Post-Game Talk: Brick WOLL FTW ! Leafs WIN in OT

We played very well despite still showing concerns with our D. Nice to see Knies and Domi give us some depth scoring. But the reason we won this game was Woll. I still say he’ll be our 1A very soon.

Matthews with a good game but atrocious faceoff percentage and he couldn’t score again. No points now in the past 3 games.

Once again, if Reaves doesn’t hit in the first period to get us going like he did in game 1-2, why the hell is he on this team?

NHL goaltenders are expected to make stops like that. I don't know why the defense is blamed for not getting a save... just one. Even the 2nd goal he had the biggest 5 hole ever. The 2 Kucherov goals there was no traffic, just a one timer. But yeah defense, rah rah rah. We can't always blame the defense every time a goal goes in... that's pretty insane.

They didn't play all that different when Woll went in and I would say they were pretty good defensively. Very little odd man rushes, very little hemmed in their zone. TBL also had PPs and he made the saves.

Marners offensive game relies heavily on risky passes... When they are successful they are "magic" but when they don't, they are opportunities for the opponent. In the season they're more successful than playoffs because less people give a %$&# in the season.

There's a good reason Marner has about 5 giveaways that have less to goals against in elimination games while the other big 3 have about 1 amongst them all.

The benefit does not outweigh the price paid.

Sammy will get his game back I'm sure but right now, Woll is the man. I don't know if this Domi-Knies connection is legit but that was one hell of a 3rd period from those two. Marners timing isn't quite there yet. All in all, I thought if nothing else, this game showed some great signs.

two of the goals were faceoff losses that were moved to Kucherov and blasted. What precisely was the defense supposed to do. You need your goaltender to save one of the two at least.

I mean the first one was PP with a perfect shot from Kuch, far side just over the pad foot and half off the ice, that a goal scorers goals. The second one, the Leafs should have been fine on numbers, but JT and I think Brodie both bit on a drop pass off the entry and let a guy go clear to the front to split the wickets on a cross ice feed, and yes you’d want the save on number three but again, PP cross ice pass labelled top corner from Kuch. Hung out to dry.

I don’t really think any of the goals were completely terrible but at some point you just need a save. We have seen plenty of games where the other teams goalies made saves on difficult shots.
Woll gave us saves and Sammy didn’t tonight. It’s that simple.

Agreed.

Neither were hung out to dry. One was awful, the other was at least good. That's what good teams need... is good goaltending.

Don’t get on me here guys lol.. Woll was better and Sammy gotta get at least one of those, you’d hope two. But they weren’t stupid weak, that’s all.

Allowing shots = hung out to dry apparently.

There was no breakdown whatsoever that lead to either Kucherov goal. Maybe you’d like to get a block on one of them, but Samsonov had clear view of both shots.

The second Kucherov goal a better shot than the first imo, but they were both good. Neither one was unsaveable though imo

If Marner is such and exceptional defensive player and passer... Why isn't he a center?

If he was put into the center, he would fail miserably over the physical aspect of the center defensive role.

I didn’t even notice he was there until halfway through the game.

I agree that they weren’t terrible goals. But good goalies makes saves they maybe shouldn’t be able to. We needed some of that tonight from Sammy and really he hasn’t given us that yet this year.

No, no they weren’t un-savable . How about this then, hung out to dry on second goal, couple of goal scorers goals from Kuch on 1st and 3rd goals on the PP? Fair enough.

Did not come here to get in to defend Sammy debate lol.. just didn’t think goals were unconscionably weak as to declare career over. I’m moving on here.

Wow something to build from. Woll should have the net for the next couple of games for sure. Sammy played like he has gambling debts.

Matthews should have had at least 1 tonight maybe a couple. Team passing isn't crisp lots of room for improvement. Hopefully Domi also builds from this. Looed terrible again tonight until he didn't

Yep you're right he's been a fantastic player for while now and "all star talent" might have been underselling his previous level.

Just feels like he's taken another step and is now someone that could realistically challenge 100pts this season.

I think the second goal can be forgiven, it was truly a defensive breakdown but a save would’ve been nice

The first and third were were no traffic pretty far out shots. Those two, especially within 4 shots is completely unacceptable

Woll showed it’s possible to save normal shots, and even harder shots too

woll should be given a decent look after tonight
 
Just like getting on Domi after 4 games was ludicrous, so is getting on Samsonov after 4 games. He will be fine.
