Can LA terminate Kovalchuk's deal like the Islanders did with Kovar or is it completely different with Kovalchuk's being a 3 year deal as opposed to Kovar's deal being 1 year.

I believe that since it is a 35+ contract, even if it gets mutually terminated the Kings are stuck with the cap hit.

The only way out of it for them is to trade him.

I keep looking to see if there are hidden/whited out "smiley" emojis on some of the posts in this thread. I not going to suggest I could be a GM or I'm a good dealmaker. But some of the names and deals thrown out in this thread are incredible. I mean "holy shit, you've got to be kidding me" incredible.

The only way Kovalchuk would make sense for Boston now would be if LA takes Backes back in the deal (same term, and same AAV). Obviously that isn't happening since Backes doesn't help LA at all in any way for a rebuild and DB42 probably isn't waiving his NMC to go to LA.

Is Kovalchuk completely shutting it down this early in? He's now scoreless in his last 9 games, and as @GloryDaze4877 pointed out, played 6:20 the last game.

I would take Kovalchuk if they took Backes with zero salary retention or any other pieces, but as you said, that doesn't really help them out with a rebuild unless you subscribe to the whole "Backes' leadership is SO VALUABLE to the young players!!!!!" thought process. Which, hey, LA might given that they signed Kovalchuck to that idiotic deal with their incredibly flawed roster in the first place and thought the solution to their woes was to fire their coach...

But I truly don't think there's anything wrong with Kovy as a player right now. He was doing just fine before Willie Desjardins came in. I think it's a player who is being used improperly by a bad coach on a pretty awful team. His TOI is more of an indictment of Willie's coaching than it is of Kovalchuk as a player at this moment.

Well considering neither Panarin nor Tarasenko have any sort of trade protection at this time, seems to me they have no say in the matter.
The biggest thing that Panarin can say is the numbers 9 to 11 million. That is the most important matter.

Scary situation if there's no way to get rid of the contract. Also looking at his contract. He took $7.85M signing bonus on July 1st ($650K base Salary). He collects another $5.3M bonus on July 1 2019 ($700k Base). Anything stopping him from taking that final signing bonus money and announcing his retirement a week later, forgoing the final $4.95M and two years of playing?

Even if he retires they're stuck with the cap hit. That's why I said the only way they're getting out from under that is by trading him.

Real galaxy brained genius shit from Rob Blake.

Yeah, he'st still at 14 points in 23 games, which is a 0.61 PPG pace. He was producing at PPG pace before this slide.

Kopitar makes $10 M is 31 years old and paid through 2023-24

Ouch

DeBrusk makes less than a million

You are paying Kopitar $20 M over the time period DeBrusk makes under $2 M

And throwing in their best offensive defenseman

Pass
people balking at that number, but would anyone be hung up on paying Bergeron 10M? that's about the type of player we're talking about. we're very lucky to only be paying him 6.8

with that said, I can't see a deal for Kopitar happening without Krejci going the other way.

I'm not even sure what this means.

His next contract..... This year he would be a rental til he is signed. He has been rumored to be looking at 11 million and is probably worth at least 9.5 in the new NHL. Which if he has a smart agent he is building in signing bonuses. That means prime power play chances and top line minutes. If not then he is a complete rental and will move on. Do you see the Bruins forking out that kind of money. Will he come here and sulk like Hamilton and be happy on the second line.

I could be very wrong (please any cba experts correct me I would like to learn) but since it's only year 1 of the deal I don't think any of this matter in regards to Kovalchuk. In year 1 I don't see why they could not mutually terminate the contract? Even if they couldn't what's stopping them and Kovalchuk having a back agreement and have the Kings say he had a material breach of contract and end it that way letting him go to the KHL.

NHL CBA FAQ - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

It's the same reason why the Wings couldn't do anything with the final year of Datsyuk's contract and were forced to trade it for cap relief.

Be nice but the Kings will not do it. They want youth and speed as the are already old and experienced. We would have to add something or a few things. He would look good beside Krech and according to some LA fans is not the problem. Still his age and that contract coupled with what he already did to Nashville.

I would rather target a guy like Schenn, who would be okay playing 2nd or 3rd line minutes and be good going forward. We are getting guys back and would not mind seeing Hughes or Senyshyn get a few games in.

Oh, absolutely. I'm not suggesting the Bruins trade assets for a ticking time bomb. Any assets that the Bruins trade should be for someone who can help more longer term.

Perfectly fine with me. I'll fly to Boston and drive him to the airport to make that deal.

If they would take Backes then that would be good for us going forward. I think Krech would really like playing with Kovalchuk. I just think we need to sweeten the pot as they would be admitting they screwed up on the signing. It was a gamble for them, just like us last year with Nash. Gotta give them something of value talent and cap wise to make it even. The Cap for Kovalchuk is at 6.25 till 2021. He has a NMC this year and next and a Modified NTC, NMC the last year.

I'm surprised Pastrnak wasn't included in it as well. He has a strange fascination of dealing him.
Man that would be awful to trade Pasta, he should never come up in any trade conversation unless of course a no brainer like for McDavid, but even then I would want to hang onto Pasta to play with such a player.

Kovalchuk? Are you ****ing kidding?

Last night in the LA win over EDM, he played 6:20 for the entire game, and didn’t touch the ice in the 3rd period. It wouldn’t surprise me if they were trying to nudge him back to the KHL.

Not giving up anything to take on that deal.
Agree sometimes things work out for the best when you thought otherwise at first, missing out on Kovalchuk was a great thing for the Bruins, now Tavares would have been nice.

Trading Krug could give us three strong centres: Bergeron, Krejci, Schenn

And three strong wingers:
Marchand, Pasta, Debrusk

Pair them up, add a support player (Heinen/Bjork/Nordy) and forwards is suddenly deep

Heinen Bergy Pasta
Marchand Schenn Bjork
Nordstrom Krejci Debrusk
Wagner Kuraly Backes

Chara McAvoy
Moore Carlo
Grz Miller

No, I understand perfectly why it wouldn't happen. I'm just saying the only way I would trade to acquire Kovy is to get rid of a negative value asset.

But as a thought experiment, if they just did a one-for-one swap, at least Backes' contract gives them cap relief if they buy him out, something they can't do with Kovy. The deal works out such that the Bruins incur more risk by receiving the asset that would be harder to get rid of if things go south, but have more potential reward if Kovy continues to produce. The Kings get a (negligbly) safer option for less potential reward.

I like this a lot

Krug is one of our only pseudo-healthy D, but let's move him.

I don't move Krug UNLESS McAvoy comes back and shows he is at 100% and able to produce points. I also wait and see how Chara and Carlo are doing. If their health is in question, you simply cannot move a quality D like Krug.

Even if we had a fully healthy D corps - I question the logic behind trading a key contributor on D for a guy like Schenn. If we really need a 3C, then make a lesser trade for a 3C sending futures. Keep the core intact and contend with the players that have delivered for you. We know Krug is a contributor. Why move him now?

Seriously. Schenn is a fine player but he's not someone you move a player like Krug for. Schenn is also already 27. This would be an extremely short-sighted move.

I like Coyle, but if the B’s acquired him, it would probably be with the idea that he would play RW with Krejci and DeBrusk? He’s got the build of guys that DK typically likes on his wing, but I don’t see Coyle every night, so I’m not sure how good a fit he would be stylistically. Looking at his FO numbers, he’s only been over 50% for the year once and he’s not a full time center. He’s been around 500-600 draws tops which puts him in 4th line C territory, not Top 9.

I guess it would depend on the ask.
A lot of misinformation on Coyle, here. He does play a lot of C a this point, and his FO numbers are good. He has been good ever since the linesman started cracking down on FO cheating...Koivu gets thrown out of the circle every second FO, it seems...Charlie was never a good cheater.
- Coyle is an above average skater
- Coyle is physical. Immensely strong. Just not the type of guy who does cheap shots, or post whistle scrums. He most definitely can do the "dirty work". I think the face wash stuff is overrated myself...
- His offense comes and goes. Right now he is on a third line(Koivu and Staal playing #1 and #2 C, respectively)with Eriksson -Ek/Foligno and Greenway. GREAT checking line, but not the best linemates if you are looking for offensive help.
- Coyle can and does play a good C. Can also play RW. Some opine that he is a better RW'er, but I like him better at C, because he can use his skating and physical skills more. He produces better when he plays RW because then he is playing on a better line, with Koivu or Staal at C, and either Granlund or Parise on the other wing. That's a big step up from Marcus (the wrong) Foligno.
- his 3.2M cap hit, his ability to play C, and the fact that he is the only RHS on the Wild top 9 makes it highly unlikely he gets moved. Nino is far more likely to be trade bait.
