Just to understand Peterkas value, he may have almost as much value as the 9th overall pick this draft.

I'd say his value is as high as 11th overall this draft, as low as 21st.

9th + 16th is too much for Fiala given the salary cap world and the fact that Buffalo has significant wing depth. 9th + 41st would be fair value for Buffalo but would necessitate secondary moves.

If Ottawa offers 7th overall plus a prospect with high 2nd round value that seems a fair trade for both sides.

Peterka just had a year that anybody who drafts 2OA would be happy if that player (Slaf, Cooley) could match next year. Peterka is about as untouchable as it gets.

Ristolainen is exactly why you don't take prior trades as the end all be all for "market value."

Who would win:
2 recent trades of similar players in identical contractual situations OR
the blind hope that you get substantially more

Those trades tell you something about the market. Sorry you don't like what it's saying. (I didn't care for it either when we traded Reinhart, but tough shit.)

Probably not really fair to compare players just being drafted to a player in his D+2 year, but your point is well taken - If Matty Beniers (2OA last year) put up that season in the AHL this upcoming year, it would be a very solid season. (although some Kraken fans are expecting that in the NHL after his 9 points in 10 NHL games to close out this season, but there was a lot of puck luck, so I personally do not feel that is realistic).

Third option: Guerin is enough of a hard ass that he will get what he wants in a trade.

I dont disagree. Where would you draft him if he was in this upcoming draft, 5th overall?

Ristolainen is a RD available.

this off-season you also have talk of Boesser, Miller by Vancouver on the market as well as Laine. If you have a market like that could limit the market even further.

Minnesota is hindered further by not really being able to take salary back.

No interest in seeing Buffalo move the #9 pick, and especially no interest in seeing them move Peterka.

I’d be interested in Fiala but not at that price. I’d offer something like their late 1st (Florida) and someone like Ryan Johnson (recent 1st round pick) + maybe offer to take a cap dump (depending on contract length) as a sweetener if needed, to give Min some cap space.
Would possibly think about the VGK 1st (#16) instead of Florida’s but it would probably have to be an on the clock trade (depends who’s left on the board).

If another team can offer a better deal, that’s fine. No interest in entering a bidding war.

Buffalo isn't in a position to add Fiala right now -- it's the area of least need and he'd be bumping young players off the roster.

Buffalo needs a goalie and a defenseman, maybe a vet center. UFA-to-be wingers are not on the shopping list at all.

The Wild don’t have any cap dumps available and your proposed offer is less than even an offer sheet would return. It’s fine if you don’t want him but that isn’t even in the ball park.

You know less than nothing about mittelstadt, but that is ok, not many do.

I predict your post is going to age quite poorly

He turns 24 early next season and we've been hearing "this is the season Mittlestadt will prove everyone wrong" for like four years at this point.

It only feels like 4 years because of Covid....

The hype in Buffalo began at the end of last season, when he really started to play with confidence. There were high hopes this year, but he was injured in the first game of the season. He missed 20 games, came back, played a few games, and was injured again and required surgery.

When he finally came back, it took a while to find his game, but when he did, he played a mature, solid two way game in every zone, but injuries really derailed his season this year.

Botterill stupidly brought him into the league as a physically immature 19 year old, and posters here labelled him a bust because he was underwhelming. But anyone that watched him play at the end of last season or the end of this season can clearly see the kid can play. He has slick hands, great vision, and plays hard up and down the ice.

If he stays healthy, he's likely going to turn some heads.

The doghouse
aside from these two teams trading a bunch, a fiala to Buffalo trade makes very little sense.

Surprised to see this thread still going. Last year was the year for Buffalo to target fiala, not now

Which center out of Hartman, Eriksson Ek, and Gaudreau is Mittelstadt better than? Go ahead.

If Guerin were to do his due diligence and trade for Mittlestadt, you will be thrilled.

He has a way of turning crappy centers into gold.
