How much is tanking an entire season worth? That's what Jack cost us.
All the players, time, and hope is also a cost. Realistically, we can attach the Skinner contract to this saga, and that's not going away for a long time, either. As much as we're happy this is over, it's really not a time for celebration at all. It's just more of the mentality we've had to take on as Sabre fans that were optimistically on to the next chapter.

you're taking a big leap assuming that the sabres did not want to retain because pegula said so. feels more to me like a decision made by the hockey department that aligns with their philosophy on team building and roster construction.

not really. Why would, let’s say 2.5m a year for 5 years be a deal breaker from a capology stand point We won’t be approaching the cap for what, 3? 4 Years? It’s 3% of the cap. You can’t build a contender on 97% of the cap?

Not trying to rain on you, but what you have to ask yourself is if you were a Vegas fan, would you be unhappy with the return? I'm not unhappy with the return, because Jack was surely a goner, but if I was rooting for Vegas, I'm pretty sure I'd be much happier.
But I'm not a Vegas fan. If try to look at this situation from both sides, it is probably a good trade for both teams, although there is certainly a risk due to this surgery of Jack. You can see what I've been talking about all these months. Krebs + Tuch + 1st was exactly what I wanted.

It's a given that we were never going to "win" this trade. We're all just happy that it's finally over and we got about as good a return as could have been expected.

Paying 12.5 million for 5 years for a player not even here is absolutely brutal money management. Add that on top of Skinner's contract and you are really showing how dumb you are.

As a Knights fan, you guys are getting some good players.

Tuch is a big guy who can skate fast. He deserves to be in the top 6. The problem with him is he always seems to be injured. Hopefully this injury is his last injury. I can see him having a career year with you guys. Maybe not this season cause he will be back early next year, but next season for sure.

Krebs i cannot really make a judgment. The Knights were never going to develop him properly cause they just refused to play him at center. Hopefully he works out for you guys as well.

Thanks, but I think it will be nowhere near the value of post-surgery Eichel. We put our hopes and future in that guys hands, and now it feels like he used this as a way out(which he admitted to seeking anyways). I don't think many Sabre fans will be wishing for Jack to do well. Some will, but I'm pretty sure I'll be rooting against him. Cheers.

looking at capfriendly, virtually every team i would consider a contender is either within $2.5 of the cap or using ltir to be compliant. very few good teams don't spend right to the cap, and i'm sure the sabres f.o. is planning to be good within 3-4 years.

Happy it's over. Bummed we had to go through this. Hoping Krebs and Tuch bring skill, pace, and play hard for us. Also hoping the barn starts to fill up again. Have been happy with the team's effort so far this year.

I'm not trying to be a Richard, but Krebs does count against the cap, and helps the Sabres get above the floor. Players on LTIR still count against the cap. It's just that if a team is over the cap, the team can get cap relief by the amount of salary by which they exceed the cap (which is not necessarily the salary of the player on LTIR). The Boychuk trade allows them greater flexibility in terms of send-downs to Rochester and/or other roster moves in order to achieve a 23-man NHL roster.
I didn’t say he wouldn’t count against the cap because of LTIR. That would be tuch. Adams said Krebs is going to AHL, which I thought means he won’t count against the cap.

You're right, my bad. 3rd beer. Late game start, wanted to be able to say I watched the first ever game between the Sabres and Seattle Kraken. Imma done drinking, but maybe not done posting. Apologies.

It’s good. I don’t think I was the most clear in my explanation. No stress! I am about there with you too.

when you won’t be spending to the cap 3/5 of those years? No it’s leaving assets on the table.

Teams spend to the max of the cap. Lots of those teams are carrying dead money from buyouts or retention. It’s about making a value choice based in the return of the retention. Adams shut out bidders by not being willing to retain.

IF the Sabres were going for a rebuild.

This wasn’t hypothetical. He said he went to management and asked for a trade before the 2020 season. Whatever the reason he gave, he asked for a trade. Sabres didn’t end up rebuilding and he still asked for a trade based off a feeling he thought they might.

It's absolutely mind boggling/infuriating that they took 6 months to "put together" a trade that half the internet proposed back in June. This shit is not that complicated and yet they act like they were planning the f***ing moon landing.

Yeah...that's the only part I don't like about this deal. I'm happy with the return but myself and probably 100+ other Sabres fans were asking for this over the summer.

What happened is that I think the dynamics changed with Brisson taking over for an incompetent agent/agency previously used by Eichel.

I always assumed Krebs would be the centerpiece because we didn't have the leverage for a high-end first rounder. It is what it is.

I really am only concerned about these picks we are stockpiling. At some point we become the Oklahoma City Thunder where we keep turning actual roster guys into the potential of picks and prospects in perpetuity.

I would not be mad at all if Adams packaged some of these picks to make a run at a higher end guy in the 2022 draft.

We should realistically know now that if we aren't competing for a spot in 23-24 in the playoffs then this whole rebuild is a bust. I know this season is going to end up coming back to earth and next season will/better be the year we give all these prospects pro experience.

At the same time, I get worried that we can continually be in a rebuild mindset and suddenly be thinking of potential rather than results in 2024. If that's the case, I honestly am buying out on my fandom.

McPhee and Adams should have had their interns monitoring HFB.

This trade stuff is SO easy!

A broken battleship, technically.
Heck, call it an air craft carrier, because at his best he is. We've watched him win games alone, and the team disintegrate w/o him. There's really no need for us to diminish what we know he can be just to feel better about his trade. It's almost like some people are hoping he's damaged goods. I probably won't be a fan going forward, but I'd wish him the best as a person medically.

Except maybe it's about a billion dollar industry. The contract alone is $50M. You have a big insurance issue as well, besides the fact that the grievance could be a Supreme Court issue. Lawyers make the world go round. If you think this was your average "why isn't Burkie giving away our future situation", then you're wrong. The legal aspects of this trade were complicated. Vegas got smart, and made the move. Remember, that only one country gets to win the moon race every year. How mad would you be if WE got Eichel(5 yrs term) at trade deadline for that package?
