against Russia.

I would think so. At least the worst in terms of US Olympics history.

On top of abysmal performance in the tourny, he actually pulled strings behind the curtains, using unduly influence to subterfuge the system, in order to get his people onto the team. It's clear that he had his personal interest, rather than his country in his mind during the course of this Olympics. Same with Todd Richards.

Just hilarious that these 2 were behind the same bench

Look at poor Pierre McGuire .

I said it years back and I'll say it again: He's the Erik Spoelstra of the NHL. He's a player's coach that is good at handling superstars and that goes a long way. He's good at handling adversity during the regular season (getting his guys to play in spite of injured stars/bad luck), but he does not have the hockey mind to outfox the likes of a Babcock, Q, Julien, Hitchcock or even a Carlyle.. especially in a 7 game series.

Bad comparison because Spoelstra at least has a great defensive system in place and has maximized the utility of Lebron (who he gives freedom to gamble passing lanes with) and maximized the utility of Bosh (who is a great P'N roll perimeter defender, even on switches but weak in the post). He mitigates this by having his perimeter players help a crap ton inside....they hedge a crap ton on P'N R's too (but every team in the league does that these days); and they have the athletes to make up the ground if the ball swings. He gets his team to play great team defense even though the individual defenders aren't that great (save Lebron). It helps that he has an elite perimeter/passing lane defender in Lebron, obviously, but he definitely mitigates the deficiencies of individual defenders on the team like Bosh..who was absolutely garbage when it came to interior defense on the Raptors but is definitely; one of the best perimeter defenders for a big man.

Bylsma doesn't appear to have any tatical strategy to any of his moves that lead me to believe he is on par with Spoelstra, who I consider to be an above-average-> good coach but certainly not an elite coach; like a Pops in SA.

At least now American fans will understand why Penguins fans complain about DB, and not just because we like to complain if we don't win Cups. ;)

Bylsma could be a great coach, but his biggest fatal flaw seems to be his stubbornness to change/adapt. With Bylsma, it's one way -- his way -- regardless of whether it's working or not. And if it doesn't work, he doesn't learn from the mistakes. He simply trots out the "we just didn't execute/we just didn't get to our game" line.

I think though a major issue is Tortorella and Laviolette sort of have the same problem...Laviolette was ultimately fired by the Isles because he refused to mix lines up in the 03 playoff series vs Ottawa and he had similar issues leading to his demise in Raleigh...both guys have bad tempers too and occasionally get brash with the media, I think that played into them sort of feeling backed into a corner on settling with Bylsma....don't forget Torts issues with the Rangers offense and PP may have also scared Burke and company.

5-0 says otherwise.

There can be more than one problem with a coach.

A Sabres fan trying to make it about goaltending. What a surprise.

I think they should've started Miller today because he'd be hungry to play and the guy deserves some ice time. But goaltending wasn't why they lost. The team was crap on ice.

On topic, thanks to the Russian and Czech coach, Bylsma is not the worst. But he certainly wasn't good.

Maybe. But I think Laviolette's system would've worked much better with the size of the ice. Does he not have a more free-flowing system built on fast transition? Bylsma's system just felt... wrong. The offense was horrid in the important games and the PP was complete ********.

i don't know why we didn't bring back ron wilson, bylsma basically demanding his two penguins on there was a joke, orpik did not belong :shakehead

I have never seen a coach who is worse at line matching. I don't know if he just doesn't try or if he's bad at it, but either way it doesn't work.

Until recently, I thought, that most of the time, he just didn't bother matching lines.

Now, I kind of wonder if he actually did some line matching, just that it didn't make any sense and made it look like he really wasn't.

If this theory is somewhat true...
Wow, this would be actually much worse : maybe we didn't have an ignorant coach (on certain points) all these years, just a dumb one.

What was Laviolette's role on the team? I saw him coaching next to Bylsma in one of the games.

He wanted the Toews line to match up against the Kessel line...absolutely crazy

Probably to match lines.

Given that the Penguins have Jacques Martin, they have no reason not to use him to match lines.

Ah ah, this is shading a new light on a lot of past games.

For instance, maybe he wanted Crosby vs Bergeron, Malkin vs Chara in playoffs last year.(and I'm dead serious there)

The rest is history, Julien couldn't get away from his brilliant line matching and just gave up. Unfortunately, good breaks and bounces weren't on the Penguins side.. All of that resulting in a "tight" sweep of the series by the Bruins, but with Bylsma definitely emerging victorious:yo: (Well, this might be more or less what Shero had to say to the owners, prior to Bylsma's extension.)

Bylsma is about as tactically stupid as his Penguin predecessor Therrien. Don't know, but the Czech coach, Bylsma, and the Russian coach are neck-and-neck as to who is the worst.

What did the Czech coach do other than start Pavelec? Honest question as I didn't get to watch many games. I'd like to say starting Pavelec would be enough to be named the worst coach of the tournament, but the Jets keep going back to that well no matter how many times it's come up empty.
