Really pissed that I forgot the B-Isles played a 10:30 am game. I was up at 7:30 and would have gone up to Bridgeport. Missed out on an AHL-NHL doubleheader.

Isles beat Lehigh Valley 4-1.
Holmstrom, Andreoff, Brown, Kubiak with the goals. Schneider got the start.

I believe that this is now Holmstroms career high in points now? also when did the AHL start doing games during the morning???

The Sound Tigers have been doing school trip games for years. There are 2 more on the schedule this season. Several other teams do morning games as well.

i've never heard of this until now

Pretty common around the AHL, I think they bring the Spongebob-type mascots out for the kids usually. I think the players hate that start time, but liked having a decently filled arena in some spots.

Happy to hear Holmstrom scored and the team won. Would be even nicer to also see Koivula, Durandeau, Jenkins or Bolduc hit the scoresheet rather than AHL vets.

Good result nonetheless. I’ll call this progress in an otherwise lackluster year for the franchise as a whole.

Koivula, Bolduc and Durandeau all had assists in the game.

Koivula is 2nd on the team in scoring IIRC.

My point was more about goal scoring but it’s fair to say that Koivula has had a bounce back season.

Even so, his production this year is nearly identical to what he did 3 years ago at Bridgeport and his brief cup of coffee on the Island didn’t turn my head.

A prospect not scoring a goal every game seems like an odd complaint to me, especially in a game where they put up a point and the team won, but all right. I don't know how realistic of a bar that is for a defenseman and forwards drafted in the 4-6th round, though.

Fo those in the know- Does Holmstrom have the tools to play for the big club eventually? Yes, I wasn't crazy about where we drafted him, but he is our prospect and of course we all want him to do well. If the big club keeps struggling and the team looks different by the trade deadline, I would be interested to see how he would do on JGP's wing for a few games.

Thanks in advance

He has the tools, but he gets knocked off the puck too easily still. He needs to focus on getting stronger this offseason.

I think he will eventually replace Bailey as a left shot playmaker who plays RW.

I said it the second it happened, that it was a HORRIBLE pick, and that he would spend the majority of his career in the minors or Europe. He’s done absolutely nothing to make me think my prediction will be wrong. Just a brutal pick.

7 of the guys I would’ve taken instead of him have each had a taste of NHL action. Hell the Swede I wanted instead of him, Nils Hogland has played 101 games in the NHL and is 3rd in goals for that draft class.

Considering Holmstrom’s trajectory thus far I have to say that you’re wildly optimistic.

Hope you’re right.

He still has the ugly word potential but if the internal brass aren’t high on him, they’d be better served to trade him soon and get a suboptimal return rather than having him wither on the vine.

It’s a bit early to give up on him, no? He’s only 20 playing in a mens league. Just because he’s been in the minors three seasons doesn’t really mean much. The AHL isn’t really a league for teenagers.

At 20, Bellows had 19 points in 73 games. Holmstrom has 19 points in 39.

I’m not giving up on him. I’m a fan after all.

Just laying out the stats. He’ll be 21 in 3 months. Not old but not a baby either.

I just pointed out that expectations of him replacing a top 6 player like Bailey are optimistic.

If Lou and his scouts believe he has untapped potential then ride it out. If they think otherwise then it’s best to move him before the rest of the league figures that out.

My comparison to Bailey is absolutely stylistically, but also developmentally. Bailey was rushed because of the lack of depth the organization had at the time, now the organization has the luxury of letting player develop physically in the minors for as long as needed.

Bailey didn’t has his first 50+ point season until 10 years after his draft year. I can’t help but think being rushed slowed and impeded his development, and that is exactly what they are trying to avoid with Holmstrom.

Should they have drafted someone more NHL ready based on where the big club’s window is? That’s a very strong argument, but you can’t force Holmstrom into that if he’s not ready. That’s how you get ten seasons of frustrating ~30 point play and damage development for good.

Bailey also flat out dominated with his short time in the AHL… Holmstrom has not. Now he is still underage at the AHL level at 20, but Koivula put up big numbers at 20.

Simon may be an NHLer in a couple of years, but I do not see him have the offensive output as a Bailey.

At best top 9 winger in the mold of Lehkonen.

Given that Tomasino and McMichael, the 2 players picked right after Holmstrom are playing in the NHL and contributing, it is not unrealistic to expect Holmstrom to be on the team next season. If he isn't. The Scouts that picked him ahead of these 2 guys need to explain why they passed on them to pick Holmstrom.

It's a pick that really pisses me off still to this day. I hope he makes something of himself, but this team needed centers, we had 2 right there for us and we reached for a project winger who was injured. it's a giant head scratcher and hard to understand given the scouts are supposed to be paid to know more than us, but right now...it's looking bad.

I am not quite there just yet, but next season given Simon will have had 3 AHL seasons to become comfortable with the NA game. If he is not knocking at the door by then to make the team, yes, I think the scouts that chose him over those 2 players should be rightfully scrutinized.
