If you haven't tried the Armchair GM on Capfriendly, it is pretty cool. I made another team where I used all the first round picks and was able to keep Jones, Werenski, Texier and both goalies. Again, likely VERY, VERY far fetched, but I made trades with Dallas for Seguin and Gurianov and Tampa for Palat. I re-signed Laine too. Here's a lineup that I was able to put together and still have 2.5M in cap space. Here's another pipe dream.

Laine - Seguin - Atkinson
Gurianov - Roslovic - Bjorkstrand
Nyquist - Texier - Palat
Robinson - Jenner - Chinakov

Werenski - Jones
Gavrikov - Ceci
Del Zotto - Peeke
Lehtonen

Merzlikins
Korpisalo

It's not too unrealistic in my opinion. If Jarmo/JD want to spend their chips then we'll have a very capable roster.

I do think Seguin might be in play. Same with Palat. Gurianov though, I can't imagine the Stars putting him on the block absent a big overpay.

Agreed.

If they opt to let go of RNH and Klefbom ends up going LTIR for the last two years of his deal, they'll have a ton of cap space to use for secondary scoring.

I'm in the "blow it up" camp on the CBJ and I know you're not. That being said, I'd think that the CBJ could get quite a few draft picks for a guy like Atkinson or even Domi from Edmonton. I'd think that Robinson and perhaps even Foudy (for his speed alone as a McDavid wing) would be of interest to them. I'd think that they'd be willing to pay a good price for Laine as well. Yamamoto could probably be had coming back.

If Jones can't come to terms, perhaps he could be shipped there as well. He and Nurse would be a formidable duo.

I see the two teams as having a very strong chance of being trading partners this summer. The problem for those in the "retool" camp is that Edmonton's roster is so thin that draft picks are probably their best assets at this point.

Your thoughts?

I'm in the camp that the Jackets should either go for broke or go for a rebuild. I don't want to be stuck halfway. If they decide to opt for a rebuild then I do agree that Edmonton would make a good trading partner. They'll have the cap space from what you mentioned and also potentially from moving out Neal and Koskinen's contracts.

If I'm putting my Oilers GM cap on, the two guys I'm trying to get from Columbus are Jones and Elvis. Those are just big upgrades. They need forwards but they can get them from a lot of places. If the Oilers can extend Jones and Elvis (which I think is actually plausible), I could see the Oilers offer something like Holloway (great prospect) + 2 1sts + Kassian and Koskinen. Those last two players are cap dumps, though Kassian I'd actually want in the Metro next year.

The prices won't be so good for the Jackets' forwards. They'd want Domi but maybe not even for a 1st round pick, they'll want to save those for harder to get commodities - think like Rakell or Meier. I think Domi would garner a 2nd+. Atkinson I'm not sure they'd accept without retention - they'd want the player but they'd be scared of the term. Laine's value is just on the PP and they don't need help there. Foudy and Robinson are okay as play drivers but they're looking for guys with finishing touch at 5v5. So those are generally valuable players but not Oilers targets in particular. They'd pay through the teeth for Bjorkstrand, as would a lot of teams, but that's one guy that I would never trade from the Jackets unless we're planning on a reaaaallly painfully long rebuild.

I don't know where the stupid theory is that Laine is a PP player and nothing more. But his salary would be problem for them.
They could need Robinson, maybe Foudy or Jenner. They need similar players.

His points mean nothing in this game.
Except he is a very gifted player and has easily the talent to be a top 9 playing for the blue jackets (i know the bar is not that high)
Best player in the swiss team during the worldcup (above Hischier and Meier)

Completely theoretical of course but considering where those picks will probably be slotted... I'm depressed thinking about that return for a Jones & Elvis package deal.

Maybe I'm not as ready for a rebuild as I think I am

I wrote about this game. Besides WC means nothing. Often players from European leauges play better than from NHL.

O.K. TOP 9 wingers:

Bjorkstrand, Laine, Atkinson, Jenner (don`t forget he would play in the 4th line), Nyquist. Then we have young Bemstrom, Foudy and Texier (if he wouldn`t play on the center), maybe Chinakhov. Sorry, but I would like to see youngs who can progress there and not 29 year old player. It`s in way Danforth too.

He is better than Pius Suter (roughly 20 goals in a normal season) who just had a pretty good rookie season playing for the blackhawks
Now of course if the goal is to develop youngsters there is no room for "old" top nine
Just thought that it would be great to have post season time to time.

Why not just fold the Jackets and merge them with Edmonton?

What Edmonton needs to do is not try to do something sexy. They need to fill their team with good role playing forwards. And not give big, long contracts. They should be all over Reilly Nash. They should try to build a fairly cheap shut down line that turns 60 minutes of McDrai trying to outscore the other team into 47 minutes of McDrai trying to outscore the other team. Wennberg is someone who could be a good piece in Edmonton. He passes and plays defense he could play down on their lineup but come up if there are injuries. Barclay Goodrow. They should look for some $2 or $3 million for 2 or 3 year type guys that are solid contributors. If Tampa has to trade Palat for not much, pick him up. Grab an old cup chasing Canadian boy like Toronto did. Maybe go after Mrazek. Try to hold onto their assets for the trade deadline, not go crazy in the off-season.

I don`t know what Jarmo and JD want I only say my idea. But i really don`t know where he could play.

He`s a left winger. So, forget youngs and Danforth.
the right wingers: Bjorkstrand, Laine (he can play there), Atkinson
the left wingers: Nyquist, Jenner and he

Hofmann /29/--Atkinson /32/ (speed)
Nyquist /32/--Bjorkstrand /26/ (chemistry)
Jenner /28/--Laine /23/ (because of Patrik`s defense)

I think wingers are enough old for a reload team. Because in 2022 years 3 players will have 30 years and more, two 27 and more and only 1 under 25. And only Laine and Bjork will probably progress, Gus and Cam probably regress, of course step by step. At the same time, Hofmann would not be a TOP player, but probably only a little average player. Jenner is a grinder.

Are you just generally opposed to a rebuild, or opposed to trades, or you think we can get a better deal elsewhere?

Don't know much about Holloway but unless he is a great, great prospect I think (would hope) the return for Elvis & Jones should be higher. With both being pending UFA's that does diminish their value a bit so maybe I'm overvaluing their value.

Edit: Just realized the 1sts would be 22 & 23 rather than this year so I'm in for this deal. Can always buy out Kassian if needed after one year if necessary. Do see the need for his type to ward off Wilson and wannabes.

I usually only go there when I'm in a grumpy mood, want to browbeat folks who don't take the Jackets seriously, and can't find enough of them on TR&FA. ;)

Seriously, all I have to do is find another Merzlikins for Koskinen/Caleb Jones guy. Or the next Laine-for-Drouin proposal. Or damn near any Flyers AGM involving the Jackets because they're all trying to poach Jones at firesale prices.

I've never seen a 20 year club be treated like an expansion franchise like it is on that site. I started to laugh at all the proposals between Edmonton and CBJ that ended up with Koskinen and Kassian coming to Columbus. At least when I put a club together, I try to make it somewhat fair. The judgements on value are pretty hilarious. Very HFBoards like. Maybe that's why I enjoyed it.

I knew that Gurianov was a stretch, but in the games against the CBJ, he just stood out and at times was the fastest player on the ice. Dallas is a dangerous club that I think if Radulov and Seguin were healthy all year, we'd be talking about TB and Dallas again, only in the Central finals.

I expect Dallas will have a major bounce back next year. Bishop was also injured all year. Roope Hintz had something bothering him all season. Having no post season probably helps them get ready for next year. Big names are all still under contract. Robertson got plenty of playing time and looks like the real deal. Recent first round picks seem to be developing. Mavrique Borque got games in the QMJHL and played a few in the AHL (5 points in 6 games). Thomas Harley has decent numbers for a 19 year old defenseman in AHL. They have all their future draft picks so they can be a player at the deadline next year.

Totally. I also expect a lot from Dellandrea next season and Riley Damiani could get a shot, too since he was ppg this season in the AHL.

Yeah I think the injury bug bit them... they started the season on fire (after being delayed) like 6-0 if I remember correctly - even without Seguin.

Holloway is a blue chipper - should be NHL ready now and he might even end up as a top liner. He's in the tier of prospects just below the A+ guys like Seider, Drysdale, Byfield, and Zegras.

Our leverage isn't great because both Jones and Elvis are so close to UFA. If they don't get extended as part of the deal then we're just looking at rental prices. That and the goalie market is still the goalie market.

I have it basically as
Elvis for a late 1st + Koskinen.
Jones for Holloway + late 1st + Kassian.

I could be easily wrong about that valuation - but in either direction for all I know.
