From the 1st expansion for the 1967-68 season to the 2019 draft the Rangers had had exactly 1 top 5 draft pick in pretty much 50 years. The Rangers even when they haven't been good have never tanked.

Burke's crankiness here is a little much IMO and he should step back a little. Maybe it's not really an insult thrown in Gorton's direction but his going off wasn't necessary. Rangers would be on the same exact path they are now even if we picked 8 last year and 12 this year and we'd still be in the middle of a pretty remarkable rebuild even without Kakko or Lafreniere.

Agree with all of this. Burke’s comment wasn’t an insult, but it WAS insulting. Not many GMs build a winner without luck of some kind, so for Burke to foreground that part and add the “he’s done a good job” as an afterthought is pretty insulting.

I've heard enough of Brian Burke to know that he's self-aware about his cranky-old-man persona, and he plays it up for humor. He's being totally sincere in his criticism of the lottery but I'm almost certain his delivery is for laughs. Some of the venom directed toward him is a bit over the top, considering he didn't even really criticize Gorton at all.

The Rangers have Laf and Kakko so i don’t give a blank. We’ve seen a small army of elite talent awarded in Edmonton while their front office might be drinking themselves silly.

Enjoy the potential, we all deserve it.

Cheers to us  and the :rangers

Burke always has snarky things to say. Thats just Burke. Its half the reason they love sticking a camera in his face.

what i find hysterical about this - is if you remember last season towards the end, a lot of us wanted to tank and many analysts said we should've been tanking to improve our chances for the best draft pick. Contrary to that, Gorton actually told Quinn and the team to forget about tanking and just focus on WINNING LOL.

In our final game of the 2018-2019 season, we faced Pittsburgh and won in OT. This is somewhat controversial amongst hockey fans because it gave us an extra point when we could've tanked for a better position. Gorton told Quinn explicitly to win. Quinn even said on record that he remembers Gorton shaking his hand after the game and saying "we'll get rewarded for this..." and then he grinned and walked away.

And alas, in 2019-2020 we again played to win as many games as possible. We were clearly trying to make the playoffs down the stretch. A team that is really trying to tank and "exploit the system" doesn't do what Gorton advised his team to do LOL. It's literally the exact opposite.

Perhaps if Gorton had us take the tanking method then what Burke is saying now, would have some merit to it. But it's totally BS for him to say that when Gorton has been doing the exact opposite of trying to "get lucky". Gorton if anything made it harder for his organization from a standard probability sense. This illustrates to me that Burke is just envious. He clearly has an ulterior motive behind those words. He can't handle the fact that Gorton tried to impression values and winning culture upon his organization while somehow getting cosmically rewarded for it. It's too much for Burke to handle LOL. so he gets bitter. Good game Burke. Move along.

I see this more of Burke ranting about the lottery, not the Rangers.

But to his point...Lafreniere hasn't played one game, and Kakko was a non-factor last year. The Rangers have a ton of good young talent that was acquired through skilled trading, drafting, free agency, etc. There are some obvious errors (Lias Andersson), but every good GM has a blemish on their record.

Gorton deserves credit for not trading any of our 1sts before they became lottery picks, to speed up the rebuild, as he easily could have done. He committed to the rebuild at just the right time, and all his good moves are paying off. Luck is great, but it's more than just luck. Edmonton and Buffalo have been tanking for a decade and have gotten nowhere, NYR is already a playoff team.

They have gotten lucky as hell.

And they deserve it. Shit goes horribly for this team all the time. It’s about time we got some breaks.

As far as Burke's comments. It's a whole lotta nothin. Don't take offense to it. I liked TSN's coverage of the draft better than NBCSN's

As far as all the other fanbases of truly whiny dipshits that come and cry about the unfair draft lottery, how it was rigged for the Rangers, studying the balls like it's the Zapruder film, etc. etc. Well this...

So is, he taking Don Cherrys mantel?

Who gives a flying f*** what that guy says. We won the lottery and I am going to enjoy it for the next 8 years until Alex bolts to Montreal in free agency.

So what is Burke puking and moaning about? That the best team that can tank should be rewarded the highest pick? So the NHL is supposed to favor the organization that can best screw its fan base with the most talentless skates and make a mockery of professional sports by putting forth such a product. Screw the teams that produce such a sucky product and make the bottom eight all equal footing in obtaining that 1st rounder.

The draft lottery does suck and should be changed. He's not wrong.

We have had zero luck with the lottery, ever, and then finally get it two years in a row. We're not going to apologize for that.

I don't know, this seems like much ado about nothing. And Burke is a bit of a blowhard but is also a good guy, so, whatever.

The draft lottery is fine the way it is to discourage tanking, but I would exclude teams who have had a top-3 pick in previous years (i.e. lottery win)

1st overall: Exempt for 5 years
2nd overall: Exempt for 3 years
3rd overall: Exempt for 1 year

This would avoid situations where teams have back-to-back top picks like the Rangers, and pre-lottery it would have prevented the Penguins from getting Malkin and Crosby ironically

Blackhawks would not have gotten Kane

so by year 5 of this plan almost 1/3 of the league has no shot at a lottery pick.

Eh, this is pretty much how Burke is at all times, with or without a camera.

He is very knowledgeable. But he’s also a bit of an asshat. Always has been.
