My point is the Sabres have already punted those seasons away because of Skinner. They aren't going to win a cup with $9million in untradeable dead cap during that time. Adding more dead cap doesn't change that outcome, but it could improve the post 2026-27 outcome.
You know, I didn't really consider that there may be other reasons why Adams didn't want to retain on Eichel (other than Pegula), and that may be Jeff Skinner. He's the harder asset to trade, but maybe not if he gets his game back and the Sabres retain 50% on him. That, or they may want to keep their buy-out options open.

Hamilton: Kyle Okposo knew Jack Eichel had to be traded
Kyle Okposo:
“It was mixed emotions for me. I’ve become pretty close with Jack, especially in the last three years, so that part of the business is never going to be easy. But I think it was time, and there wasn’t going to be an amicable ending to this thing. So I’m happy for him on a personal level. I’ve been privy to more information than most people, but you always want it to work. He’s my friend, but I think it was pretty clear that things were deteriorating from a relationship standpoint and it probably wasn’t going to mend itself.”

Skinner isn't "dead cap." He's a rostered player. He had two horrible seasons under Krueger (as did most Sabres). While the contract is terrible and Skinner's not a great fit on the roster, he's currently on pace for 20-25 goals -- not worth $9m/per -- but not "dead cap." There's a difference. If he can just be a 20 goal scorer under Granato, there's some value in that. While having an underperforming player on a big contract sucks, suggesting the team can't compete until the contract ends is pretty silly.

I think the Wild drafted him and he was exposed in the Vegas expansion draft.

Virtually no one I know expected Vegas to be so competitive right out of the gate. Kudo's to Gerard Gallant for recognizing Tuch's inate talent.
I interpreted the Wild decision with Tuch as believing they had the same player in Greenway. Oh well.

Wise words from Kyle.

Deep down, I also wanted it to work out here but realized it wasn't going to. I am rationalizing that if it wasn't the neck surgery, it would have eventually been something else that would result in his departure.

I really felt he had finally exceeded his potential in the 2019-20 season. Irrespective of his other All Star appearances.

But in retrospect, the high ankle sprain was just a forerunner of what was to come.

I guess we can now safely admit that McDavid is actually a whole lot better player as well...... lol...

Watched th rangers and oilers pregame on msg

rangers analyst said the Eichel picking surgery thing where the player wanted a different unproven surgery was a bad precedent. He believed the nhl should not have allowed it. Now players will be allowed to pick all sorts of experimental stuff. Blonde haired guy

Am I the only one who has absolutely no interest in what Jack has to say at this point? It's like getting a mixtape from an ex that broke up with you a year ago.

I'm interested because it takes two to tango and in this case certainly did (Pegulas) and I think Jack was hours away from throwing them under a large yacht (bus). Elliott said he was in Buffalo the night before to interview Jack Thursday and did not find out about the trade until he woke up at 7:30 am which is why Peters got to break it.

And how would he have thrown Buffalo under the bus? What could Eichel have said that would have swayed any opinions at this point?

If you listen to the 32 thoughts, the word is out that they wouldn't let Eichel get the surgery that he thought was best for him as a player and for him post-hockey.

Peguals are PR wary. Bad enough that star players may want to steer clear (as if they wanted another reason) but to not respect a person's choice in a seriously consequential surgery could have been a huge story.

I know there are two sides of this and you mostly get one side in the podcast. Eichels side is putting out in was business and the Pegulas took it personal. The flip is the Pegulas followed their doctors and that is business but Eichel took that personal.

Yet another chapter in bad break ups (Hasek LaFontaine Nolan Drury/Briere OReilly Rigas Kotalik) just kidding Ales.

Not sure if it's been noted but Jack says he would have been back if the team let him have the surgery. This begs:
Did they feel that strongly about surgery options?
Were they just ready to move Jack because of lack of leadership?

He said he was willing to come back and play to up his trade value. He didn’t want to stay. He still wanted out.

Same here. Never really had an interest in anything he ever said previously either.

The caveat was he would have been back to showcase his play if it helped increase trade value, in return for the surgery HE wanted. It was not an admission he would have stayed in BUF to honor his contract, and it was totally an attempt using the only leverage he had to try to force the surgery he wanted.

I imagine that his coming back would have simply been to show other teams he was a healthy asset in order to help with getting a trade done.
