Anaheim likely had no interest in giving up that package or Eichel’s preferred surgery.

Adams was a fool for even asking for that with a straight face.

Fortunately for him - he was able to get a sensible deal done which could end up being a win-win.

I think this clearly shows that Adams was indeed brought down a peg or two & did not hold out for his desired return like some had stated at the time of the trade. He initially made a huge misjudgement but was smart enough to reassess & compromise.

That's a terrible take. Have you ever negotiated anything before? Start high and compromise later. You don't end up with the package he got if he says, "Oh, please let us take your Kesler and a 3rd, good sir!" He says, "Look, we have an excellent player available, the kind of skillset that is available for trade once every 15+ years, and if you want him, you're gonna pay for him."

I have negotiated before - many times. I'm assuming that you actually haven't - given your response.

If someone is unrealistic or delusional - you walk away. Which is exactly what Anaheim likely did in response to this.

If someone makes me an offer on my property for half of it's value - there's no negotiating - i already know the bidder isn't serious. If I'm looking at buying a property where the owner has an asking price of double it's value - i find another property to bid on instead.

My point was mainly directed towards a few people who were adamant that Adams had 'held out' for his initial ask. But others here - including myself - suspected that Adams initial ask was stupid & this is the reason the whole saga dragged out for so long. This report proves the latter to be correct.

It absolutely does not prove the latter to be correct. By all accounts the Sabres targeted Krebs in a Vegas deal, and once he was on the table from a LV side, it got done. It's too early to say how good the deal will be for Buffalo, but getting Krebs is a huge positive.

No it does not. You speculating that something “likely” happened doesn’t make it so.

It still just anyone’s guess

Even if Adams did ask for that package from the Ducks, it was likely done over the summer. People seem to have recency bias due to the play of Zegras this season, but prior to the season and even in the early stages both Zegras and Drysdale were not performing to the level they are now. That's not to say they weren't extremely valuable assets, just that their stock has risen considerably in the first 1/3rd of the season. If anyone watched that first Sabres/Ducks game Zegras looked decent but Drysdale looked terrible, neither looked like the players we are seeing now just 20 games later.

this also could have been the ask right when Adams took over as GM thinking he was an idiot.

I was looking at VGK on capfriendly after their game last night and made me think of the trade. A couple thoughts I had:

1. Remember the strong rumor that Elvenes was one of the pieces? I wonder if Vegas was up to Tuch, Elvenes and a 1st. Certainly we would want KA to hold out for Krebs. All conjecture of course.

2. How are they going to be cap compliant when Eichel comes back?

Assuming this reported ask is true - it proves it to be correct. I will concede that Friedman is capable of making up BS - but for the sake of this discussion I AM assuming it's true.

Krebs is irrelevant here. We ended up getting a nice package. I personally predicted something VERY close to what we actually got right at the start.... When others were expecting the type of fantasy package from Anaheim that was never going to happen.

There's a huge difference between the two:

Zegras > Krebs
Drysdale > Tuch
2020 3OV > Probable late 2021 R1
Probable early-mid 2021 R1 > Pick swap

this also could have been the ask right when Adams took over as GM thinking he was an idiot.

Zegras & Drysdale had huge value before this season. Zegras was seen by many as the best player in the world not currently in the NHL with Drysdale not far behind. Their success is not unexpected in the sense their value has suddenly increased. That logic might be fairly applied to a guy like Devon Levi - but not here.

And why would Adams think Murray is an idiot. The apparently underqualified rookie GM does not & should not have that mindset. If anything - it would be the other way round where the experienced veteran thinks he might be able to fool the new guy...

Adams held out for something. Hopefully more than he was getting over the summer.

I'm not sure many would argue that he held out for his intial offer.

Seems like an easy leak from Anaheim to explain why Eichel ended up on another team in their division.
Maybe. But there is not a lot of pressure from their fans right now with the team doing good and with Zegras and Drysdale doing good.

Now when Eichel torches them in the regular season and playoffs........it might be a different story.

In response to your second question, I still think that there is a 2nd part of the Eichel trade coming. I think there is an agreement in place for us to take salary back to help them get cap compliant when Jack is healthy / at the deadline. Obviously, it's conjecture so there's no way to know what it'll end up being but I'm suspecting something around Reilly Smith. Maybe Smith and our 3rd back for a 7th or Future Considerations. That 3rd rounder in the deal always struck me as odd. This would ensure we'd be willing to take the salary on to recoup our asset. Also lets us retain on Smith and flip him. (hopefully anyways)

With all the injuries that VGK were dealing with at the time of the trade, they couldn't afford to lose Smith at the time so it would make sense to punt this part of the deal into the future. Helps Vegas now and nets Buffalo more value later.

What we ended up with was damn close to what most people were predicting, because that would be the middle ground between the Sabres high-end ask and the other team's low-ball offer. The pieces from Anaheim were the ask, so the end result was a lower value because of middle-ground negotiation. I feel like you're arguing the same thing that I am but taking the facts in a wildly speculative direction at the end.

You should read some of the threads again. There were people who genuinely thought Zegras+Drysdale+30V+another R1 was a realistic ask.

There were (maybe still are) people out there who think we lost the deal big time. Although once the deal is done - a percentage will have taken the tinted glasses off & see the situation more for what it is.

Reilly Smith is worth way more than that. They could possibly get a R1 for him at the TDL. Certainly a R2 at minimum.

I do wonder how they will manage it - they are basically going to have to lose a good player for futures.
