Some perspective, If I am a GM and I hear that most of the Bruins top players are out I KNOW their season is in jeopardy.

I offer them some solutions at 10x the inflated price.

Price is driven by demand. GMs are predatory, they don't hand each other liferafts. They hand each other anchors.

We can't just ask Sweeney to wave a wand and make a C and RW appear without mortgaging our future by paying in our young talent.

In NHL video games you can make trades with a balance of talent. That rarely happens in the NHL because the circumstances play a huge role in price.

Yes and no.

Certain teams probably would try to bend the B’s over in any deal. So, don’t deal with those teams. We now have four teams (LA, CHI, STL, and EDM) fire their coaches. This is step 1 in the process. Step 2 is making deals if Step 1 doesn’t get the desired results.

There are now teams (and GM’s) out there that are just as concerned with “saving” their seasons as much as Boston is. I would look to these teams first when trying to make a deal.

Also, the B’s had needs before the injuries (2nd line RW and/or 3rd line C). Bergeron’s injury complicates this, but doesn’t really change the needs. They aren’t going to trade for a 1C to replace Bergeron being out 4-6 weeks. They can still try to trade for a guy that slots in as the 2C behind Krejci right now and then moves back to the 3C spot when 37 returns.

Dom mentioned Namestnikov. He’s a guy I would have interest in. I also like Sobotka, but not sure if BUF would trade in division? If it’s me, I’m looking for a competent guy who is going to help me now, not cost an arm and a leg, and not block Stud or T-Freddy (although that may be getting a bit ahead of myself).

They had 112 points and were beat up against Tampa

That they went into it as bridesmaids is a joke or have a bridesmaid approach

Disagree.

They went into this season behind TB and Toronto on paper and per national expectations. And fwiw, the hockey world ALSO got to see our kids last year, so they’re no secret. You choosing to be particularly high on nearly every prospect certainly provides you with your optimism, but you can not expect all others to see it that way too.

They would need older guys like Chara, Krejci, Backes, etc. to all hold up, with stars remaining healthy, and kids hitting the accelerator in their growth during the season to be a true contender. Could everything come together? Sure. They were a very good team after all last year when everything broke their way until the very end. But that doesn’t strike me a team looking to make a strong push.

Now if you don’t like “bridesmaid” as a term because it feels resigned, fine. That’s fair. But they didn’t come in as a favorite, and given their current injuries, I feel strongly now is not the time to all of a sudden adopt a competitively aggressive approach.

I’d like to see that ...

But in his/her defense it doesn’t mean history will repeat itself.

PS I agree these next 3 weeks are imperative for Bjork

uh, why? there was a reason why Riley Nash wasn't retained.... Nash was blocking who in the organization, who has taken a shot at the 3rd Center....

I think the reason was cap management... but as the shifting sand shifts sometimes decesions that were 48-52 at one point might become 54-46 with new influencers

even with Bergeron playing mvp hockey we have limped to the 1/4 mark of the season in 5th place in our division and out of the playoffs.

In fairness I actually was way off as well

I had the Bruins at 105 and third seed when they ended up 112 and second

Apparently I wasn’t that optimistic

He's something like 0.9 PPG since 2015, so he's up there. He also has one of the best defensive sticks in the league, practically Bergeron level. This is what separates him from his peers. As others have said, if he was in a larger market he'd receive greater recognition.

Just quickly diving into some top level numbers and not going crazy, I'd put Barkov in the top 15. Like I said, as some of these other guys slow down or retire, he'll eventually get in the top 10. Right now I just don't see him as the 10th (or better) best Centerman in the NHL.

I hope they don't do something drastic

Just looking at this upcoming year's UFA class, there is a lot of talent up for grabs, more than I can remember in any years past

If you ignore the top 3 which probably won't happen due to money issues (Karlsson, Panarin, Bob)

Duchene
Stone
Lee
Gourde (edit: oops he signed already)
Pavelski
E. Staal
Eberle
Skinner
K. Hayes
Simmonds
Silfverberg
Nelson
Brassard
Dzingel
Nyquist

If they were willing to offer JT 11 mil they would probably offer one of those middle ground guys some money as well

This isn’t the time for the Bruins to be making trades, in my opinion. With the amount of injuries, and with the word of Bergeron, Sweeney isn’t in a position of strength. Dealing from desperation is usually when mistakes are made.

Instead, the Bruins need to stay the course and see if they can stay afloat amongst the injuries— show opposing teams that they will be just fine and don’t need outside help. Inside the organization, they still have options including Cave, who’s on emergency recall, and Trent Frederic, who’s back on the ice today in Providence.

Etc etc etc. Teams aren’t trading. Sweeney dealing with a boatload of injuries which doesn’t help his trade market. Team is in playoff spot, time to see what the kids can do. Sit back and just enjoy it

Question for the cba savvy...

If they sign a player mid-season, does he have to go thru waivers?

Kovar, Stempniak, Winnik... maybe they can bridge the injuries by signing a guy or two.

Winnik had a good preseason, I was hoping they’d sign him for the 4th line. He looked better than Acciari and Wagner and he might be a better center than Kuraly. I think that ship has sailed and if they change the 4th line it’ll be with Cave.

If there was a time to sign Kovar, it’s now. When Nordstrom is a mainstay on the 2nd line, you might as well get creative.

Winnik signed in Switzerland, though I'm sure he has some type of NHL out clause in there.

Guys I would love to see in Boston?

Dylan Larkin - 4 more yrs after this season @ $6.1m
Taylor Hall - 1 more yr @ $6
Sean Monahan - 4 more yrs @ $6.4

Would be tough to pull off a trade for any of these guys, but I could see a package for Monahan IF Calgary felt like they either (a) could make serious playoff noise or (b) totally fell apart.

Can't see NJ retaining Hall once he's a UFA...he's got to want more than to play in Jersey, no?

Orr I said TH's agent and he said at the draft he wanted to play for the Bruins so..

This is the perfect time for the kids to gel and mesh and keep this team moving forward. Remember the 2004 Redsox and the bunch of idiots winning the World Series?

There is a ton of talent. I'm content standing pat and not making any low value or rental type of deal just to make the playoffs for a round or if lucky two.

Give the kids a chance to learn and win as a group. They can do it!

Idiots v2

Stand pat seems like the obvious answer right now. The only way Don has a chance of not getting fleeced in a deal is if he deals with another desperate team, ie Oilers, Kings, Blues or Pens at this moment. I wouldn’t hold my breath. Let the kids show what they’ve got.
