Boyle is good without the puck and frigging terrible with the puck and in the offensive zone. He can barely handle a pass and forget about him driving the puck for more than 5 feet in moderate traffic without losing it. If Boyle is one of the players in a grind cycle, the puck will be lost within seconds.
He's even ineffective in front of the goalie, every time there's a rebound and Boyle is digging for rebounds, you see his number in the camera while the puck trickles out behind him. My advice to him when it comes to anticipation would be to do the exact opposite of what he expects in his gut feeling, turn 180 degrees and get the rebound. I've stopped counting how many times that happened last season, it was hilarious. The conclusion is his offensive awareness is terrible.
Boyle could be a very effective 4th liner where you can't hope for any offensive production, kill penalties and take faceoffs. That's it. You put him out there to kill ice time. Now, if he would also use that big frame of his to actually hit people, maybe fans and Torts wouldn't be so hard on him.
Also, did he forget everything Barb Underhill taught him? His skating seems to be back into "slow" mode.
