One of the best rookies in Providence this year is Merkulov, signed as a College FA after his Freshman year at Ohio St. I believe he is second in scoring on a very good team.
Not having early draft choices will not kill a successful team as bottom of the 1st and second round picks are not surefire NHLers. Sometimes you get lucky, Pasta, but most below the top 10 area crapshoot.(with 2015 being the complete aborted outlier, except for Debrusk, even then we weren't sure for awhile)

All im saying is if the only place you can get players is college free agency and later in the draft, its not a recipe to continue to keep a high value prospect pool well stoked. So what they have now is likely the best players theyll have in their system in 2025 with no significant additions in the next 2 years unles the recoup assets later on

Not like their drafting of the 1st and second rounds has been so astounding over the Sweeny years.
If we wind up sucking, we'll trade for high draft choices down the road.
5-10 years from now is a long time and a lot can happen.
Worry less, enjoy what you have!

What percentage of their upper draft choices have been? Charlie Mc and Pasta, that's all. Not a good argument.
Their current crop looks great in Juniors and in college, but so did Studnacka,
Seguin, hamilton, debrusk also qualify.

So did studnicka? So do almost all of them. Ive said it before, Junior and college production means very little in terms of an indicator of nhl level success. However, a lack of junior or college production is an indicator of future nhl failure. The fact our prospects are doing well in amateur leagues just means i havent written them off yet. If they were floundering or not producing at at least close to a PPG pace in junior or college, im pretty wary of their “prospects” as a prospect

Hamilton is soft, glad he's gone. Seguin was a bad, bad trade. What did they expect? The kid was a 19yo millionaire with an overactive libido. He would have been worth keeping and letting him grow up.

Debrusk was a playoff stud in Juniors(as was Marchand). Since Cassidy's removal he looks like the kid from year 2. That Kadri hit knock him back quite a bit, but he seems to be back and better than ever.

Your concerns aren't unfounded, but under the conditions of "one last ride", you HAVE to go for it.

I don't think we will be as bad over the next 5 years as some. Especially with that D and goalie tandem. Pasta, Debrusk, Zacha, Frederic, Coyle not so much for his price tag. If we get Bertuzzi and Orlov to resign and back fill with good young bottom 6 for checking. We should be competitive.
Outside of 2019 we've been just another good, not great team.

Oh im not saying im not stoked about this team. Im also not saying i think they shouldnt have made these moves. I love the moves. All im saying is the prospect pool isnt getting any deeper now, we got what we got. Only path to long term success is if what they got are good. Lysell, lohrei, poitras, harrison, merkolov etc. lets hope they are good because if they arent, bad times in a few years

Fa la la la la, live for today, cause tomorrow may never come.

Bergy's taught them(Pasta, McA, Lindy, Zacha, Debrusk, the future C's and A's) how to run a room, with success and a good foundation, players will want to come here. In 2 years the cap is supposedly going up quite a bit. >90mil.
Take a breath and enjoy what we have now. The future is not that dark.

I think Sweeney will move out a few above-water contracts for draft picks in the off season and re-sign the new Bertuzzi and Orlov. I think Hall and Grzelcyk are the two most likely to move. For example:

Hall for 2nd and 4th rd picks
Grzelcyk for 3rd rd pick

Bertuzzi - re-signed for $5.25 cap hit
Orlov - re-signed for $4.75 cap hit [note, this would likely require significant term]

This does not get us our first rounders back, but at least we would have meaningful picks that may develop into important players.

I've already emailed the official scorer in the OHL. It is clear that Poitras set up the empty net goal for an assist. Poitras is number 19 and they gave it to number 16 and they evidence clearly shows it was number 19 and number 16 was on the bench. Yeah, empty net goal, but his speed beat out the icing and it was a great pass. Ontario Hockey League – Official Site of the Ontario Hockey League

I know it's trivial, but that would be assists in 12 straight games giving him the longest assist streak in the OHL this season and his effort alone on the goal is worth notifying the league they made a mistake.
