Just curious, but how does Vesey rate compared to Kevin Hayes from a couple of years ago? Better or worse prospect? Better or worse potential?

Better. Hayes played on a better team, that he wasn't the leading scorer of. That would be Johnny Hockey. There's a reason why Vesey won a Hobey Baker.

Biggest reason was lack of competition, Jimmy Vesey will probably be an NHL regular but I wouldn't bet the farm he'll be better than Hayes, reasons? for one he's strictly a winger, two, his shot isn't that great and three he's not very physical.

I certainly wouldn't trade Kevin Hayes for him.

And what direction is that? "Matthews notwithstanding" is a rather large caveat. It's rather difficult to win a championship without that franchise centerman. The Coyotes might find theirs, or they might not. The Leafs are much more of a sure thing.

Then add in how the Leafs have the best management money can buy. The best coach in the NHL, the best scout in the world (Hunter), the best-funded analytics department. And they've been scooping up more draft picks and more <25 free agent talent than anybody, by a mile.

I like what Chayka is doing, but he's basically taking the same approach as Leafs management but with way fewer resources.

I always thought that it's 1) achieve some success FIRST 2) brag (if one is inclined to do so...)...

I guess we will all just have to wait and see. I've seen him over the years. He lives 10 minutes from me and my kid also played same rink he did but girls side. I only saw him twice though this year live but we get Harvard games often enough on the weekends so I will check as much to watch Donato, Sherman, and a local kid Colin Blackwell. Been playing my entire life and going on my 33 or 34th year as a Bruins season ticket holder. My folks had seats since the late 40's. I been wrong before but I'm confident in my ability no disrespect to Bob, but I would go 25+ top 6.

Maybe he will suck I've read that. Put me down though first 5 year average 25/60.

I don't know about 30 and 80 but I would not be surprised if he puts up Nathan Horton numbers - and he was not a super star in my world unless we are talking overtime and the year is 2011
good enough

I could see the Rangers as a dark horse due to your reasons.

I doubt a kid who wants to play in a hockey market is going to want to go to Carolina.

Cool thanks. It looks weird to me when talking about the Penguins.

You've also said that you haven't seen anything from him that would guarantee success at the NHL level so I have a hard time believing that you've actually ever watched him play.

oh sorry, let's word that properly. "That kind of success" at NHL level.

People here are projecting him to hit Tavares/Stamkos level of points. And yes, the game has changed and 70 points is 1st line superstar forward level scoring these days. His projection of 2nd/3rd line forward falls more towards 55 points if 2nd line forward, 30+ points if 3rd line forward.

Vesey is going to the flames. Burke is working his background magic and will scoop the entire NHL

Is there something wrong in getting an asset for free?

When that means losing another asset, yes. I don't think he is good enough to lose any of our prospects who would otherwise make the team this year. He's likely a 3rd liner with 2nd line potential.

It's just hype because people like to get excited during boring times. It happens every year. The goalie who was the next one signing last year he went to Ottawa. Before that the Leafs got a guy everyone was going on about and he couldn't crack our roster and went in the Phaneuf deal.

Unless he is a promising goalie or D, then no interest ATM. Only exception is potential elite guys, which Vesey is not.

I'd say the main advantage Vesey has over K.Hayes is skating. Vesey is an excellent skater - speed, quickness and agility. Hayes mediocre skating (at best) holds him back from being a true top-6 caliber player.

Vesey is generally ranked as a top 20 prospect not in the NHL. Casey Bailey and Matt O'Connor are in no way comparable, they were never held in anything comparing the general respect scouts have for Vesey. Vesey is much more comaprable to guys like Bozak or Kevin Hayes, and even that is selling him short. He'd immediately be our 4th best prospect.

I know that another bozak would be nice, but where does he fit on the roster?

Right behind JVR and Komarov to start, then moves up into the top 6 later into the season.

The guy was ranked 14th by THN Future Watch, and 8th on TSN's top NHL affiliated prospects. A team can make room for the guy.

The fact that a team traded a third round pick for the chance to talk to him tells me he's a pretty good prospect.

That's a whole lot of opinion being passed as fact.

Best management group is debatable (Lou hasn't done squat in years, and Toronto's management group hasn't done anything yet, except tank for a 1st overall pick). Best coach is debatable. Best scout is debatable. Sabres have had just about as many draft picks as the Leafs (maybe more, not sure). Coyotes have had a bunch too. So I wouldn't say "by a mile". Not sure what under 25 free agent talent means though. A player can't turn UFA until 27 or 7 years NHL experience. If we're just talking under 25 talent, the Sabres have just as much, or maybe more. Coyotes have a whole lot of under 25 talent as well. There are other teams with lots of under 25 talent too, like Jets, Flames, Panthers etc.

I know it's probably hard to hear, Id be bummed if I heard Pastrnak or Krug hated living in this area. But it's reality.

Family friends mentioned he doesn't like living in Buffalo, views it as a bigger lowell (not the best of cities in mass...)

Will it be enough to make him leave as a UFA or hold out when he hits RFA? Time will tell, but I know for sure he would be honest with Jimmy when it comes to how he feels about living out there.

And other Mass (Twitter) "insiders" claim he hates playing for Bylsma, while you said he likes the coach. It seems like too many people in that state pretend they know everything about Eichel and his thought processes.
