$9million in dead cap until 2026-27 is insurmountable. Adding more dollars to the dead cap through 2026-27 doesn't make the problem any more or less insurmountable, but it does add assets that can be useful once the dead cap is gone.

The goal is still a cup for me. Saving cap room so we can buy UFAs to try squeaking into the playoffs once or twice between now and 2026-27 is not the goal.

There is no way this team is punting on the next six seasons.

That idea is dumber than retaining $5M per on Eichel for five years.

The pick should have been unprotected

tough to move on, but it is what it is

I worst part is I feel Dahlin is walking the exact same path with how frustrated he is.

People should wait to complain about the protection on the picks in this deal and the Reinhart deal after the season.

If Florida and Vegas make the playoffs, like everyone expects, this is a complete nothingburger.

And given that there were no conditions tied to Eichel's health or future production, I can easily live with this pick being top 10 protected. Especially since it becomes an unprotected 2023 1st if it slides.

would you give someone one of your later three first rounders or a 2nd for someone to take him (AZ ?) ?. Of course nmc is a hurtle.
Certainly

So you're saying the Sabres shouldn't try to compete for 5 years? That's crazy.

All the people saying “Kevyn Adams should have just let Eichel get the ADR surgery” need to read this.

It was never Adams decision and he can’t override the team doctors even if he wanted to.
Team doctors can be fired. If Eichel hadn't become a pariah, Adams and the Pegulas would have replaced the team doctors with ones that would approve ADR.

The team isn't going to punt the better part of another decade away because of Skinner.

My point is the Sabres have already punted those seasons away because of Skinner. They aren't going to win a cup with $9million in untradeable dead cap during that time. Adding more dead cap doesn't change that outcome, but it could improve the post 2026-27 outcome.

They can buy it out in a year or 2 without it being too much of a hurdle. They have a lot of young talent now which means a lot of entry level or bridge contracts in a few years. If they can add some quality vets in there and not overpay them like they did with Hall, Leino, Okposo etc they should be fine. Getting to the play-offs in 3 years won't be impossible so long as their drafting the past couple seasons has been better.

One of the few perks of the way Skinner's contract is structured is that it's relatively buyout-friendly, especially in the later years.

Extending the never-ending cycle of non-competitiveness because of one contract is crazy.

HE is frustrated? If he played up to his potential and revved up his engine to at least 90% and had the results he has then he would be entitled to be frustrated. It is the fan, the team, the management who should feel frustrated.

It looks like the last year of his contract would be about 6M in the event of a buyout

So I can think of two specific posters who will be thrilled by this - @Der Jaeger has long loved Tuch's game. Jame was a huge Krebs fan in his draft year as well.

I'm curious if there is more salary coming along. Seems like this is low.
Tuch is the main ingredient for me here. He's been an Avalanche killer. A constant threat to score in any game. Carries the play with authority. Elite speed. Work ethic 2nd to none. Did I mention elite speed?

Yes? Well, I'll say it again. Elite speed.

Same National Wrd/Jrs team as Eichel and Matthews, and a upstate NY developed hockey player.

He'll return to form. No worries.

How did he initially end up in Vegas again, I've forgotten ? Just an expansion numbers game so was traded to Vegas ? Was he really raw then ?

I think the Wild drafted him and he was exposed in the Vegas expansion draft.

Virtually no one I know expected Vegas to be so competitive right out of the gate. Kudo's to Gerard Gallant for recognizing Tuch's inate talent.

I'd say the opposite is true.

Now do that again but with the buyout happening in summer 2024 or '25 and you'll see what I meant when I said the contract gets more buyout-friendly in later years.

Traded to Vegas so they pick a certain player from the Wild instead of someone else. Same way they got Theodore from the Ducks (traded to Vegas so they pick Stoner).

And Karlsson from Columbus and the Smith trade so they would take Marchessault. Multiple teams outsmarted themselves.

OK, so you traded your best chip to a team that is SUPPOSED to be better already and is painfully cap spaced but is BEHIND you guys in the standings. YOU who just reached the floor (alcohol anonymous style capwise, somehow) and have Rasmus Dahlin, Skinner and Anders Björk problems and is without Middletown, Joke E. Harju, Power, the return chip Tuch and Krebs and suffer from cheapgoalieitis. I mean, HOW (free to fill in the right word here) can things be?

Who the hell is rowing the boat? Asplund? Okposo?? Robert Hägg???
