For the guys who see prospects more than I do, what prospect(s) would you move in a deadline deal? Player(s) who might move the needle for some teams but you think might not be a good pro. Thanks

As much as trade deadline affected them in a positive way, the impact on Defenceman Frederic Brunet is on another level. The Bruins selected Brunet in the fifth round – 132nd overall – at the 2022 NHL Entry Draft and it just goes to show that when you surround a talented player with other talented players, great things can happen.

Let’s get one thing clear off the top: No, I am not suggesting by any means that Fabian Lysell will turn into the hockey player David Pastrnak is.

Here is what I am asking:

Pastrnak has become the player that at least 22 teams are wishing they hadn’t passed on. I’m sure the Oilers are happy they have Leon Draisaitl and maybe the Panthers are happy with Aaron Ekblad. Beyond that I think most General Managers wish they had a do-ever.

In three, four or five years, how many GM’s will be saying the same thing about Lysell, if any? I think it’s safe to assume that the Sabres are happy with Owen Power and the Kraken are happy with Matty Beniers. Ditto with the Ducks and Mason McTavish. But there are many more chapters to be written in this book including the Lysell chapter.

How much would one typically discount someone like Brunet for being 7 months away from being 20 years old, in the Q?

The Ducks took Tristan Luneau in the second (I believe in the same draft as Brunet), but Luneau turned 18 a few days ago (and is a better shooter).

Obviously Luneau is a much better prospect. I'm just curious by how much. Etienne Morin is having a similar season in the Q, and he's 17! Projected to go in the 2nd.

Clearly Brunet has to play in Providence next year?

Brunet was taken in the 5th round. Like I said, it's a guy you take a chance on in that spot.

I understand he was taken in the 5th. I'm just curious how much we need to temper expectations when it's someone almost 20 putting up those numbers. Have we had a prospect in the last few decades that did something similar that we can compare to?

Luneau is only 5 months younger than Brunet. Brunet was extremely young as a first time eligible.

Im glad koppanen is getting some play up on the big club. Seems like a guy whos been patient down in providence, played well, played to his strengths the whole time and has been rewarded. Good on him, passed over some others that have been up before to get his first shot

I don't know if you read what I had written. Since you are making a comparison to a second round pick. I tend to think you didn't.

When you are drafting in the second round, you are looking for players with a pretty good chance of making the NHL. When you are drafting in the fifth, you are taking a guy with virtually no chance of making it. Like I wrote, he is precisely the type of player you look for in this case, because if he does develop, then he has a chance. I can guarantee there isn't a hockey pundit that saw this type of offence from Brunet, even at this stage, so yes there is some reason to get excited because he is exceeding expectations.

He wasn't in a good situation in Rimouski and like I also wrote "it just goes to show that when you surround a talented player with other talented players, great things can happen." And since the trade he is recorded points at a pace that hasn't been seen in the Q in over 20 years.

Does it mean he'll make it? No, but there is reason for optimism and to get excited.

Anyone out there see this type of offense coming from Jackson Edward pre draft?

So, I had some free time today and pulled out my QMJHL stuff and found the most comparable player for you, not in terms of the type of player, but age, draft position, production and so on. That player is KEITH YANDLE.

Yandle was selected 105th overall in 2005
Brunet was selected 132nd overall in 2022

Yandle turned 19 on Sept 9 following his draft
Brunet turned 19 on Aug 21 following his draft making him 19 days older than Yandle

Prior to the 2021-2022 season, Yandle was the last defenceman to record 80 points in a season (84 points) in the QMJHL. That was his 19 year old season (2005-06)
Brunet is on pace for 72 points (brought down with his time with Rimouski) but based on his time with Victoriaville he will hit 80 points.

There are others, but Yandle is the most comparable in every category.

That doesn't mean he will turn into Yandle, but yeah we can be a little bit excited.

I know I'm late to the Brunet talk but hypothetically he could do an overage year if need be,wouldn't be the end of the world if that happens and not a bad plan B
Also it's possible though unlikely they could place him in the USHL to work on his D, again not a bad plan B
As if today I have some concern he'll struggle for playing time in Providence ,that could change as training camp is a ways out

Credit where credit is due. Love the idea of the USHL because his defensive game will develop better there. But do you see a team taking him on in his 20-year-old season?

I would love it if the Bruins can force a move to the London Knights or Vancouver Giants, but movement between the 3 leagues is near impossible.

Curious on your thoughts of sending him to Maine in the ECHL for a year. I guess it would mean signing his ELC a year early though. Not that it would impair anything for the team.

I just spent two hours on the phone with our boy Dan talking a whole lot of hockey stuff.

Anyway, he's going to ask you about Jake Schmaltz to see if we are on the same page about him. I had hopes for him a season ago, but pretty disappointed this season.
Whole team has been off, multiple injuries,a funky virus that ran through their locker room, team's a mess this year, even Riese Gaber's numbers aren't great
But Schmaltz..yeah I hope it's just a sophomore slump, he's still a killer at the dot but more was expected

The ECHL option? it's viable
Certainly not my first choice but it's a good compromise if Brunet wants to turn pro and Providence is D heavy again
That could be the right move
