Yeah you had to trade Buch now or close to now. Evidently according to Brooks they'd been trying for weeks. The one thing you couldn't do was go into the season with him and the have to either self-rent or move him out in a playoff race, both of which would be undesirable options.

Maybe the market for him just didn't develop? I don't know why that would happen, but there are always guys the league undervalues. Maybe this was one of those cases.
It's only happening because of flat cap right now.

So Reinhart get's a bit of a higher pick and wildcard goalie prospect. Seems like the market for RFAs with arbitration rights and 1 year to UFA is kind of soft. Comparatively, Drury didn't do that badly if he thinks St Louis is going to miss the playoffs next year.

If they think Blais has 20 goals in him riding shotgun to Panarin, then maybe it ends up being a pretty good deal in the long run.

I don’t know if it’s all of the Cape May brewing co. beers I’ve had today or if I’m repressing my fear of what’s to come but everything everyone is posting has been hilarious today

It’s probably the beers

I think this may be a bit too optimistic., but the Reinhart trade definitely made this one seem a lot less bad.

Blais is much closer to a solid 3rd liner than a 4th liner. 28 points in his last 76 games at 24/25 years old. With the other elements he brings, that’s valuable. The hope is probably that he can bring 30-35 points while adding that dimension long term to the organization. I really like him as a fit on the team.

I’m underwhelmed overall but that’s not an indictment on Blais.
Maybe the see him as a more physical version of Fast with better hands ? Any younger and cheaper of course.

sorry hunter gathers just saw your post, I agree

The thing I don't understand with this is if the goal is to be a "heavier", "moar toffness" team to play against why is trading away someone like Buchnevich the answer? When did Buchnevich become soft? He's strong on the boards, really good defensively and a very good PKer. If his name was Nolan Sutter he probably would have been in the running for the Selke last season.

You answered your question. He's a Russian that has skill and was drafted in the 3rd round but isn't a huge name. So people just assume he's soft. Drury probably thinks he's soft.

Why do we have NMC contracts on our most experienced wing position players that we cant move or trade with huge cap hits?
My point earlier we need to focus on centers and be deep in that position - hopefully Drury can either draft a center in 2022, or go for Eichel, but I dont know what plan B is so we speculate...

My point is the center position is really important in NHL so hopefully they figure it out.

who said he soft? Literally our last remaining memory of him in a ranger uniform is going to be him going kamikaze kid on Anthony Mantha.

He doesn’t play with any grind or lean though. Doesn’t mean he’s bad, just not his style. Don’t agree that he’s good along the boards though.

I think it's more the cap then the style of play here. The Rangers probably quite enjoyed what Buch brought to the ice, but not at $6m p/y. A winger was always going, and CK's contract made him hard to move so it almost always going to be Buch

Sam Bennett got a former 2nd rounder + a 2022 2nd. Compare Blais’ stats Pre-trade to Bennett. They’re pretty close. So his value is probably a 2nd + prospect. Drury got that plus a 2nd.
