I don’t think he insulted Gorton. He said they did a good job (which is true) and got lucky with the lottery (also true)

I didn’t see any part where he mentions “no draft skill”?

this is nonsense and we have thicker skin than this.

Agree 100%

Whoever put that article together is trying (and suceeding) to get clicks and stir up outrage.

The draft lottery does suck and should be changed. He's not wrong.

We have had zero luck with the lottery, ever, and then finally get it two years in a row. We're not going to apologize for that.

I don't know, this seems like much ado about nothing. And Burke is a bit of a blowhard but is also a good guy, so, whatever.

This. I've seen him interviewed discussing this topic before. The league wanted to stop tanking, which is respectable. But I do think they went too far the other way. I get not giving the worst team the #1 pick...but I agree with him that the bottom 3 or 5 teams should have a higher % at the top spot.

He's been crabby about the lottery since it happened, but when he says its a "bad system and needs to be fixed", i mean its not really the system, it was a one time thing due to COVID, and the odds were so incredibly low (probably rigged tbh), I don't think its something that will happen very often.

Also I do agree somewhat, Gorton has made some great moves that took some real GM skill, but winning back to back lotteries is not something you can attribute to him.

Kinda like it was rigged for small market Edmonton and Pittsburgh? NJ is in the NY area but are more or less a small market team and they won twice in what 3 years? Give me a break dude. You're basing this on nothing.

The above is worth reading again. He didn't bash Gorton. He said he's done a good job and he got some help. Ranger fans becoming snowflakes. LOL!

Meh like others have said already he's not completely wrong. The draft should definitely be tweaked. There is no way in hell a team that made the play in round should have had a shot at this pick. That being said, I'm not going to be losing any sleep over it and I'm not going to apologize for it. Thanks for Lafreniere!

Brian Burke is a terrible person.

He has information from being connected so when he talks about facts it can be interesting. But, his opinions will never move the needle for me.

The other dumb thing about the lottery this year was that they did it before the playoffs started (phase I). That really made the league look bad when a play in team stole the top spot. Would have not been nearly as embarrassing if they held off and did one lottery.

Burke can go f himself. I hate that leagues reward losing. Something had to be done to mitigate the race to the bottom every year and we now have the lottery. It’s not as if the Rangers were winning the lottery every year. We have had some luck the last 2 years. What about the previous 50? He should go back to his garbage can with that grouchy ass shit.

I am 100% sure that Burkie wants you to read more into this and give him more attention.

Burke can F all the way off. I guess some feeds can't exist without having some old grey relic popping off at the mouth.

I had the pleasure of crushing a few drinks with Brian Burke and Pat Quinn at Messier's Induction ceremony at the HHOF. He was a great conversation. Something to be said about a guy that isn't afraid to tell it like he see's it. I don't agree with him on everything he says or does but he is what is.

Burke is wrong and there's nothing wrong with the lottery. It is VERY difficult to be bad enough to finish bottom 3 in the league. Like, absurdly difficult. Since the 1960s expansion, the Rangers have never finished bottom 3 in the league, and we don't exactly have a storied history over the last 55 years. When a team bottoms out THAT badly, one player, no matter how good, isn't going to turn things around. You need to fix the culture, the coaching, the entire roster, and (usually) the owner. You end up with teams that become the sporting equivalent of scratch off lotto players, always convinced that the next ticket will be the million dollar winner. Getting a guaranteed top pick in that scenario encourages teams to ignore their organizational problems.

On top of that, you end up throwing some of your most marketable players into cesspool franchises. How much more money would the league make on a player like Eichel if he weren't on a perpetual bottom feeder? How much better of a career might Nash have had if he weren't developed in a mediocre franchise? It's a waste of assets.

It isn't THAT difficult to make the playoffs if you are doing things right as a franchise. You just have to be in the top half of the league. If you aren't, you should have a crack via the lotto, and I have no problem with a system that rewards teams for doing things the right way rather than automatically rewarding teams that ignore their problems. And that isn't even bringing up the fair competition issues when teams in the playoff hunt get to face teams that are desperately TRYING to lose games late in the year. It makes Hockey almost as bad/scripted as WWE.
