No matter what else, that's all we ever hoped for.

Amen. He was the most successful Captain in the 49 year history of the team by a country mile, and will always be remembered for that regardless of what the future holds for him. Just because he's a shell of himself now takes nothing away from how awesome he was for the team when he was in his prime. I can't thank him enough for being part of a team that did (twice!) what no one else was able to get done.

Not that I really expected them to full on 'announce' such a thing, but still

They'll have to address it at some point.

I only find it sad sentimentally. This is a good move overall. Give new life to the team and maybe even Brown. Instead of him having to looking at everyone's game in case he needs to talk to refs he can just focus on his game.

Also I think this means Brown is still in LA this year. I will be more sad if/when he is shipped out.

Exactly how I feel. It's a little sad because of what he accomplished with that C, but probably a good move for the team right now. I'm really hoping it re-energizes his game.

Sad because of what he accomplished with this org and 2 cups...but maybe the right move. Whether on purpose or not, have to wonder if he is pissed off enough to either request a trade or be open to one...haha if DL can find a taker with that contract...easier said then done but with that limited no trade he has, and it was speculated that he wouldn't want to leave, move his family etc, wonder if this has any influence of whether he would want to stay or be open to be moved....will be interesting to watch for sure...

Wouldn't be terribly shocking, this has taken far too long for them to get a deal done pre-July 1st.

Yeah, I was always 50-50 on him returning. Goes down every week he doesn't sign. He wasn't taking fewer than 6 years and he wasn't taking fewer than $6 million. He's won nothing with the Kings. Dean wasn't going to bend and use loyalty as the reason why he gave him an outrageous contract.

not really sad, it's good to change management, team structure, or to pass along the torch to another player to change things up

you think Thornton is crying now?

Brown is making over 5m a year and he doesn't have the results to back it

if you and me don't produce at our jobs, you think our employer would give us 3 years of chances because we were employee of the month in 2012?

we should stop feeling sorry for these athletes

he should consider himself lucky that he's being paid that much to do so little

So if mayor is right......Lucic is gone.

For all of his loyalty, when this team hasn't won, he's let guys go. Even Sekera, who they gave up that 1st for. He probably could've brought Penner, who was a big part of 2012, back for cheap after 2013, but didn't. Williams went after last year, even though he meant more to this team than most players.

Had the team, and Lucic individually, had a better showing in the playoffs, maybe that changes things. But with this whole Brown situation, it all seems to be a little more up in the air at this point.

Seems like they tried to get Sekera back but weren't giving him the NTC Edmonton gave him. Also, Sekera made it sound like he didn't think he fit in well in LA.

Williams was pushed out in favor of Lucic for the same price who is younger and a bit more offensive.

This is actually shaping up to be an interesting off season. Haven't had one of those in a while!

Yep, this was going to happen anyway the timing is all about getting him to waive...

Friedman mentioned Brown has no agent. He probably expected to just sail to the end of his career in LA. If he hires one, we know why.

Right, but Lombardi didn't go the extra mile the way he did for Quick, Brown, Kopitar, Richards, Stoll, and Greene when their contracts were in question. Let Mitchell go after winning, which might have been his toughest move, but Muzzin and Martinez had to be signed, and Regehr and Voynov were still around.

Friedman generally knows what he's taking about, I think he's very trusted by teams he contacts. And I agreed with most of what he said. The team telling Brown on Monday and giving him 4 days for it to sink in before the 'media' leaks it. And I think he was correct in that Brown will now get an agent and give a list of teams. It would be better for him, esp given the caustic relationship with Sutter, to move on. IN 2014 at the Olympics one of his teammates said Brown told him Sutter took his confidence away and you look at the yrs since and his numbers going down reflect that. And the mayor alluded to that in the interview, something that a Sportsnet reporter hinted at when the Kings were eliminated. Anyway, a fresh start new coach, new team, new leaf.

And Brown wasn't Sutter's choice for Captain, he is Kopi guy all the way, and perhaps that was part of his bargaining chip in the contract negotiations. That the team needed a new direction, and he wanted that to start with Kopi being the Captain.

I can't see Brown remaining, and I hope he finds success if he does leave, and help another team to find the path to the Silver Cup. Good teammate, good leader, good work ethic and perhaps new wind in his sails.

If Lucic is gone, wonder if it is Lombardi deciding to allocate the money elsewhere of if the weak playoff showing led to Lucic not taking as much of a discount.

If they don't win the Cup in '14 with Gaborik playing out of his mind, there is a great chance Gaborik just goes to the highest bidder, much like Sekera did. Could be looking at the same with Lucic: Can't blame him either.

As for Brown: I don't want him to leave. I want his contract to leave, but not him. Can't have it both ways, unfortunately. I would of liked him to be like Dave Taylor but that just doesn't happen in this era.

If Sutter took his confidence away, then who was coaching the team when he played the best hockey of his life in 2012 and then crushed the shortened '13 season? I find it hard to believe Brown would say/believe that: it's a cop out.

Edit: Unless "confidence" is Brown's nickname for Kopitar.

If they can get Ladd for a 5 year, $5 million a season deal or McGinn for a 4 year, $4 million a season deal, I'll take those over Lucic at 6-7 years, $6 million a season.

Agree on Brown. I would be incredibly sad when/if he's traded. I don't think any Kings fan hates Brown, the player. We all just hate the contract.

Lombardi's making sure he has the cap to sign Yandle to a 7X7!!!

Brown isn't going anywhere. Kings won't retain on him for 6-7 more years before possibly losing him in the expansion for free. The upside is Brown's the Lucic replacement!
