Pinto was being sheltered, as he should have been, since he's a rookie who missed all of last year with an injury. He wasn't being asked to take faceoffs against Matthews or Tavares.
This is just plain wrong, his faceoffs weren't sheltered, 3 against Matthews and 3 against Tavares, 5 of the 6 being taken in the DZ so more than half his faceoffs against them and he won 67% against them. Giroux is the only guy that took more against those two.

Norris only took two against those guys, same with Tkachuk, Stutzle 4. Kastelic 5.

The Bergeron line isn't the Bruins' top line. He's playing with Zacha and DeBrusk. Good wingers, but not exactly a "gulf" in talent. People are thinking it's still Marchand-Bergeron-Pastrnak. It's not.
I agree our 4th line is a better matchup against the BOS "2nd" line; I only saw after my post how BOS is currently using their players. However, I still feel like the point of my post as a general observation of lining up our 4th line against most top lines isn't lost.

It looks good at first glance but I'm pretty sure that other teams' coaches will be happy to have Kastelic, Kelly and Watson on for first line (5-on-5) minutes instead of the likes of Giroux, Tkachuk, Debrincat, Norris, Batherson and Stützle.

At some point you have to get your scorer's out there. The likelihood that the Kastelic line will outscore a line like Matthews's or Bergeron's is very small. Most nights they might hold them to 1 goal or on exceptional nights keep them off the scoresheet. Hardly ever will they actually outscore top lines.

Here's hoping one of our top 3 lines establishes itself as a true 2-way threat and we can roll with them against top lines, because playing the Kastelic (or Brassard/Gambrell) line for the most 5-on-5 minutes will not work out for us.

I don't think that's going to happen. Mark Kastelic is averaging 7:48 of EV TOI through two games. Stützle is at 16:57.

Being able to play shifts against the Bergeron line (or Matthews line, or another top line) does not in any way mean ice time will be taken away from the top players.

I think people are getting carried away with a throwaway comment to assume that Kastelic and Watson will get 18 minutes tonight against Bergeron.

Well, they haven't been good so there's that...

Pinto would get eaten alive at the dot against Bergeron too
What better way to learn the game than going head to head against someone who is the pinnacle of what you might want to be.

I mean, he did well against Tavares and Matthews who are both good, so what do I know. I think he's going to be one of the better faceoff guys in the league later in his career, and adding Giroux will hopefully help fast tract that as he learns from one of the best.

Bergeron feasts on just about everybody though, I don't really think it matters who faces off against him, but ideally someone who will at least not lose clean

My mistake. So I suppose the narrative of "Kastelic was being used as a shutdown guy" wasn't true against the Leafs and we shouldn't panic because I'm sure Pinto and other guys will get plenty of ice vs. Bergeron tonight.

Going through the shift chart from Saturday:

Kastelic line - ~10 shifts vs Matthews
Pinto line - ~8 shifts vs Matthews
Stützle line - ~6 shifts vs Matthews
Norris line - ~7 shifts vs Matthews

Team effort, for the most part. I'd expect the same tonight.

I agree. I don't think DJ is going to try to match up Kastelic against Bergeron.

My response is that having a line like that be your "shutdown" line, that plays against the top lines, is going to shut down your team just as much as the opposition. Probably more.

I don't think DJ will actually go down that path for precisely that reason. I'm not convinced he's a great, or even good, coach but he's not that dumb.

I mean, DJ literally said they would not have hard matchups, so yeah, any narrative that Kastelic would be matched up against Bergeron is likely wrong, but Kastelic did in fact get matched up against Matthews (not by our choice since it was an away game) in the minutes he got, of his 8:30 of 5v5 time, over 6 mins was against the Matthews, Marner and Bunting line.

My guess is DJ will have no issues rolling the lines regardless of who is on the ice so Kastelic will almost certainly see icetime against Bergeron and likely Pastrnak too.

Kastelic is absolutely massive. Whatever it states for his height and weight, it's way off. If he can be a shutdown type, that would be wicked...Just needs to stay on his feet. I find it odd that he often is the one getting knocked off the puck during battles.

And he did pretty well in those minutes. People are really underestimating Kastelic. He's a good player. By the end of the year, I think he has a legit shot at being at 13-15 minute a night guy. It's not a disaster if he's on the ice against good lines.

Let's hope he plays our best offensive guys on the PP
Cat and Giroux have less TOI in the 2 1st games then what they are used to

I said this before (Can't remember if here, twitter, or reddit lol) but I'll say it again:

I have 0 idea why we are running 8 forwards on the PP... I would understand a little better if the 8th forward was Joseph... but it's Motte...

I would rather have 4-1 on PP2 with Sanderson, and go 3-2 on PP1 with Chabot-Brannstrom.

we have the D options, I think it would also throw a wrench in opponents plans to cover out powerplay setups if we have 2 units that set up multiple different ways.

Motte doesn't have the offence to play PP. guy had 17 points in 73 games last year (incl. playoffs)

Not to mention ttranslate the chemistry of the 5on5 of the 2 1st line onto the PP

Boston have been playing very well.

It should be interesting.

Predictions?

Relax fellas and gals. Ottawa will smite our issues scoring goals and put up 3, count 'em, THREE individual hat-tricks.

Boston 10 Ottawa 9.

Finally finished work...getting the battle gear on...see you fine folk at the game!!! Get there early and avoid traffic. GO SENS GO

I think they giving away scarfs and cowbells to all

Take it with a grain of salt, but I bet against the Sens the first two games, but bet heavily on the Sens tonight. The odds yesterday were very good (-110). The odds have already drifted to -135 for the Sens today, which means I'm not the only one expecting a win.

It shouldn't be a surprise. Boston is playing their 3rd game in 4 nights. The Sens are at home and are well rested, and are antsy to get going after 2 close loses.

Things are as stacked in our favor as you can expect. I will be very disappointed if we don't win.

Not sure what you're complaining about.

Fun stat. Kastelic with just 1 hit on Saturday and 0(!) hits on Thusday. Second lowest to Brannstrom in Hits per game this season. Who does he think he is? 😂
